SBA 5 - Osmosis

The document describes an experiment to investigate the effect of different solutions on the rate of osmosis in potato strips. Potato strips were placed in solutions A and B and measured every 5 minutes for 30 minutes. Results were recorded in a table and graphs were plotted showing the change in length of the potato strips over time in each solution. The discussion section will define osmosis and identify which solution is salt water based on the results, and explain how the lengths changed for each liquid. Sources of error, precautions, and limitations will also be discussed before stating a conclusion.

Title: Osmosis

Aim: To investigate the effect of different solutions on the rate of osmosis in strips of potato.

Materials:
1. Potato
2. Knife
3. Ruler
4. Petri dish
5. Salt
6. Water

Method:
1. Cut 5 cm long and 1 cm wide potato strips.
2. Place one chip in the beaker containing Liquid A and another in the beaker containing
Liquid B.
3. For a total of 30 minutes, measure the length of each chip every 5 minutes and record the
results in an appropriate table.
4. Plot the length of the potato chips versus time for both Liquids (A & B).

Discussion:
1. Define osmosis.
2. Identify which solution is the salt solution and which is water. Give reason for this
choice.
3. Explain how the lengths of the chips changed for each liquid.
4. Discuss results / observations.
