I Reading
Read the text about holistic medicine, and then answer the questions. 15 Points
In the 1960s, many people involved in medicine were unhappy with the increasing use of
expensive technology, in particular with the use of drugs, in the diagnosis and treatment of
disease. These people developed what is known as the holistic approach to medicine, which is
based on the idea that the whole person must be treated when he or she is ill, not just the part of
their body that has the disease.
Holistic medicine is not a single school of medicine, but a broad movement, and it is
difficult to give a precise definition. It does, however, have three basic principles. First of all, it
recognizes that psychological, environmental, and social factors play a significant part in the
development of disease. Secondly, it actively involves the patient in the treatment process:
typically, for example, the patient will be interviewed in detail by the doctor before treatment
begins. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of prevention of illness, and therefore tries to
encourage lifestyles that reduce the chances of disease, for example, healthy diet, relaxation, and
exercise.
