2022 SPS360S Tutorial 1 Questions

The document outlines a tutorial on separation processes that includes 5 questions across two sections. The first section covers overview of separation techniques and asks students to identify the 5 basic techniques and their commonality. It also asks about the difference between ESA and MSA and disadvantages of MSA. The second section covers principles of mass transfers and includes questions about molar flux, diffusion coefficients of binary mixtures, counter diffusion problems, and determining molar average velocity and diffusion flux in a 3-component gas mixture. Students are to submit their answers to questions 3, 4, and 5 by March 11, 2022.

2022 SEPARATION PROCESS: UNIT OPERATIONS (SPS360S)

TUTORIAL 1
Due Date: 11 March 2022
S.Shoko

Overview of Separation Processes

1. What are the five basic separation techniques, and what do they all have in
common?
2. What is the difference between an ESA and an MSA? Give three disadvantages of
using an MSA.
3. The need to remove organic pollutants from wastewater is common to many
industrial processes. Separation methods to be considered are: (1) adsorption, (2)
distillation, (3) liquid– liquid extraction, (4) membrane separation, (5) stripping with
air, and (6) stripping with steam. Considering the fate of organic material, explain
which methods are suitable for separating organic pollutants from wastewater.

Principles of Mass Transfers

1. What is Molar flux in terms of a. convective mass transfer b. diffusion

2. From first principles show that the flux of a gas A diffusing through a stationary and
non-diffusion gas B is given by

d xA
N A =Nx A −C D AB
dz

3. In a binary mixture of A and B. The diffusion coefficients are found to be equal. Using
equations, explain how it is true and the concepts applied to make such a
conclusion? Hint:
D AB=D BA

4. A binary gaseous mixture of components A & B at a pressure of 1 bar & temperature

of 300 K undergoes steady-state equimolar counter diffusion along a 1-mm thick
diffusion path. At one end of the path the mole fraction of component A is 70%, while
at the other end it is 20%. Under these conditions D AB = 0.1cm2 /s. Calculate the
molar flux of component A.

x A 1− x A 2
N A =C D AB

5.
One kmole of gas mixture at a total pressure of 250 kPa and 303 K contains 10% CH 4,
30% C2H6, and 60% H2 by volume. The absolute velocities of each species are -10
m/s, -5 m/s, and 15 m/s, respectively, all in the direction of the z-axis
(a) Determine the molar average velocity, v m for the mixture
(b) Evaluate JCH4 (Hint: Look for an equation of velocities based on diffusion flux)

N N A+ NB
