Expanding Vocabulary:
Read the following sentences focusing on the italicized words. Give the meaning of the
italicized words based on how they were used in the proverbs?
3. In Proverb 1, when can tiny drops of water dry up the sea? In real-life situations, how does this
happen?
Ans. Tiny drops of water can dry up the sea if it will continue draining. It means the amount of
dripping water was so much that if you combine all of them it could create a sea. In real-life
situation, you make people believe that you are rich but the truth is you are poor pretending to be
rich so that you can barge in and gain friends or you want to be part of that circle/group. Addition
to that, you continuously fooling yourself and draining your inner self. Stay real because if
someone really like you they will accept whoever and whatever you are.
6. Are there similarities between a bamboo with many nodes and a yam which is tough and
inedible? What does these two things mean in our life?
Ans. Yes there are similarities between the two. I'd say it's directed to people who aren't satisfied
with what they are doing and always complain to someone & thinks that nothing is good enough.

3. Do you remember those people who have told you proverbs? With whom you can compare
them in your life?
Ans. As far as I can remember my grandmother mention a proverb when I was young, my uncle
and teacher also when I was in grade 6. Right now my mother often gives me advices whenever I
have problem and encourage me all the time to do good even if someone hurt me. No matter
where they are from whether you hear it from a grandparent or a friend from another culture,
there is a proverb for just about every circumstance.
Enhancing Skills:
Exercise 1. List at least five of your favorite proverbs and explain why you like them most?
1. "The word of friend makes you cry - the word of an enemy makes you laugh."
Ans. A friend will tell you the truth, which sometimes hurts, but an enemy will only lead you
down the wrong path by giving you advice that seems good but is not. I really like this proverb
because it really happened to me. Thinking they were my friends but they’re not.
2. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a
lifetime."
Ans. Teaching people is better in the long run because it gives them the skills to provide for
themselves as opposed to you doing things for them. This proverb suggests that the ability to
work is of greater benefit than a one-off handout. I personally choose this because in real life if
you are not going to work hard you will not achieve or succeed. Don’t stop learning until you
reach your goal.
3. “It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.”
Ans. The experience of having loved someone is more valuable than being alone. I chose hurt
over peace. I chose to invest in a relationship until it had run its course, and I don’t regret it. I
haven’t given up on finding lasting love, even though the love I thought would last is over. I’m
happy to have tried, to have allowed myself to be vulnerable, to have given my heart license to
express itself to its maximum. And now I found my other half.

on your own experience, your friend’s, or a family member’s. This is a storytelling
