2. Using the results of Problem (1), show that if a body undergoes a displacement 𝑣𝑣 = 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶,
then there will be no strains resulting from this displacement. Since there are no strains,
this displacement must describe a rigid-body motion. What is this motion?
Evaluate the displacements in terms of three arbitrary constants of integration, in the form
of:
𝑢𝑢𝑥𝑥 = ⋯ ⋯ − 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 + 𝑑𝑑; 𝑢𝑢𝑦𝑦 = ⋯ ⋯ + 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 + 𝑒𝑒
(a) Find out the strain tensor and its value at the point (0,0,0).
(b) Using the above strain tensor, find out the change in the length of a line segment
connecting (0,0,0) to (1,2,3). (Answer: 2.94 units)
(c) Also find out the rotation of this line segment. What is the rigid body component of this
rotation?
(d) By neglecting the 𝑧𝑧 -dimension, check whether the resulting 2-D displacement field is
a valid displacement field or not.
5. In a state of plane strain in the 𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 plane, the strain components associated with the 𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 axes
are: 𝜖𝜖𝑥𝑥 = 800 × 10−6 , 𝜖𝜖𝑦𝑦 = 100 × 10−6 , and 𝛾𝛾𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = −800 × 10−6 . Find the magnitudes
of the principal strains and the orientations of the principal strain directions. (Answer: 𝜖𝜖1 =
980 × 10−6 , …)
6. Given: 𝜖𝜖𝑥𝑥 = −0.0003, 𝜖𝜖𝑦𝑦 = 0.0002, and 𝛾𝛾𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = 0.0001, find the principal strains,
maximum shearing strain, and the strains associated with the 𝑥𝑥 ′ − 𝑦𝑦′ axes which are rotated
300 clockwise from the 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 axes. Also show the corresponding deformed shapes of an
element which originally was a parallelopiped with its faces parallel to the 𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 axes.
(Answer: 𝜖𝜖1 = 2.0495 × 10−4 , …, 𝜖𝜖𝑥𝑥′ = −2.1830 × 10−4 , …)
7. The following strain measurements are obtained on a flat plate using a strain rosette as
shown: 𝜖𝜖𝑎𝑎 = 60 × 10−6 , 𝜖𝜖𝑏𝑏 = 135 × 10−6 , 𝜖𝜖𝑐𝑐 = 264 × 10−6 . Find the principal strains
and the respective planes on which they are acting. (Answer: 𝜖𝜖1 = 272 × 10−6 , ….)
8. A bakelite plate with an elliptical hole is in a state of plane stress. Suppose the stress 𝜎𝜎𝑦𝑦 at
𝐴𝐴 at the edge of the ellipse is 21 MPa. Find the strain values at 𝐴𝐴 with reference to the 𝑥𝑥 −
𝑦𝑦 axes. Take 𝐸𝐸 = 35 GPa and 𝜈𝜈 = 0.2. (Answer: 𝜖𝜖𝑥𝑥 = −1.2 × 10−4 , ….)
9. Uniform normal stresses, 𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥 = 90 MPa and 𝜎𝜎𝑦𝑦 = 20 MPa, act on a thin steel plate (𝐸𝐸 =
200 GPa and 𝜈𝜈 = 0.3). Calculate the maximum in-plane shear strain in the plate. (Answer:
4.55 × 10−4 )
10. An elastic material (with material constants 𝐸𝐸, 𝜈𝜈, 𝛼𝛼) is placed in a die. The die is rigid and
insensitive to any change in temperature. The interface between the elastic material and the
die is frictionless. The elastic material is subjected to an uniform pressure 𝑝𝑝 and a rise in
temperature Δ𝑇𝑇. What is the state of stress in the elastic material?
(Answer: 𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥 = −𝜈𝜈𝜈𝜈 − 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸Δ𝑇𝑇)
11. A bolt-sleeve-washer combination is tightened with a torque wrench to produce an axial
strain of 0.0003 in the bolt. The assembly is then heated causing an increase in temperature
of 950 C. What will be the compressive stress in the washer at the new temperature? The
bolt is made of steel and has cross-sectional area 𝐴𝐴𝑏𝑏 = 310 mm2. The sleeve is made of
aluminium and has cross-sectional area 625 mm2, and length 𝐿𝐿 = 150 mm. The washer is
made of steel and has cross-sectional area 𝐴𝐴𝑤𝑤 = 625 mm2, and thickness ℎ = 1.5 mm.
(Answer: 46.96 MPa)
12. A long thin-walled cylindrical tank with hemispherical ends just fits in a rigid cylindrical
cavity when there is no internal pressure in the tank. Estimate the tangential stress (𝜎𝜎𝜃𝜃 ) in
the wall of the cylindrical portion of the tank when the internal pressure in the tank is 𝑝𝑝.
Assume that the thickness of the wall of the tank is 𝑡𝑡 and that the material of which the tank
is made follows Hooke’s law. (Answer: 𝜈𝜈𝜈𝜈𝜈𝜈/2𝑡𝑡)
13. A circle 300 mm in diameter is drawn (it is not a hole) on a mild steel plate before the plate
is stressed as shown (𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥 = 70 MPa, 𝜎𝜎𝑦𝑦 = 15 MPa, 𝜏𝜏𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = 20 MPa). After stressing, the
circle deforms to an ellipse. Calculate the lengths of the major and minor axes of the ellipse
and also find their directions. Take 𝐸𝐸 = 200 GPa and 𝜈𝜈 = 0.3. (Answer: Length of major
axis = 300.11 mm, …)
