Mendiola Reflection

Farmers in the Philippines have historically protested for land reform but faced violence from police. The Mendiola Massacre of 1987 was a notable example, where police killed 12 and injured 51 farmer protesters. While the farmers were only seeking to voice their struggles to the president, the actions of police that day have scarred the nation's history. Leaders must prioritize serving the people and addressing their needs to prevent such tragic events from occurring again.

We are living in a world full of wonders, a world that is so rich in many resources from the

forest, to the skies and down to the deep waters and we are the steward of this wonders. In our country
we have a rich sources of natural resources especially on our land, where we get the agricultural
products that the farmers produce and we consume it but farmers sometimes are despise by the
government, that's why they don't receive enough benefits that leads to protest to the government.

In the incident happened in January 22, 1987, shock the whole country where at least 12 got
killed and injuring 51 protester this incident is called the Mendiola Massacre. This incident was because
of lack of government action on land reform.

In my time reflecting on the picture given to us, there are three realization that I've seen,
observe and research about that picture. First of all, Fighting for your right, may cause your life, the
farmers don't expect that by just attending that protest will result to a bloody incident. They are just
making noise, for the president to hear their agony as farmers and to make an action on that problem.

There are a lot of Pilipino people, who experience this, but still they are not stopping because
they need it and they know that the government can help them, even though they don’t if it will be
peaceful protest of not that will cause some people there life, just like the Mendiola massacre.

Second is, Duty is responsibility, but the action you make is your accountability, in this incident
the police who are in the front line to avoid any violence and to maintain peace on that rally but instead
of peace and unity it turns into misery. According to some sources, that the protester did not prove the
police, that’s why they did not expect that tragedy. Indeed, being a police is a noble duty, but every
action and decision you make is your accountability, for it will be scar that throughout the year will
haunt you because of that scar.

And lastly, being a leader is not about the position it’s about the people hoping for you. Leading
a nation is not an easy task, and providing what’s best for its people is what he/she thinks always. That
incident happen in the administration of Cory Aquino is one of the events in history that will always be
remembered because of its tragic memories.

Indeed this Mendiola massacre is a remarkable event in the Philippine history that leaves a
bloody lesson to us everyone today in the current generation. A lot people wounded and died because
of this kind of tragedy, but we keep on moving forward, many uniform personnel is doing their duty, but
sometimes lack in discipline in what they are doing, many presidents have handled our nation that gave
their life to serve the country. Maybe this event may seem a painful tragedy but let this be a lesson and
to every people in the government and the citizen of our country that the hope of our nation will be
achieve with the unity of every people.
