What I Need to Know

bet you didn’t! I know the adults around you looked after you. You look at the younger
children around you, newborns are immunized, while others are scheduled for check
ups and other health practices. Who are with them? The adults, right?

As an adolescent, your personal health now becomes your responsibility. Every

day you make health decisions, so it is very important that you know correct health
information. Therefore, it is your responsibility to use health information wisely to guide
your day- to-day activities.

After reading this module, you should be able to:

a. discuss the concepts of holistic health and explain its dimensions

What Is It

A. Holistic Health

The definition of holistic is relating to the idea that things should be studied as a
whole. On the other hand, health is defined by World Health Organization (WHO), as a
state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity.

Dimensions of Health

Nowadays, health focuses on wellness. It is a positive approach that includes all

the dimensions of health: physical, mental, emotional, social and moral-spiritual. Being
healthy means having a balance of the dimensions of health. This results in attaining
holistic health.

1. Physical Health. It means how well your body functions. It means you can carry out
everyday tasks without becoming too tired. It also means you have enough energy to
enjoy activities and to meet emergencies.

4
2. Mental or Intellectual Health. A mentally healthy person is open to new ideas and
experiences that can improve personal, family, and community life.

3. Emotional Health. It refers to how well you meet the demands of daily life and how
you adjust to new situations. It also means expressing your happiness, love, joy and
hope as well as your sadness, anger, and fear in healthful productive ways.

4. Social Health. It refers to how well you get along with other people, how you react to
social situations and how you interact with various social institutions.

5. Moral-Spiritual Health. It means being at peace and in harmony with yourself, with
others and with the Creator. What you feel, think and say what you believe in or value
are shown in how you act. It refers to your personal beliefs, values, and faith.

e. Getting regular medical and dental checkup and treatment
f. Eating a well-balanced diet and participating in active game

are some ways to attain good mental health:
a. Set realistic goals.
b. Look at every chance with an open mind.
c. Know the demands and expectations from you.
d. Maintain a positive outlook when dealing with problems/conflicts.

you:
