Chapter 1
INTRODDUCTION
BACKGROUND
This is the world of information technology. Everybody wants to do every work at one finger
click. Gone are the days where customers have to go to market only to buy products. The internet
facility is used for online shopping. Now customers can buy anything, anywhere and at any point
of time without any hassles. In India, 243,198,922 people are using internet till 2014 and
globally Asian countries have 48.4% of internet users among the world and now the access to
the help of browser or mobile application. It is also known as e-tail, word generated from
electronic retail. Online shopping attracts large numbers of customers not only because of high
levels of convenience, but because of wide selections, competitive pricing, and bigger access to
anything online from online websites or from online stores (Monuwe et al 2004). The modern
world gives this virtual world a new definition- Net generation, which is made up of individuals
both between 1977 and 1997. The first generation grew up surrounded by digital media and the
internet. For those born before 1970‟s, the online market a new innovation for them so they are
less familiar with online shopping. Pre net generations have a relatively lower capability to
utilize the excess of information available on the net( Kin D & Ammeter, A,2008).
Global lockdown, social distancing, and other measures introduced to limit the spread of the
COVID-19 pandemic have urged consumers to purchase more on the online marketplaces [2].
The business landscape faced rapid transformations during the quarantine period as a result.
Ultimately, the corona crisis accelerated the development of digital commerce. Globally, a new
digitally immersed consumer has emerged, a more selective one, with financial difficulties.
Income losses, limited transport opportunities, and pandemic mitigation measures, which caused
the reduction of supplier activities, have forced B2B manufacturers and sellers to reduce
production and marketing costs, find new suppliers both abroad and within the country, and
accelerate decision making. National companies received opportunities to diversify their product
portfolio for the purposes of import substitution and to supply other firms and branches of
foreign companies with necessary resources [3,4]. B2C markets, on the other hand, encountered
a decline in purchasing power and cross-border mobility. On top of that, consumers shifted
toward health and safety while maintaining a preference for inexpensive goods and services [5].
Products that bring comfort and a sense of cosiness to a living space received more attention than
they normally would. Overall, the uncertainty and unpredictability of the situation made
consumers postpone some of their demands [6]. The industrial market and consumer market both
faced a need to accelerate digitalization and make it easy to find and purchase items online [7,8].
The pandemic sparked a meteoric rise in online sales. As visits to physical stores were restricted,
and many were running low on money, consumers went online to shop, causing online purchases
to grow higher and higher [9]. Consumers were generally mindful shoppers even before the
pandemic [10]. Because of this, some shopping categories such as experiences were gradually
downgraded on their priority lists, and COVID-19 accelerated things in this direction [11]. The
COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lifestyles and motivations of many people, such that their
Students have different attainments performance, the act of purchasing a product or service from
an e-store using a website or app is known as online shopping. According to Tarhini et al.
(2021), online buying is gaining popularity due to the opportunity to save time and effort.
Furthermore, in terms of perception versus actual experience, online purchasing differs from
direct e-store and indirect e-store.Switching traditional commerce or trading to digital in order
to survive was one issue that drew attention on a global scale. Walmart reported a 74
percent rise in online sales in April 2020, despite low customer walk-ins at stores (Nassauer,
2020; Redman, 2020). When consumers buy from an indirect e-store rather than a direct e-
store in developing countries, there is a mismatch between their impression and their real
experience. On the contrary, the COVID-19 epidemic has wreaked havoc on numerous
industries around the world, including business. According to De Vos (2020), a global
shutdown was established to prevent the virus from spreading.

study seeks to assess these changes. In achieving this goal, the study will determine the impact of
the pandemic among students who chose online business as their source if income during these
trying times. Furthermore, this study aims to identify the effects of online business into student’s
life; as a seller and a consumer.

A.RESEARCH DESIGN
Phenomenological Studies
In this study, the research design is Phenomenological Studies. According to Donalek (2004),
phenomenological studies examine human experiences through descriptions provided by the
people involved and these experiences must be lived experiences. Therefore, this design is the
most suitable design for this study because respondents will be asked to describe their
experiences towards the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in their life which make them chose
an online business as their source of income.
B. RESEARCH INTRUMENTS

questionnaires. The questions consist only three (3) items. The first question is asking about

business to the students as a seller. And lastly, the effect of online business to yhr students as a

gathering information: 1) participating in the setting, 2) observing directly, 3) interviewing in
depth, and 4) analyzing documents and material culture.
