Tutorial 3 - LoadStressAnalysis
Tutorial 3 - LoadStressAnalysis
1. The frame of hydraulic press consisting of two identical steel plates is shown in Fig 1. The
maximum force P acting on the frame is 20kN. The plates are made of plane carbon steel (45C8)
with tensile yield strength of 380 MPa. The factor of safety is 2.5. Determine the plate thickness.
2. A bracket, made of steel FeE 200 (Syt=200MPa) and subjected to a force of 5kN acting at an angle
of 30o to the vertical as shown in Fig 2. The factor of safety is 4. Determine the dimensions if the
cross-section of the bracket.
3. Fig 3 shows a crank loaded by a Force F=1.3 kN that causes twisting and bending of a 20mm
diameter shaft fixed to a support at the origin of the reference system. In actuality, the support
may be an inertia that we wish to rotate, but for the purposes of stress analysis we can consider
this a static problem.
a) Draw separate free-body diagrams of the shaft AB and BC, and compute the values of all
forces, moments and torques that act.
b) Compute the maxima of the torsional stress and the bending stress in the arm BC and indicate
where these act.
c) Locate a stress element on the top surface of the shaft at A, and calculate all the stress
component that act upon this element.
d) Determine the maximum normal and shear stress at A.
4. Fig 4 shows pin –and-clevis joint. The applied pin load is P=45kN and also C=25mm, D=E=12mm,
and the pin diameter is d. The maximum allowable tensile stress for the pin is 240MPa, and the
maximum allowable shearing stress for the pin material is 140 MPa.
a) Draw free body diagram of clevis pin
b) Construct shear and bending moment diagrams for the pin loaded.
c) Find the location and magnitude of the maximum bending stress in the pin, and estimate the
required minimum pin diameter based on bending stress.
5. A C-clamp as shown in Fig. 5, carries a load P = 25 kN. The cross-section of the clamp at X-X is
rectangular having width equal to twice thickness. Assuming that the clamp is made of steel
casting with an allowable stress of 100 MPa, find its dimensions. Also determine the stresses at
sections Y-Y and Z-Z.
6. A 50 mm diameter shaft is made of AISI 1020 cold-drawn steel. The shaft is subjected to a bending
moment of 5650 N-m. Determine the maximum torque that can be applied to the shaft according
to a) the maximum stress theory and b) the distortion energy theory. (Hint: AISI 1020 CD Syt=352
MPa)
7. The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 10 kN together with a transverse shear force of 5 kN.
Find the diameter of bolt required according to 1. Maximum principal stress theory; 2. Maximum
shear stress theory; 3. Maximum principal strain theory; 4. Maximum strain energy theory; and 5.
Maximum distortion energy theory.
