1. Draw the Lewis dot structure and predict the shape of the following molecules using [1x4]
VSEPR theory:
(a) IF5 (b) SiF5- (c) PF3 (d) O3
2. Explain the following observation with proper reason: [3x2]
(a) White phosphorous is more reactive than red phosphorous.
(b) PCl3 fumes in presence of moisture.
(c) NF3, bp = -129 º and is devoid of Lewis basicity, while, NH3 boils at -33º C and is a
Lewis Base.
3. Write balanced reaction and predict A, B and C. [4]
O2 H 2O C a C l2

P4

4. What happens when: [1x4]

(a) BF3 is reacted with excess NaF in acidic medium
(b) Al2O3 is treated with sodium hydroxide solution
(c) Lithium hydride is reacted with anhydrous aluminium chloride
(d) A copper penny is treated with nitric acid

5. Draw the structures of P4O6 and P4O10 and write the oxidation state of phosphorus in the [2]
two oxides.

6. Reaction of LiH with PCl3 forms a compound X. This compound (X) is also formed by [2+2]
the reaction of Ca3P2 with water. Predict X and write balanced equation for both the
reactions.
7. Elements of Group 16 generally show lower value of first ionization enthalpy compared to the [2]
corresponding periods of group 15. Why?
8. HF has lower acid strength than HI. Why? [2]

9. Removing an electron from N2 forms an ion with a weaker, longer bond than in N2, [2]
whereas the ion formed from O2 has a stronger, shorter bond as shown below. Explain
these facts using MO diagrams
