Life as an Extra
Many people dream of working in movies or on television. Some people do this, but they are not famous and
are usually only on the screen for a few seconds. These people are the “extras,” the actors you see behind the
main actors. They might be part of a crowd or someone working in an office scene. So what is it like to be an
extra, and is it a good way to get into movies? We spoke to Jon Jefferson, who has spent 30 years working as an
extra.
‘When I started, I thought it would be a good way to earn some extra money, but the pay was not as good as I
thought and I had to pay for my transportation to reach the place where they were filming. Another problem is
that the work is not very regular. You never know when a movie studio will call you.
‘A typical day involves a very early start and a lot of waiting. You should bring a good book, as you can’t listen to
music on the movie set. In fact, you can’t make any noise at all! The weather can be a problem – you may find
yourself standing in the cold for hours or wearing a large costume on a hot day.
‘Of course there are good things too – you learn all about how a movie is made, which is the reason I still do it.
You also get free food on the movie set. But the most exciting moment is afterward when you see yourself on
the big screen. But don’t be an extra if you want to become a professional actor. The director won’t suddenly
see your face and choose you for their next movie!’
