Lesson 2.2 Graphing Linear Functions by The Point Plotting Method

This document provides instructions and examples for graphing linear functions using the point-plotting method. It explains that this method involves 1) writing the linear function in y=mx+b form, 2) making a table of x-y points that are solutions to the function, 3) plotting these points on a graph, and 4) connecting the points with a straight line. The document then demonstrates this process for two example functions, providing the tables of values and graphs. It follows with an activity asking the student to complete tables of values for additional linear functions and to graph linear equations by finding solutions and sketching the lines.

Module 2- Linear Functions

Lesson 2.2 Graphing Linear Functions by the Point- Plotting
Method
Key Points:
The steps in graphing linear functions/ equations by the point- plotting method are
1. Let f(x) = y.
2. Make a table of values showing three or four ordered pairs that are solutions of the function.
3. Plot these points on a rectangular coordinate system
4. Since the graph of f(x) = mx + b is a line , connect the points with a line.
Examples:
Graph the following linear functions/ equations
1. f(x) = 2x – 3 2. 3x + 2y = 6
Solutions:
1. a) f(x) = 2x – 3
y = 2x – 3
b) Choose at least 4 values of x and construct a table of values

x y = 2x – 3 y (x, y)
-1 y= 2(-1) – 3 = -2 – 3 -5 ( -1 , -5 )
0 y= 2(0) – 3 = 0 – 3 -3 ( 0 , -3 )
1 y = 2(1) – 3 = 2 – 3 -1 ( 1 , -1 )
2 y = 2(2) – 3 = 4 – 3 1 (2,1)

c) Plot and connect the points in the Cartesian plane

y

2. a) solve the given equation for y

3x + 2y = 6
2y = - 3x + 6
2 y −3 x 6
