GROUP PROJECT

The Entrepreneurial Audit

With this assignment, you are asked to identify an established company and provide a thorough
critique of their operations from an entrepreneurial perspective. This assignment provides an
opportunity for you to use frameworks and tools presented in class to analyze the entrepreneurial
activities of the firm and to provide recommendations to develop its corporate entrepreneurship
activities. The assignment should include two parts.

Part One

Your critique should begin with a quite brief history of the enterprise including its founding,
owners and ownership structure, structural form, locations, expansion (both in terms of
facilities/locations and in terms of products/markets), and so forth. This history should be two
pages or less. The body of the paper should follow, and this should be the actual critique.

So, the operative question becomes what should be included in the critique section. Key issues
include:

- (THIS IS MANDATORY) Examine the entrepreneurial intensity of the company. How

innovative, risk-taking, and proactive is this venture? Position the company in the
entrepreneurial grid (see Chapter 3 of the reading by Kuratko, Morris, and Covin).
Characterize its entrepreneurial intensity, and discuss whether you think this is an
appropriate level of entrepreneurial intensity.

- Discuss the mode of corporate entrepreneurship adopted by the company. What model(s)
of corporate entrepreneurship does the company adopt? Draw implications.

- Diagnosing the external climate for corporate entrepreneurship. What is the external
competitive and innovative environment looks like? What are the critical resources that
they require, in your opinion, to effectively capitalize on the key opportunities
confronting them today?

- Diagnosing the internal environment for corporate entrepreneurship – leadership. Apply

the traits or characteristics associated with the entrepreneurial personality to the senior
executives of this organization and draw conclusions.

- Diagnosing the internal environment for corporate entrepreneurship – human resource

management. Look at the way in which the company evaluates and rewards employees.
Are the appraisal and reward systems encouraging entrepreneurial behavior? Explain
why or why not

- Diagnosing the internal environment for corporate entrepreneurship – company structure

and culture. What kind of structure and culture does the company have? What are the

1
key values? How are these reinforced? How strong is the culture? Is it supportive of
entrepreneurship? Is failure tolerated in this company? In what ways?

Part Two

You should then close with a section of tangible recommendations for change. How might you
use strategies and tools (such as but not limited to cultural change) to encourage
entrepreneurship?
