Math6 Q3 Module4 Week4

This document provides a lesson on representing quantities using algebraic expressions and equations. It includes examples of classifying expressions and equations, understanding mathematical operations and symbols, and solving word problems by writing the corresponding equations. Students are given practice problems to write expressions for situations and solve equations. The goal is for students to create their own 10-question cross-number puzzle with one unknown variable for others to solve.

Problem 1:
A piano tutor charges P850.00 per hour. She spends P150.00 for her transportation
fare in going to the house of her tutee and in returning home and another P100.00 for her
snacks. If she taught for 2 hours, what is her total earnings?
Think of the following questions in answering the problem.
1. Which quantities are constant or known?
P850.00 tutorial rate of the piano tutor per hour.
The tutor taught for 2 hours.
P150.00 cost of transportation fare.
P100.00 cost of snacks.
2. Which quantities are variable or unknown? Total earnings of the piano tutor.
Let n = total earnings of the piano tutor
3. What is the relationship between the constants and variables? Translate the sentences
to algebraic expression.

x2
earnings?
(850 x 2) – (150 + 100) = n Solution:
(850 x 2) – (150 + 100) = n
1700 – (150 + 100) = n
1700 – 250 = n
1450 = n
Answer: The total earnings of the piano tutor is P1 450.00.
Problem 2:
There are two kinds of birds in a zoo: eagles and hawks. The eagles are divided into
2 groups and each group contains 10 eagles. The hawks are divided into 5 more than the
groups of the eagles, each group contains 5 hawks.
- Write an algebraic equation to find the total number of eagles and hawks in the zoo. -
What is the total number of eagles and hawks in the zoo?

Think of the following questions in answering the problem.

a. Which quantities are constant or known?
There are 2 groups of birds. Eagle and Hawk
The eagles are divided into 2 groups and each group contains 10 eagles.
2 x 10 = total number of eagles
The hawks are divided into 5 more than the groups of the eagles, each group contains
5 hawks.
(2 + 5) x 5 = total number of hawks
b. Which quantities are variable or unknown? Total number of eagles
and hawks in the zoo.
Let n = the total number of eagles and hawks in the zoo.
c. What is the relationship between the constants and variables?
Translate the sentences to algebraic expression.
(2 x 10) + [(2 + 5) x 5] = n Solution:
(2 x 10) + [(2 + 5) x 5] = n
20 + [(2 + 5) x 5] = n
20 + [ 7 x 5] = n
20 + 35 =n
55 = n
Answer: There are 20 eagles in the zoo. There are 35 hawks in the zoo. The total number of
eagles and hawks in the zoo is 55.
Problem 3:
Four times the age of Ritha decreased by 3 is 25. How old is Ritha?
Let us solve the problem:
a. Given: Four times the age of Ritha decreased by 3 is 25.
b. Asked: Ritha’s age
c. Solution:
Let n = Ritha’s age
4n – 3 = 25
4n + (-3) = 25
4n + (-3) + 3 = 25 + 3
4n + 0 = 28
4n = 28
4 4
n =7
d. Answer: Ritha is 7 years old.
e. Check: (4 x 7) – 3 = 25
28 – 3 = 25
25 = 25

• Numbers represent the quantities which are constant.
