Bill Nye the Science Guy – Erosion KEY

Three things I already knew that were confirmed in the video:

A- ________________________________________________________________

B- ________________________________________________________________

C- ________________________________________________________________

Three things I didn’t know, but I now do because I watched the video:

A- ________________________________________________________________

1. Water, ice, wind, SAND and chemicals are constantly crumbling

mountains, flattening hills, widening VALLEYS
and deepening canyons.

2. Erosion takes TIME.

3. When liquid water turns to solid ice, it (choose one) expands /

shrinks.

4. When liquid water gets between the cracks of rocks and freezes,
the rocks SPLIT OPEN. This is another cause of erosion.

5. When wind blows SAND against a mountain, the mountain erodes

and the peaks become more rounded.

6. Water can wear away rock to form a CANYON.

7. If soft rock is underneath harder rock, the softer rock erodes away
first, leaving an ARCH.

8. MUSHROOM rocks are formed from wind erosion.

9. Erosion is the SLOW wearing away of the Earth’s surface.

10. True or False: Waves of the ocean are strong enough to pound
against the shore and contribute to the erosion of rock.

11. How are sandy beaches made? THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF OCEAN

WAVES POUNDING AND WEARING AWAY ROCKS. THE ROCKS BREAK
DOWN TO FORM SAND.

12. TREE roots can help prevent erosion by keeping the material
underneath it in place; however, it can speed up erosion by
splitting rocks.

13. Erosion is a NEVER ENDING process.

14. What happened to the ball of clay that was put in the freezer? IT
GOT CRACKS FROM EXPANDING FROZEN WATER, JUST LIKE ROCKS.

15. Which of the following is NOT a cause of erosion?

a. water
b. sun
c. wind
d. ice
16. How are mushroom rocks formed?

a. Ocean waves hit the bottom of rocks causing only the bottom
of the rock to wear away.
b. Wind picks up sand that hits the bottom of rocks causing only
the bottom of the rock to wear away.
c. Wind and water erosion.

17. What is erosion?

a. Dropping sediment that was been carried by wind or water

from one location to another.
b. Tiny pieces of rock.
c. The process through which rocks and soils are worn away by
wind, water, and ice.
