MATH023 Solids of Revolution
Volumes Disc Method, Washer Method
& Shell Method
Objectives Disc Method
At the end of the period, you should be able to:
Compute volumes of solids of revolution using
circular disk method.
Compute volumes of solids of revolution using
washer method.
Compute volumes of solids of revolution using
cylindrical shell method.
Disc Method
Example:
Find the volume of the solid generated by
revolving the area bounded by y = x 1/2, y=0,
and x = 4, about the x-axis.

Example:
The area bounded by y=x2 and y=2x is
revolved about the y-axis. Find the volume of
the solid formed.
Shell Method Shell Method
Example:
Use the shell method to find the volume of
solid generated by revolving the area
bounded by x=y2, x=4, and y=0 about the y-
axis.

Find the volume of solid described in each problem.
1. A solid has a circular base of radius 1. Parallel cross
sections perpendicular to the base are equilateral
triangles.
2. A frustum of a pyramid with square base of side b,
square top of side a, and height h.
3. The base is an elliptical region with boundary curve
9x2 + 4y2 = 36. Cross-sections perpendicular to the x-
axis are isosceles right triangles with hypotenuse in
the base.
