DSP Lab 4

This document describes a lab experiment on the Nyquist sampling theorem. The objectives are to implement the theorem in MATLAB. The theory section explains that the sampling frequency must be at least twice the maximum frequency of the signal to avoid aliasing. The exercises generate signals at different sampling rates and plot the signals. Task 1 generates and plots a signal at sampling rates below, equal to, and six times the Nyquist rate. Task 2 generates and plots another signal in the same way. The conclusion states that the lab taught about the sampling theorem and its MATLAB implementation.

LAB NO. 4
Sampling Theorem
Lab Objectives:
To implement the Nyquist sampling theorem in MATLAB

Equipment:
 Personal computer
 MATLAB software

Theory
Sampling Theorem
The Nyquist sampling theorem provides a prescription for the nominal sampling interval
required to avoid aliasing. It may be stated as follows.
“ The sampling frequency should be at least twice the maximum frequency of the signal”
OR
“A periodic signal must be sampled at more than twice the highest frequency component of
the
signal”
Mathematically:
Fs ≥ 2Fmax
Where Fs is the sampling frequency and Fmax is the highest or maximum frequency of the
signal

Exercises
 Plot the Following Signal with Fs is equal to fmax , fs less than fmax, two times of
Fmax and Eight times of Fmax
 Code

Task 1
Generate the following signals and plot the signal by taking the samples below the Nyquist
rate, exactly equal to Nyquist rate and six times of Nyquist rate.
X(t) = 5cos15 πt + 10sin25 πt
 Code

Task 2 : Generate the following signals and plot the signal by taking the samples below the
Nyquist rate and six times of Nyquist rate.
Y(t) = 25sin20 πt + 50sin16 πt + 30cos28 πt
