CorelDRAW Tutorial
In this tutorial we will show you how to setup a page in Corel Draw.
First let’s choose Layout/Page Setup to open the Page Layout Window
Now choose the Size from the Options list and set width and height values manually.
You can also choose the unit of measure for the page size from the fly-out bedside the Width setting.
You can also set the page orientation as landscape (wider than tall) or portrait (taller than wide).
Then save your settings.
You can also set the page size and orientation on the Property Bar above the workspace:
As you may see above, you can also set the Units (millimeters, centimeters, etc.).

CREATING TEXT
In this tutorial we will show you how to create and edit your text in Corel Draw. Tutorial Includes
project files.
Now, lets work with "Paragraph text" which creates a mini word processor in your document.
Paragraph Text provides automatic wrapping to new lines, unlimited text capacity, columns and the
ability to link text areas together.
2
As soon as you do so, the Format Text window will appear.
This offers one click access to many text features (for efficient editing and stylizing).
OUTLINE TOOL
In this tutorial we will show you how to use the outline tool in Corel Draw. Tutorial Includes project
files.

SMART DRAWING
In this tutorial we will show you how to use the Smart Drawing Tool in Corel Draw X3.
Now start drawing any shape you like, do not worry about how bad it looks as this is a "magic" Tool:
Now lets apply this tool to another shape you want to draw:
5
Now with all the shapes you made you are free to make any design you want.
For example, a formal letter:
6
TEXT ON THE ROAD
In this tutorial we will show you how to place text on a street in Corel Draw X3.
7
Then, add the Interactive Transparency tool to the text:
8
As this is an image in motion, we need to add the same motion to our text.
So let’s add some Gaussian Blur:
9
COLOR HARMONIES AND COLOR BLENDS
Sometimes it is hard when working with colors to know which colors go together and which do not.
CorelDraw has a facility for finding color blends and harmonies that will help us to create great looking
images that are easy on the eye.
Color harmonies are created by shapes places over a color wheel. Each point of a shape has a color
under it. For example, a triangle will have 3 colors associated with it and a rectangle will have four. The
colors at each corner of the shape are complimentary, contrasting, or harmonious depending on the
shape you choose.
Color blends are colors that are combined colors of your choosing. You choose the base color and the
blender gives you grids of colors to choose from that are combinations of your choices of 4 base colors.
You can get to the Mixers pallet from the Fill flyout. Choose the Uniform Fill dialog.
When the dialog opens choose the Mixers tab. Below is a screenshot of the Mixers tab.
10
You can also choose from several different color models.
Drag the black dot around the color wheel and watch the results in the color swatch area.
You have a totally different approach to color now. You can see how one color blends into another.
11
Use the four drop downs around the color swatch to change colors.
Choosing colors that go together can sometimes we a daunting task but with the tools in CorelDraw
you can quickly and easily create a nice palette to work from.
Go to Bitmaps>Trace Bitmap.
12
The Corel Trace program will open with your bitmap in a left pane and a black image in the right pane.
For this tutorial go to Trace>By Advanced Outline. You can see there are many other options here for
you to choos
choose from.
When it's done, you can save the trace or simply close Corel Trace. Your vector image will replace the
bitmap in CorelDraw automatically.
13
Now, to apply transformations or other effects to your vector you might want to ungroup everything
by going to Arrange>Ungroup All.
Once you do that you will see nodes representing all the objects in you new vector image that can be
manipulated.
CREATING AN AD FLYER
CorelDraw allows you to combine text and images in a way that makes it easy to create attractive
advertising without having to have both a image program and a layout program. This is made possible
and easier by being able to add normal text and paragraph text to your canvas.
We'll go over the basics using a fictitious company called Billy's House of Birds.
The first thing needed is an image of a tropical bird which you can find on the CorelDraw clipart CD.
Go to File>Import and browse your hard drive to find an image you want to use. Place it on your
canvas.
Choose the Text tool to add the title or company name to the top of the canvas.
To create Paragraph text, choose the Text Tool and click and hold where you want the text to start.
14
Add text to your paragraph triangle. The cursor should be there as soon as you finish dragging.
We've added another tropical bird to the right side for interest.
15
Use the text tool to add other text either normal or paragraph text and that's all there is too it.
16
Each object on the page can be sized and moved making layout a breeze.
17
MAKING TABLES
1 Being originally designed for DRAWING, not page layout, Corel built no table features
into their CorelDRAW graphics software. You will find an extensive tool in both
Ventura and WordPerfect, but for those including tables in their graphics there are
only two options: manual creation or import from another application.
If you have the table open in a word processor or spreadsheet, simply copy and paste
it into DRAW. DRAW has great object embedding features and will paste your object
as a fully scalable object with a transparent background. You can even Paste Special...
(from the edit menu) and select "meta file" to allow the table to be ungrouped and
edited from within DRAW (note though, it will just be basic shapes, and so you will
have to re-paste it if you want to change the number of columns or rows etc.).
However, for smaller tables, manual creation from within DRAW is not as tedious as
you might think. There is a graph paper tool for instantly creating the table squares,
and great alignment tools for getting text within each cell.
Switch to the Graph Paper Tool
Having worked out how many rows and columns there will be in your table, select the
graph paper tool. It is normally in a flyout next to the polygon tool.
18
Setting rounded corners is a nice effect used in some tables.
This effect is easy to reproduce in CorelDRAW.
4 Apply Formatting to some or all cells
Although some formatting options will require you to create more objects. Shading
and outline effects can be applied to the current cells easily. To apply formatting to
the entire table, simply select the entire group. Alternatively you can apply formatting
selectively by Ctrl-clicking on each individual cell. In this example I will set the header
row to a dark blue fill and highlight a selected cell because its data is of extra
importance in this project.
Ctrl-click the first header cell and click on the navy palette color.
Repeat this for all header cells.
Ctrl-click to apply any extra formatting to cells of interest.
CREATING TEXTURES
Creating textures in CorelDraw is easy and you can save them in your Patterns folder
for later loading and use within CorelDraw.
1 I first created a rectangle. It doesn't need to be filled like mine below. I did that so you
could see what was going on. The size of the rectangle is going to help determine the
size
ze of the pattern.
20
Draw another rectangle within the area shown below. You can just draw the patterns
3 in if you want. I use the rectangles to keep things reigned in to certain areas without
having to undo and redo a lot.
4 Choose the leaf spray and you should have something similar to below.
5 Size the rectangle with the leaf spray so it's inside the grass area.
Now we need a background color other than white. I chose my color and drew a
6 rectangle. You'll need to move that to the bottom of the pile of objects and you can
do that by going to Objects>Arrange>To Back.
21
7 You should now have something that looks similar to below.
Go to Tools>Create>Pattern. Drag the marquee around the area you want to create a
texture of. You'll save it and can then load it into the Pattern Fill dialog for later use.
Since it's a full color bitmap, you want to be sure that when you try to use it, you
8
choose full color from the Pattern Fill dialog.
You'll see a preview of the texture you have chosen and you can set options as you
like as shown below.
9 I chose the following shape and then use the Pattern Fill dialog to fill it.
22
10 Add some text and it's done.
After that draw 2 ellipses of different sizes (one big and the other one small).
You can fill them with any color you like:
After doing so, select the Spiral Tool from the Toolbar:
23
Now draw a spiral and put the 2 ellipses as shown below:
Then select the Interactive Blend Tool. (Remember our goal is to blend these 2 ellipses we
just draw).
Now that you have the Interactive Blend Tool selected, you must select the big ellipse and
release the mouse to the small ellipse, look:
After doing so, click this new path over the spiral...this is what will happen:
24
Yes, we just blend both objects.
You can do it with any other shape you like.
Remember to erase the spiral as soon as you finish doing your path.
By doing this, you can make any drawing you like, look:
Its Fun!!
25
Now, lets move an Object Forward:
Select the square with the Pick Tool
Move the text to overlap both the square and the circle.
The text is still on top of the square since we only moved it ahead by one position
Lets use The Front Properties:
Choose the square again and choose Arrange/Order/To Front One (or just TO FRONT)
Now the text is behind the square but in front of the circle
26
Lets use the Behind Properties:
Select the square with the Pick Tool.
We will move it back, choose Arrange/Order/Behind
The cursor changes to a large arrow. Click on the object you wish the selected object to be positioned
behind, in this case, the circle.
The square is now behind the circle.
27
CONVERT TEXT INTO CURVES
In this tutorial we will show you how to convert text into curves in Corel Draw X3.
Start a new document.
Then select the Text Tool from the Tools Menu.
Then, select the text you just wrote and right click over it.
After that select: Convert to Curves
After doing so we are able to select and edit the letter we need to change, for example the "S" and the
"G".
As soon as we start editing, remember that you can remove or add nodes.
28
The convert to Curves option its superb when you need to design a logo, because you can give each
letter your own touch.
Then, draw a circle with white fill and a thin outline and select it.
We are going to copy the fill from the square into the white circle.
29
Click Edit, Copy Properties From in the Main Menu
A screen will appear and ask which properties you wish to copy.
Click Fill and then click OK
Click on the square and the circle will fill with the same color as the square.
You can also copy both the fill and the outline, doing the same steps (you just have to click in Outline
Color).
Its easy!!
Have fun!!!!
30
Zoom in to work on the image.
Now, lets select the Eraser Tool at the tools bar.
Now click and drag the tool over the text in short moves so that it breaks up the letters:
31
Then, choose the Extrude Lighting icon and click on one light.
For example Light number 1:

