ANTI-DIFFERENTIATION AND INDEFINITE INTEGRALS

1. Explain in your own words what does anti-differentiation means.

The process of anti-differentiation is the inverse process of differentiation. To

indicate an anti-differentiation of a function f, it is usually represented by the
capital letter F. It contains a theorem that if F(x) is an anti-derivative of f(x), then
F(x) + C are all anti-derivative of f(x), wherein, C is any constant.

2. Give an example of anti-differentiation.

2𝑥 5 − √𝑥
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 4 sin 𝑥 +
𝑥
2𝑥 5 √𝑥 1
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 4 sin 𝑥 + − = 4 sin 𝑥 + 2𝑥 4 −
𝑥 𝑥 √𝑥
1
𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 4 sin 𝑥 + 2𝑥 4 − 𝑥 −2
1
𝑥5 𝑥2
𝐹 (𝑥 ) = 4(− cos 𝑥 ) + 2 − +𝐶
5 1
2
2 5
𝐹 (𝑥 ) = 4(− cos 𝑥 ) + 𝑥 − 2√𝑥 + 𝐶

3. Explain in your own words what does indefinite integral means.

Referring to my explanation of anti-differentiation, if F(x)+C is any anti-

derivative of f(x), the most generic anti-derivative of f(x) is termed an indefinite
integral and is written as ∫f(x)dx=F(x)+c, where c is also any constant. With that
definition, it entails that the ∫ is referred to as the integral symbol, the integrand is
referred to as f(x), the integration variable is referred to as x, and the integration
constant is referred to as “c”.

4. Give an example of indefinite integrals.
∫(10𝑥 4 − 2 sec2 𝑥 )𝑑𝑥

∫(10𝑥 4 − 2 sec2 𝑥 )𝑑𝑥 = 10 ∫ 𝑥 4 𝑑𝑥 − 2 ∫ sec2 𝑥 𝑑𝑥

𝑥5
∫(10𝑥 4 − 2 sec2 𝑥 )𝑑𝑥 = 10 − 2 tan 𝑥 + 𝑐
5
∫(10𝑥 4 − 2 sec2 𝑥 )𝑑𝑥 = 2𝑥 5 − 2 tan 𝑥 + 𝑐
