Tutorial 4 - FluctatingLoad
Tutorial 4 - FluctatingLoad
1. A Plate, 10mm thick, subjected to a tensile load of 20 kN is shown in Figure 1. The plate is made
of cast iron (Sut=350 N/mm^2) and the factor of safety is 2.5. Determine the fillet radius.
3. A rectangular bar is shown in Figure 2. It is loaded in bending. Determine the fatigue stress-
concentration factor for the given dimensions. D=2, d=1.8 and r=0.25. (Hint: Kt =A(r/d)b, where
A=1.0147 and b=-0.2179, q=1/(1+√𝑎/√𝑟), Kunn-Hardrath formula in terms of Neuber’s constant,
a and the notch radius, r), √𝑎 = 0.062
4. Create an estimated S-N diagram for a steel bar and define it equations. How many cycles of life
can be expected if the alternating stress is 100 MPa? The ultimate tensile strength is 600MPa.
The bar is 150mm square and has a hot-rolled finish. The operating temperature is 500 C
maximum. The loading will be fully reversed bending. A reliability factor of 99.9 % will be used.
5. A machine component is subjected to a flexural stress which fluctuates between + 300 MN/m2
and – 150 MN/m2. Determine the value of minimum ultimate strength according to 1. Gerber
relation; 2. Modified Goodman relation; and 3. Soderberg relation. Take yield strength = 0.55
Ultimate strength; Endurance strength = 0.5 Ultimate strength; and factor of safety = 2.
6. A Cantilever beam made of cold drawn steel 40C8 (Sut=600 N/mm^2 and Syt=380N/mm^2) is
shown in Figure 3. The force P acting at the free end varies from -50 N to +150 N. The expected
reliability is 90% and the factor of safety is 2. The notch sensitivity factor at the fillet is 0.9.
Determine the diameter of d of the beam at the fillet cross-section using modified Goodman
relation and Gerber equation.
7. An alloy steel strut is used for an experimental aircraft application. Fatigue test data for strut
under operating conditions is given in Table 1. The cross-section area of strut is 0.1 in^2. In service,
the strut is to be subjected to the following spectrum of completely reversed axial load during
each duty cycle: Pa=11000 lb for 1000 cycles Pb=8300 lb for 4000 cycles Pc=7500 lb for 20000
cycles. This duty cycle is to be repeated three times during the life of the strut. Assuming fatigue
to be the governing failure mode, would this strut be expected to survive all three duty cycles, or
would it fail prematurely?
