what is shea?
A fruit that is harvested when it falls from trees that grow wild throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Its kernel is used to make the shea butter used in international cosmetics manufacturing.
Harvested and processed by over 600,000 women in Ghana alonewhere at least 2 million rural poor depend on shea.
One of few avenues by which rural Ghanaian women can earn money to pay for the healthcare and education of their children.
the problem
More than 30,000 women a year are bitten by vipers and mambas while harvesting at dawn and dusk.
The women involved in the shea trade receive only a fraction of its value because the supply chain is inefcient.
