Lesson
Deployment Procedures and
1 Network Testing

I nstalling printer is simple enough

if you have one print queue on
your home computer. But in a
managed network with loads of
users, heaps of printers, and a mix
of operating systems in far-flung
locations, things can get tricky!
As a network administrator, it’s
important to have the best tools to
get the right print queue to the right
person in the right location, every
single time. These printer
deployment options will make life
easy for both System Admins and
end-users alike.1
Printer Deployment in Printer Logic is the process of installing and updating a print
queue and driver that is installed on one or more workstations. However, before
printers can be deployed to workstations, you must upload the driver to a
workstation through the Admin Console. Driver deployment without Printer
Logic could be an arduous process of manually updating drivers through GPO, and
worse, piecemeal if you have direct IP printers.
You will be able to learn pre-deployment procedures in this module and how to
install and deploy a printer using computer server and a client, testing configured
system and network, and using technical report on test conducted.

B. Dynamic Host Connection Protocol (DHCP)

1. What is DHCP?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that

automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and
other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default
gateway.

2. Why use DHCP?

Every device on a TCP/IP-based network must have a unique unicast IP address

to access the network and its resources. Without DHCP, IP addresses for new
computers or computers that are moved from one subnet to another must be
configured manually; IP addresses for computers that are removed from the
network must be manually reclaimed.

With DHCP, this entire process is automated and managed centrally. The
DHCP server maintains a pool of IP addresses and leases an address to any
DHCP-enabled client when it starts up on the network. Because the IP
addresses are dynamic (leased) rather than static (permanently assigned),
addresses no longer in use are automatically returned to the pool for
reallocation.2

The network administrator establishes DHCP servers that maintain TCP/IP

configuration information and provide address configuration to DHCP-enabled
clients in the form of a lease offer. The DHCP server stores the configuration
information in a database that includes:

2.1 Valid TCP/IP configuration parameters for all clients on the network.

a. Valid IP addresses, maintained in a pool for assignment to clients, as

well as excluded addresses.
b. Reserved IP addresses associated with particular DHCP clients. This
allows consistent assignment of a single IP address to a single DHCP
client.
c. The lease duration, or the length of time for which the IP address can
be used before a lease renewal is required.

3. DHCP IP Reservation

C. Guidelines for Testing Configured Computer System and Network

1. Testing Your Computer Network

You’ve set up all your network switches, plugged in all the cables, and
configured all your computers. One task remains before you can
declare your network is finished: You must verify that the network
works as expected.
Here are few simple tests you can conduct to make sure your network
is functional:

A. Check the physical connections.

Check that the link light ---- the little red or green light next to
the RJ45 port is lit on every computer. You must check this light
both on the computer itself and on the switch or router the
computer is plugged into. If this light is not on, you have a
connection problem ----- most likely a bad cable.

B. Verify that you can log in.

When you’re sure the physical connections are good, you should
attempt to log in to each of your network computers using a valid
domain user account.

C. Check the network configuration.

Click the Start button, type cmd and press Enter. Then, enter
the command ipconfig /all and press Enter.

This command will spit out numerous lines of information. The

line you’re looking for should resemble this:

IPv4 address ……………….: 192.168.1.125 (preferred)

If this part of the output does not show a valid IP address, you
need to check that your IP configuration is set correctly and that
your DHCP server is working.

D. Verify that the computers can ping each other.

Another basic test you should perform is to use the ping
command from a command prompt to make sure that the
computers on your network can contact one another.

Do several ping tests. First, make sure that TCIP/IP is up and

running by having the computer try to ping itself. Open a
command prompt and try ping local host. The output from this
command will indicate whether or not the ping was successful.

Next, try to ping your servers by name. For example, if your file
server is named FileServer01, use the command ping
FileServer01.
D. Writing a Technical Report on Test Conducted

Technical Report is any document that records the procedure adopted and
results obtained from a scientific or technical activity or investigation. Use the
following format for a technical report for your recently conducted test.

TECHNICAL REPORT ON TEST CONDUCTED

Name of Technician: _____________________________________________________________
