9
COLOR HARMONIES AND COLOR BLENDS
Sometimes it is hard when working with colors to know which colors go together and which do not.
CorelDraw has a facility for finding color blends and harmonies that will help us to create great looking
images that are easy on the eye.

Color harmonies are created by shapes places over a color wheel. Each point of a shape has a color
under it. For example, a triangle will have 3 colors associated with it and a rectangle will have four. The
colors at each corner of the shape are complimentary, contrasting, or harmonious depending on the
shape you choose.

Color blends are colors that are combined colors of your choosing. You choose the base color and the
blender gives you grids of colors to choose from that are combinations of your choices of 4 base colors.
You can get to the Mixers pallet from the Fill flyout. Choose the Uniform Fill dialog.

When the dialog opens choose the Mixers tab. Below is a screenshot of the Mixers tab.

For color harmonies click on the Options button>Mixers>Color Harmonies.

Pick a shape from the Hues drop down.

Pick an option from the Variation drop down.

10
You can also choose from several different color models.

Drag the black dot around the color wheel and watch the results in the color swatch area.

Change the Variations to see how the colors change.

Go back to the Options drop down>Mixers>Color Blend.

You have a totally different approach to color now. You can see how one color blends into another.

11
Use the four drop downs around the color swatch to change colors.

Choosing colors that go together can sometimes we a daunting task but with the tools in CorelDraw
you can quickly and easily create a nice palette to work from.

CONVERT BITMAP IMAGE TO VECTOR IMAGE

There are times when you are using a bitmap image in CorelDraw that you want to apply some
transformations to it. Unfortunately some transformations cannot be applied to bitmaps. Fortunately
for us, CorelDraw has a utility that makes it possible for us to apply transformations to a converted
bitmap and we do that by using CorelTrace.
Load a bitmap onto your canvas.

Go to Bitmaps>Trace Bitmap.
12
The Corel Trace program will open with your bitmap in a left pane and a black image in the right pane.

For this tutorial go to Trace>By Advanced Outline. You can see there are many other options here for
you to choos
choose from.

Corel Trace will now convert your bitmap to a vector image.

When it's done, you can save the trace or simply close Corel Trace. Your vector image will replace the
bitmap in CorelDraw automatically.

13
Now, to apply transformations or other effects to your vector you might want to ungroup everything
by going to Arrange>Ungroup All.

Once you do that you will see nodes representing all the objects in you new vector image that can be
manipulated.

CREATING AN AD FLYER
CorelDraw allows you to combine text and images in a way that makes it easy to create attractive
advertising without having to have both a image program and a layout program. This is made possible
and easier by being able to add normal text and paragraph text to your canvas.

We'll go over the basics using a fictitious company called Billy's House of Birds.

The first thing needed is an image of a tropical bird which you can find on the CorelDraw clipart CD.

Go to File>Import and browse your hard drive to find an image you want to use. Place it on your
canvas.

Choose the Text tool to add the title or company name to the top of the canvas.

To create Paragraph text, choose the Text Tool and click and hold where you want the text to start.

Drag a rectangle the size you want.

14
Add text to your paragraph triangle. The cursor should be there as soon as you finish dragging.

We've added another tropical bird to the right side for interest.

15
Use the text tool to add other text either normal or paragraph text and that's all there is too it.

16
Each object on the page can be sized and moved making layout a breeze.

17
MAKING TABLES
1 Being originally designed for DRAWING, not page layout, Corel built no table features
into their CorelDRAW graphics software. You will find an extensive tool in both
Ventura and WordPerfect, but for those including tables in their graphics there are
only two options: manual creation or import from another application.
If you have the table open in a word processor or spreadsheet, simply copy and paste
it into DRAW. DRAW has great object embedding features and will paste your object
as a fully scalable object with a transparent background. You can even Paste Special...
(from the edit menu) and select "meta file" to allow the table to be ungrouped and
edited from within DRAW (note though, it will just be basic shapes, and so you will
have to re-paste it if you want to change the number of columns or rows etc.).
However, for smaller tables, manual creation from within DRAW is not as tedious as
you might think. There is a graph paper tool for instantly creating the table squares,
and great alignment tools for getting text within each cell.
Switch to the Graph Paper Tool
Having worked out how many rows and columns there will be in your table, select the
graph paper tool. It is normally in a flyout next to the polygon tool.

Create the table structure using the Graph Paper Tool.

2 Specify the number of rows and columns.

Before you click and drag with the Graph Paper Tool, you will need to enter the
number of rows and columns into the Graph Paper Tool's property bar. Unfortunately
this can NOT be edited once you have created the "Graph Paper" and so it's worth
getting it right at the beginning.

Enter the number of columns and rows for the table

into the edit boxes on the property bar.

