Wiring Foreword
Please refer to the loom wiring diagrams and official Mercury Manual for the loom wiring details. Most
general wiring details are explained in this manual.

Wiring Reliability
The wiring is critical for for reliable operation of the ECU. The following points will help to ensure that the
wiring is reliable:
1. Ground Wiring. One of the most common wiring problems is poor ground wiring. The ground wire must be
grounded properly to the chassis and there must be no paint or anodizing between the ground wire and
mounting point. Temporary wiring is likely to cause problems, use the proper terminal that is securely
crimped to the ground wires. These comments apply to both the ECU ground wire and the ignition system
ground wires.

2. Power wiring. The power wire must be wired by the shortest possible path to the battery via a 30 amp
relay. The relay must be in good condition and the wires must be crimped securely to the appropriate
terminals. The relay should be activated by the ignition switch. The ECU power must not be fed directly from
the ignition switch because it probably wont be able to handle the required current.

3. Spark plug leads. The spark plug leads can cause interference with the ECU wiring. Keep the ECU wires
away from the ignition leads wherever possible. If it is necessary to cross the ignition leads, cross it at right
angles.

4. Terminal crimping. Use the correct crimping tool for each type of terminal. Do a pull test on a sample wire
and terminal to verify that the crimp is sound. In theory the wire should break before the wire pulls out the
crimp. Most crimp tools are only designed for a certain range of wire sizes so be sure to test the crimp with
the particular wire size being used. Soldering the terminal is the last resort if the correct crimping tool is not
available.

5. Terminal Damage. The various connector terminals are easily damaged if probes are inserted into them.
Do not insert probes of any kind into the terminals. If checking a circuit for continuity gently touch the side of
the terminal only.

6. Wire splicing. Preferably use a crimp splice. If soldering a wire splice, wire movement near the wire splice
should be avoided otherwise a fracture might occur at the stress point created by the solder. Use heat shrink
to insulate and provide support to the wires. Never simply connect wire splices without solder or a crimp
splice. These type of joins will corrode. Never use 'Vampire Taps' & 'Plastic Butt Splices'. The first is an
absolute NO. Vampire taps only work under ideal conditions and wire thickness.

7. Wire strain. Avoid pulling wires tight at the connectors.

8. Wire movement. Avoid wire fatigue by tying the wires down close to the connectors.

9. Heat. Keep the wires away from high heat sources.

Important note: ANY ECU is only as good as the INSTALLER AND TUNER!! Take your time and do it
right the first time.

ECU Mounting Location
It is recommended that the Spitronics ECU, EFI Fuse Box and Relays be installed inside the vehicle cabin.
Do not install the ECU or wiring loom directly or close to any high heat sources.

The ECU Ground wire needs to be earthed properly onto the vehicle’s chassis. A bad earth connection may
cause intermittent problems and damage to the ECU and/or other components.

External Jumper Settings

The Mercury 2 ECU is equipped with external jumpers, these jumpers are used to activate the internal pull
up resistors which are needed when a Hall effect crank angle / Cam angle sensor is used. For the Lexus
1uz-fe VVTi engine both these jumpers need to be removed.

Engine Control Unit (ECU) Power Supply
The Spitronics ECU requires a stable power and earth supply.

Run a (Red 1.5mm²) wire from the ECU relay pin 30 directly to the battery positive through a inline 10A
Fuse. Now connect the two Red ECU Power Input wires to pin 87. Pin 86 must be earthed and pin 85
supplied with a switched 12v power supply.

Make sure that the switched 12v + supply does fall away under engine cranking conditions.

The ECU Earth wire, ECU Relay Earth and Black Earth wires from the ECU connectors need to be properly
grounded onto the vehicle’s chassis. A bad earth connection may cause intermittent problems and damage
to the ECU and/or other components.

Fuel Injectors

Location
The fuel injectors are located on the intake manifold underneath the fuel rails on both banks of the engine.

Operation
The amount of fuel injected depends on how long the injector is open and what fuel pressure is supplied.

Resistance & Current

Different injectors have different resistance from 0.5 ohms to 16 ohms. This means that they require different
operating currents and wiring circuits to open them.

Fuel Injector Pinout

The fuel injector does not have a specific polarity, but always try to keep the polarity constant throughout the
injector loom in order to aid fault finding.

Acoustic Control Induction System Valve
This circuit opens and closes the Intake Air Control Valve (IACV) in response to the engine load in order to
increase the intake efficiency (ACIS: Acoustic Control Induction System). When the engine speed is 4,700
rpm or more and the throttle valve opening angle is 60° or more, the VSV is OFF, so the is IACV open. All
the other times, the ECM turns the VSV ON and closes the IACV.

The intake air control valve is located underneath the top half of the intake manifold and is connected to a
short pigtail loom.

Rev Counter types

There is different kinds of rev counters available. Only analogue non stepper motor rev counters can be
driven from the Spitronics ECU. Most soft pulse rev counters can be driven straight from the ecu, but in
some cases the rev counter requires a pull up resistor or spike circuit to work.

Pull up resistor conversion

Some electronic rev counters require a pull up resistor to work correctly. Please see sketch below.

Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor Input
The manifold absolute pressure sensor provides instantaneous manifold pressure information to the engine's
electronic control unit (ECU). The data is used to calculate air density and determine the engine's air mass
flow rate, which in turn determines the required fuel metering for optimum combustion and influence the
advance or retard of ignition timing.

Operation
How it works is 5 volts DC is supplied to the sensor from the ECU. Inside the MAP sensor there is a resistor
that moves in relation to intake manifold pressure. The resistor varies the voltage between about 1V to 4.5V
depending on the pressure.

Sensor Location
The manifold pressure sensor can be mounted inside the engine bay. The manifold take off point should be
at a position that best represents the average manifold pressure with minimum pulsations. A filter can be
fitted inline to reduce manifold pressure pulsations. Don't T-off idle fittings etc, the take off pipe must be
direct to the manifold. When mounting the MAP sensor face the port down and mount above the take off
point so that any moisture can drain out; ensure that the hose runs downhill all the way to the manifold if
possible.

Lambda Sensor Input
The Lambda sensor is used by the ecu to display Air / Fuel ratios and optimize the fuel economy after the
vehicle has been tuned.

Operation
When initially tuning an engine it is important to have a Lambda sensor or meter to measure the air/fuel ratio
of the engine. This information the mixture can be adjusted for maximum power and optimal fuel economy.

Testing a Lambda sensor for the correct Pin-outs

Test the resistance with an Ohm Meter between two pins at a time. The heater element normally has the
same colours and has a resistance of 6 to 12 ohm. Connect the element wires to earth and 12 volt as above.
The element does not have a specific polarity. The sensor output can only be measured while the engine is
running. Connect the two remaining wires to the ecu signal input and earth as illustrated above. The sensor
will only give an output when the engine has achieved some temperature. If the sensor is not working, swop
the signal and earth wires and test again. The sensor will not be damaged if the earth and signal output has
been swopped.

Life expectancy
The life expectancy of a lambda sensor varies due to fuel type and application. On leaded fuel it is around 50
hours and pump unleaded fuel around 500 hours. Very rich mixtures will shorten sensor life.

Contaminants
Lambda sensors can be damaged by gasket sealants and anti-seize and some fuel additives

Position
The ideal position for mounting the lambda sensor is at least half a meter from the engine and after the
exhaust collector or turbo down pipe. The lambda should be orientated, thinking of a clock between the ten
o'clock to the two o'clock position.
