MTE - Question Paper

This document is the midterm exam for an engineering analysis and design course. It contains 3 questions. Question 1 asks for the 5 steps of reverse engineering an automatic wrist watch in one line each. Question 2 gives stress components and asks to determine remaining components, invariants, and principal stresses. It also asks to prove stress invariants. Question 3 provides dimensional data for 3 manufacturing lots and asks to determine mean, standard deviation for each; maximum rejections and number; probability of dimension <70mm for combined lot; and linear regression of combined lot data.

Engineering Analysis and Design (MIN-291)

Mid Term Examination (September 21, 2021)

Time: 60 Minutes Maximum Marks: 40

Q1. Write the steps required to design an Automatic Wrist Watch using the concept of reverse
engineering? ONLY FIVE POINTS WITH ONE LINE EACH (Automatic watch charges itself
from the motion of hand). [5M]

Q2. The known stress components at a point in a body, relative to the (x, y, z) axes are 𝜎𝑥𝑥 = 20MPa,
𝜎𝑦𝑦 = 10MPa, 𝜎𝑥𝑦 = 30MPa, 𝜎𝑥𝑧 = −10MPa, 𝜎𝑦𝑧 = 80MPa and, the second stress invariant
is 𝐼2 = −7800(MPa)2 .
(a) Determine the stress component 𝜎𝑧𝑧 , remaining two stress invariants I1 and I3, and three
principal stresses. [10M]
(b) Prove that I1, I2 and I3 are invariants for the above stress problem. [5M]

Q3. The required dimensions of a machine component are 70.0 ± 0.60 mm, as specified by the designer.
This component is manufactured into three lots, i.e. A, B and C. The observations about the
component dimensions for the lots A, B and C are tabulated as,

Lot A Lot B Lot C

Using the above data, determine,

(a) The mean and standard deviation for the lots A, B and C, respectively. [6M]
(b) Assuming Normal Distribution, determine the lot having maximum number of rejections, and
the number of rejected components in this lot. [4M]
(c) If all the three lots are combined together to form a single lot that follows Normal Distribution.
Determine the probability of getting a component with dimension less than 70.00 mm during a
random sampling from the combined lot. [5M]
(d) Determine the linear regression line using the data of combined lot generated in Part (c). Take
class mid-points of Size Range as the abscissa and No. of Components as the ordinate. [5M]
