HW1 1

The document provides information to determine the required number of 1/2-inch diameter stress-relieved seven-wire strands for a 34 ft simply supported prestressed I-beam with a 36 in depth subjected to a live load of 3,600 plf. The beam has an eccentricity of 13.12 in at midspan. Calculations show that 9 strands are needed, providing an area of 1.377 in^2, to resist the total moment of 6,908,256 in-lbs while satisfying stress limits.

Problem 1.

An AASHTO prestressed simply supported I-beam has a span of 34 ft

(10.4 m) and 36 in. (91.4 cm) deep. It is subjected to a live-load
intensity WL = 3600 plf (52.6 kN/m)/ Determine the requred 1/2-in.-dai
stress-relieved seven-wire strands to resist the applied gravity load
and the self-weight of the beam, assuming that the tendon
eccentricity at midsplan is ec = 13.12 in. (333 mm).