Now, Click on the small white square at the right, to the left the Color Blend preview window to
activate and choose a color from the preset palette.
Double click on the border to the left the Color Blend preview to set the position for a third color.
A triangle will appear to indicate a point has been added.
You can set this point by entering a number in the Position dialog box as well.
Then select the color position triangle and choose a color as before.
You can add multiple colors by repeating this final step.
36
CREATING RADIAL FOUNTAIN FILLS
In this tutorial we will show you how to create radial fills in Corel Draw. Tutorial Includes project files.
Choose Two Color in the Color Blend section of the Fountain Fill window.

upper right corner of the window previews your colors as you choose them.
37
You can also Click on the preview sample to change the position of the center of the fill, or set Center
Offset numerically in the Center Offset section of the window.
A negative number moves the horizontal center to the left and the vertical center down.
A positive value moves the horizontal center to the right and the vertical center up. You can view
changes in the preview window.
As an example I chose: Horizontal:10 and Vertical: -20
If you want you can also set a percentage value in the Edge Pad dialog box found in the Options
section of the window.
This setting will provide a pad of solid color at the edges of the object.

CREATING PERSPECTIVE
In this tutorial we'll learn how to create a simple perspective object. Perspective adds an illusion of
distance and depth to your 2d objects.
Choose and create a shape.
Go to Effects>Add Perspective.
Your object should now have a mesh over it with four drag handles, one at each corner of the mesh.
You can move the drag handles in any direction to start adding perspective to your object.
61
Continue to drag the handles around to see what you can come up with.
When you start moving drag handles you'll also notice an 'X' outside the perspective mesh. You can use
this to move the vantage point where you want it.
You can hold down the CTRL key to constrain a drag handles to a vertical or horizontal axis. Also, you
can hold down the CTRL + SHIFT to move opposing nodes an equal distance in opposite directions.
62
Again, by dragging the 'X' you can change the vantage point.
Have fun!
