Relative clause
Relative pronoun: who/ whom/ which/ that/ whose/ where/ when/ why
Notice:
+ proper nouns, possessive states, demonstrative adjectives (this, that, these, those) non-defining
+ Quantifiers: half of/ all of/ none/ many/ both/ neither/ number + of
+ Vế chính trong câu non-defining thường xảy ra gần hơn trên trục thời gian
Example:
My friend John went to the same school as me. He has just written a best-selling novel.
hành động “has just written” xảy ra gần đây, “went” đã xảy ra trước đó “has just written” là HD
chính, “went” là phụ.
My friend John, who went to the same school as me, has just written a best-selling novel.
Example:
The computer which I bought last month doesnt work properly. không có dấu phẩy
Example:
MJ made a video in 2022. It was called AB. It was considered a classic by his fans.
In 2022 MJ made a video which was called AB and consdiered a classic by his fans.
+ The relative adverbs can be changed into the prepositions + the relative pronouns
Example:
I was on my way to the AB Cinema, __where/at which___ I wanted to meet my cousin Fred.
I was on my way to the AB Cinema. I wanted to meet my cousin Fred at that Cinema/ there
First he tided his wardrobe. He found a rabbit’s paw there/ in his wardrobe.
Cricket is popular in many countries around the world. It is played between two teams of eleven.
Cricket, which is played between two teams of eleven, is popular in many countries.
+ In defining clauses we can omit the relative pronoun in the position of object.
Example:
The boy who/whom/ that you don’t like much wants to talk to you
