MATH225 Midterm Preparation Set1

The document is a study guide for a MATH-225 midterm exam covering systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, vector spaces, and linear transformations. It contains 5 questions testing various concepts: 1) Solving a system of linear equations with a parameter and determining values of the parameter that yield no solution, a unique solution, or infinitely many solutions. 2) Properties of matrices including submatrices, elementary matrices, and consistency of linear systems. 3) Computing determinants after a series of row operations. 4) Showing a subset of polynomials is a subspace and finding its basis and dimension. 5) Properties of a matrix including its rank, null space, and whether its

MATH-225 Midterm Exam Preparation — Set 1

Question 1. Consider the system of linear equations

x + (α + 2)y + 2z = 5

x+y+z =1

x + 7y + (α + 1)z = 9

where α ∈ R is a parameter.
(a) (10 points) Find the value(s) of the parameter α for which the above system
has

(i) no solution;
(ii) a unique solution;
(iii) infinitely many solutions.

(b) (10 points) Determine the solutions for the cases (ii) and (iii).

Question 2. Answer the following questions, providing arguments for each answer.
(a) (5 points) If A is a 7 × 7 nonsingular matrix does there exist a 4 × 4 submatrix
of A that is nonsingular?
(b) (5 points) Find all 3 × 3 matrices N such that N 3 = 0 and I3 + N is singular.
(c) (5 points) How many 2 × 2 matrices A have the property A3 = I2 ?
(d) (5 points) Let A be an n × n matrix such that for any b ∈ Rn the system Ax = b
is consistent. Is A singular or nonsingular?

Question 3. Let A be a 3 × 3 matrix and assume that B is obtained from A

2R1 + R3 , and SWAP(R1 , R3 ). It is given that det(B) = 6. Answer the following
questions. In each case, explain your answer.

(c) (5 points) Evaluate det(2A−1 B −2 ).
(d) (5 points) Evaluate det(A2 B −1 A−2 B).

Question 4. Let P3 = {ax3 + bx2 + cx + d | a, b, c ∈ R} be the vector space of all

polynomials with real coefficients and of degree less or equal to 3.

(b) (10 points) Find a basis for W. What is the dimension of W?
(c) (2 points) Is the basis you found in part (b) also a basis for P3 ? Explain your
answer.