3 Create the table the size you want it

You can now click and drag to draw the table. CorelDRAW will create a grid of boxes
with the dimensions you specified. You can ungroup these and edit them as you
would any other rectangle control objects. Let's round the top row's corners for a
more sophisticated effect.
Hold down Ctrl and click on the rectangle in the top left hand corner to select it from
within the group. On the property bar, chance the roundness of its top left corner to
100. Repeat this process to make the top right corner of the top right rectangle round
also.

18
Setting rounded corners is a nice effect used in some tables.
This effect is easy to reproduce in CorelDRAW.
4 Apply Formatting to some or all cells
Although some formatting options will require you to create more objects. Shading
and outline effects can be applied to the current cells easily. To apply formatting to
the entire table, simply select the entire group. Alternatively you can apply formatting
selectively by Ctrl-clicking on each individual cell. In this example I will set the header
row to a dark blue fill and highlight a selected cell because its data is of extra
importance in this project.
Ctrl-click the first header cell and click on the navy palette color.
Repeat this for all header cells.
Ctrl-click to apply any extra formatting to cells of interest.

Ctrl+Click to individually select each cell to

apply any special formatting
5 Make the table text objects
This is perhaps the most tedious part of creating a table in CorelDRAW. Each cell
needs it's own text object. It is easiest to create them in rows then individually.
Using the artistic text tool, create a text object for the first cell.
Apply any formatting.
Re-select the table and press Ctrl+U to ungroup the table into individual rectangles.
Select the text object, then shift-select the first table cell. Draw aligns all selected
objects to the last-selected one.
Press "c" to align the text vertically to it's cell, "e" to align the text horizontally.
Repeat for the rest of the first row.
We will now duplicate this data for the rest of the table.
Select all the text objects in the first row.
While holding down Ctrl to maintain alignment, press and release the right-mouse
19
button (to duplicate as you drag) then drag the row of text to position it as the data
for the second row.
Press Ctrl+R to repeat for all remaining rows.
Now all you need to do is apply any formatting to to the text objects and enter your
data.
In next to no time you will have a great looking table made with DRAW. But feel free
to email Corel to include table features in v.11 :)

The final sample table that I made in minutes

CREATING TEXTURES
Creating textures in CorelDraw is easy and you can save them in your Patterns folder
for later loading and use within CorelDraw.
1 I first created a rectangle. It doesn't need to be filled like mine below. I did that so you
could see what was going on. The size of the rectangle is going to help determine the
size
ze of the pattern.

2 I used the spray brush and chose the grass spray.

20
Draw another rectangle within the area shown below. You can just draw the patterns
3 in if you want. I use the rectangles to keep things reigned in to certain areas without
having to undo and redo a lot.

4 Choose the leaf spray and you should have something similar to below.

5 Size the rectangle with the leaf spray so it's inside the grass area.

Now we need a background color other than white. I chose my color and drew a
6 rectangle. You'll need to move that to the bottom of the pile of objects and you can
do that by going to Objects>Arrange>To Back.

21
7 You should now have something that looks similar to below.

Go to Tools>Create>Pattern. Drag the marquee around the area you want to create a
texture of. You'll save it and can then load it into the Pattern Fill dialog for later use.
Since it's a full color bitmap, you want to be sure that when you try to use it, you
8
choose full color from the Pattern Fill dialog.
You'll see a preview of the texture you have chosen and you can set options as you
like as shown below.

9 I chose the following shape and then use the Pattern Fill dialog to fill it.

22
10 Add some text and it's done.

You can fill them with any color you like:

After doing so, select the Spiral Tool from the Toolbar:
23
Now draw a spiral and put the 2 ellipses as shown below:

Then select the Interactive Blend Tool. (Remember our goal is to blend these 2 ellipses we
just draw).

Now that you have the Interactive Blend Tool selected, you must select the big ellipse and
release the mouse to the small ellipse, look:

We are almost done.

Now select the: "Path Properties" from the Main Menu and select: New Path.

After doing so, click this new path over the spiral...this is what will happen:

CREATING PERSPECTIVE
In this tutorial we'll learn how to create a simple perspective object. Perspective adds an illusion of
distance and depth to your 2d objects.
Choose and create a shape.

Go to Effects>Add Perspective.

Your object should now have a mesh over it with four drag handles, one at each corner of the mesh.

You can move the drag handles in any direction to start adding perspective to your object.

61
Continue to drag the handles around to see what you can come up with.

When you start moving drag handles you'll also notice an 'X' outside the perspective mesh. You can use
this to move the vantage point where you want it.

You can hold down the CTRL key to constrain a drag handles to a vertical or horizontal axis. Also, you
can hold down the CTRL + SHIFT to move opposing nodes an equal distance in opposite directions.

62
Again, by dragging the 'X' you can change the vantage point.

Have fun!
