French originated from Latin which was introduced to Gaul (modern day France) during the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC. Over time, the local Celtic languages were replaced with Latin. The early written works in French emerged in the 9th century. In the 16th century, King Francis I declared French as the sole official language of France. Today, French is spoken on all continents and is an official language of 32 countries, making it the third most widely spoken language globally and the primary language of many international organizations.

FRENCH LANGUAGE

French language is also called as Romance language

HISTORY

It dates back to the year 51 and 58 BC,


with the invasion of the Gauls by the
Roman army in France, led by Julius
Caesar, and it is then that Latin or popular
Latin spread throughout the territory. Thus
displacing the Celtic language that was
spoken in Gaul.

It can be said that the French language continues its


transformation, and that is how King Francis I decrees French
as the official language. The same would be mandatory in all
written texts and in the oral language of all France as to what
is the origin of French.

Some time later, the first written works of a literary type


appeared, by clerics and educated people, the first text in
French is the Oaths of Strasbourg from the 9th century, where
the first testimony of a Romance language spoken in France,
already clearly different from Latin, is found. .

THE CURRENT FRENCH

Currently the French language is the only


one that, along with English, is spoken on
all five continents. Having as official
language 32 countries.

French is the third most used language


worldwide, since this language is the
official language of international
institutions. As for example: the
international red cross, the European
Union and UNESCO.
