What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the skill on supplying words/expressions that complete analogy. The scope
of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module has only one lesson and 1 subtask:

be more adept in word recognition and in categorizing words according to word
analogy relationship types.

1 Word Analogy

English is particularly complex when it comes to analogies in both everyday speech

and as literary devices, but with practice you can become more adept at teasing
apart the meaning of these creative comparison to enrich your understanding and
your expression.

What’s In
Making comparisons between two different things requires a flexible use of
language. Though on the surface a metaphor or complex analogy may not make
much sense, digging a little deeper to understand the relationships between the
things being compared will usually clear things up. Some analogies are steeped in
the culture of a particular place or time, and this adds a layer of interest and a
challenge, especially when you’re learning a new language.

Nowadays it is important to know how to compare things especially when we

acquire or buy essential products or commodities for practicality in terms of price,
functions, benefits, etc. For instance, when you buy food, you have to consider the
taste and the price, especially the nutrients you can get from it. In this way, we are
doing comparison.

Notes to the Teacher

Let the learners determine the things being compared in the given figurative language/figures of sp

8
What’s New
Figures of Speech
Is defined as a form of expression (such as a simile or metaphor) used to convey
meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another
that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener.

Simile - is where two things are directly compared because they share a common
feature. The word AS or LIKE is used to compare the two words.
Eg. As cold AS a dog's nose

Metaphor – it also compares two things, but it does so more directly WITHOUT
using as or like.
Eg. The shop was a little gold-mine.

Fill in the table below by determining the things or ideas being compared in
each given expression.
1. Finding a good man is like finding a needle in a haystack.

2. That movie was a roller coaster ride of emotions.

3. Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you gonna get.

4. “Writing a book of poetry is like dropping a rose petal down the Grand
Canyon and
waiting for the echo.” – Don Marquis

5. “…worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by

chewing bubble
gum.”

1. How did you find the activity? How did you arrive with the correct answers?
2. What have you learned about the given expressions?
3. How do you interpret the meaning of the given expressions?
4. Are there comparisons from the given expressions? Were you able to use
analogy?
5. How is giving comparison important?

What is It
Word Analogy shows a relationship between words. It is comparison in which
idea or a thing is compared to another thing that is quite different from it. It aims
at explaining that idea or thing by comparing it to something that is familiar.
Analogies can help you learn new words you first determine that relationship
between the words.

Example: up:down :: hot:cold

How do we read the given analogy?

The double colon splits the analogy into two parts. The first part is the left-hand
side of the double colon, "up:down," and the second part is the right-hand side,
"hot:cold." What relationship do you see between both sets of words? Obviously,
it is antonyms. The relationship that exists between the words in the first part is
exactly the same as the relationship that exists between the words in the second
part. One possible way to read this analogy is, "Up is the opposite of down, just
as hot is the opposite of cold." There are a number of relationships that can be
shown through analogies.

minute:hour :: ounce:pound

Relationship: part to whole

"An hour is comprised of minutes, just like a pound is comprised of ounces."

fork:eat :: shovel:dig

Relationship: object to function

"You use a fork to eat, just like you use a shovel to dig."

There are possible types of analogies to help you think of types of

relationships you can look for in analogies. Below are some examples of
analogy relationships.

1
1. Antonyms – words having the opposite meaning - big : small
2. Synonyms – words having the same meaning - great : awesome

3. Part : Whole – a part of something is compared to a whole - hand :fingers

4. Object : Use –part to its function - face mask :protection

5. Tool User : Tool – carpenter : hammer / tool: object it’s used with – hammer :
nails
6. Category : Example – dog : Golden Retriever
7. Effect : Cause – flood : rain / Cause: Effect – practice : improve

8. Type to Characteristic – pairs of words that are used to highlight and

compare their relationship – skin : smooth
9. Profession and Object to Study – it has something to do with the field of
work and the field of study – botanist : plants

10. Degree of Intensity – comparison of words based on its intensity of

meaning mall : smallest

What I Have Learned

Analogy basically means ‘‘resemblance of one object to another in certain
aspects.’’ The aim of analogy is to test the learner's ability to discover the
relationship between the question pair and then to find the required pair of words
which is most similar to that relationship.
10 kinds of relationships that analogies may express:

1. Antonyms – words having the opposite meaning - up : down

2. Synonyms – words having the same meaning - great : wonderful

3. Part : whole – trunk : tree / whole : part – school : classroom

4. Object : use –part to its function - crayon : draw

5. tool user : tool – carpenter : hammer / tool: object it’s used with –
hammer : nails

6. category : example – dog : Golden Retriever

7. effect : cause – flood : rain / cause: effect – practice : improve

8. Type to Characteristic – skin:smooth

9. Profession and Object to Study – botanist:plants

10.Degree of Intensity – low:lowest

Here are some important things to remember when you think about analogies:
Parts of Speech
If the words in the first pair express a “noun : adjective,” or “verb : noun,” or
adjective : adjective” relationship (for instance), the second pair should show the
same relationship between parts of speech.

1
Word Order
If the first pair expresses a “tool user: tool” relationship (for instance), the
second pair must express the same relationship in the same order.
Exactness
Sometimes two or more of the given choices would make fairly good sense in the
blank. When this happens, you should choose the most relevant .
