Auschwitz is the biggest concentration camp ever established by the Nazis.

Auschwitz

was separated into three camps: Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II (Auschwitz-Birkenau), and

Auschwitz III (Auschwitz-Monowitz). Auschwitz had many prisoners, and many died. This

specific camp took place in 1940-1945. In 1944, there were 2,864 male children in the main

camp. Thousands of people died in crucial pain.

Auschwitz I was the main camp which was used to house German prisoners and Polish

political prisoners. Auschwitz, like many other camps, had a gas chamber and crematorium. The

camp would eventually need a larger gas chamber that was built outside the compound; this was

a place where medical experiments were done on infants, twins, and dwarfs. “Dr. Josef Mengele

(aka “The Angel of Death”) was deeply fascinated by twins. He would have them separated from

the other prisoners when they arrived at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Every day, the twins

had to have their blood drawn. The true purpose of this routine is unknown.” (Bundit #)

There were many children in the main camp. There were concentration camps for

specifically women and children; women weren’t allowed in male camps. It is estimated that

throughout all of the holocoust there were 1.5 million children deaths. Children over the age of

12 had a better chance at life because they could be used for forced labor. Many children died

from disease and starvation, but most of all the main death was mass executions from the gas

chambers. In these chambers, “10-18 minutes” is how long it took for somebody to die.

There were a couple other ways that people would die: infants were thrown into fiery

ditches either dead or alive, phenol injections straight through the heart, infants were used as

targets by being thrown into the air. People over the age of fifty and pregnant women were sent

immediately to the gas chambers. The prison guards would act churlish to the prisoners and
would be disrespectful. The prisoners thought that just about everything was grueling and

terrible. Many countries came together and quelled against the Nazi-Germans in attacks.
