10
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.1 Example for MIQRO Controller Setup

IMAGE DESCRIPTION
A 50 mm lead distance
B 228 mm lockout - Lockout is the distance that the trigger passes from the trigger edge (in this case the leading
edge of the product) to the other edge of the product (the trailing edge).
C Start for line 1 of pattern (S1) = 13 mm
D End for line 1 of pattern: (E1) = 38 mm
E Start for line 2 of pattern (S2) = 189 mm
F End for line 2 of pattern (E2) = 214 mm
G Direction of carton travel
H Line 2 (L2) spot pitch = 5 mm (Spot pitch is measured from the start of one glue spot to the start of the next
glue spot)

Note: The measurements and settings given throughout this guide are specific to the gluing application
example above.

11
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.2 1. Controller Setup Mode

3.2 1. Controller Setup Mode

The system setup menu screens contain parameters which must be set for the output to suit the glue valves being used
and the application requirements.  These menu screens are not available in the normal mode as they are considered to
be mostly permanent settings which would normally be changed only during the initial system installation.
To access the system setup screens, follow these steps:
l Switch off the controller
l Press and hold the left and right arrow buttons simultaneously while switching on the power.

l Release both buttons.

Note: Do not power off controller until program settings are completed. Setup mode is exited by powering the
controller off.

3.3 2. Language and Units Adjustment Screen

While in Controller Setup Mode:
l Press the forward menu button until the following screen is shown:

l Press the increase or decrease button to select one of several languages available. (English is the default setting.)

l Press the right arrow button until the cursors highlight the unit format selection.

l Press the increase or decrease button to select Inches or metric. (Metric is the default setting.)

12
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.3 2. Language and Units Adjustment Screen

l PWM DC Limit - Do not adjust this setting. Contact distributor for more information.
l Spot Compensation - this setting adds compensation affecting all active valve outputs for the first spot only when
valves are in spotting mode. Adjustments are made in .01 increments with a range of 0-5 ms.

13
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.4 3. Output Mode

3.4 3. Output Mode

While in Controller Setup Mode:
Press the forward menu button until the following screen is shown:

Press the increase and decrease buttons to set the value for output 1 mode.

The options include:

l Off
l On
l Freeform – start /end positions can be changed “per output”.  The output will be equal in length to the trigger
input, minus the “start” and “end” offsets.  Therefore, a longer trigger input will result in a longer output signal.
l Run Hold – used for continuous gluing on a web.  The valve output will operate continuously in either line mode or
spot mode.
Press the right arrow button and the cursor will move to output 2.

Select the mode for all four outputs.

14
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.5 4. Set Glue Line Position and Lengths

3.5 4. Set Glue Line Position and Lengths

Measure and take note of the following.
The start position of the glue line or lines (maximum 4 lines)

The start positions are referred to in the Example as ‘S’.  The end distance for any line number is always
measured from the leading trigger edge.
Example 1:
Start for line 1 of pattern (S1) = 13mm
Start for line 2 of pattern (S2) = 189mm

The end position of the glue line or lines

Example 1:
End for line 1 of pattern (E1) = 38mm
End for line 2 of pattern (E2) = 214mm

Changing from solid glue lines to rows of spots

Any of the lines can be converted to a series of spots (See also steps 7 and 8).
Example 1: Line 2 (L2) spot pitch 5mm
Spot pitch is measured from the start of one glue spot to the start of the next glue spot.

Variable Spot Pitch

Variable spot pitch is used to ensure there is always a spot at the very end of the programmed line. If the programmed
line length is not divisible by the spot pitch then the spot pitch adjusts by a few fractions until it is divisible.

While in Controller Setup Mode:

l Press the forward menu button until the screen above is shown.

l Press the right arrow button until the cursors indicate variable spot pitch.

15
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.5 4. Set Glue Line Position and Lengths

l Press the increase or decrease button to turn variable spot pitch on or off.

Variable Pitch Disabled

Note that, with the variable pitch (auto pitch) adjust feature disabled, the unit is in fixed pitch mode. With the variable
pitch feature disabled, for the spot pattern to finish exactly at the end of the line, the line length must be equally divided
in whole numbers by the spot pitch.  An allowance may be needed for the spot duration.  When a line is switched to spot
mode, the line length remains the master setting.  Therefore, if the line length is not equally divisible by the pitch, then
the last spot may be left off and the line of spots will appear short.
Variable Pitch Enabled
With variable pitch adjust feature (auto pitch) enabled, the spot pitch is automatically adjusted so that the first spot
starts at the pattern start position and the last spot finishes at the pattern end position with an equal spacing between all
spots.

Note: If two or more lines are used, the spot pitch and spot time must be the same for all pattern lines.

16
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.6 5. Position the Glue Valves on the Machine

3.6 5. Position the Glue Valves on the Machine

Only one glue valve is used in the example. All glue valves that will be used must be positioned on the machine and
connected to the controller prior to proceeding with controller setup.
3.7 6. Position the Trigger Sensor
The trigger sensor(s) must be positioned in the correct location to detect the trigger edge.  In the example, the trigger
edge is the leading edge of the product.  Position the trigger sensor as follows:
l At least 50 mm ahead of (upstream from) the glue valve.
l At the correct focal height above the product (see the setup instructions for the specific trigger model being used).
It is important to maintain this focal height distance with product guiding, so that the trigger edge will pass directly
under the trigger sensor.
l Position the trigger sensor over a gap in the machine (preferred) or over a dark, non-reflective surface.
The trigger LED on the controller confirms when a trigger signal has been received.  The trigger edge can be any edge that
the trigger sensor can clearly detect, and is usually either the leading edge or trailing edge of the product or one of its
flaps.

The following steps demonstrate how to set the trigger parameters according to the parameters in the "Example for
Programming the Controller."
While in Controller Setup Mode:
l Press the forward menu button until the screen showing trigger information is displayed as follows:

Lead
l Press the left or right arrowbutton until the cursor flashes the lead field (minimum 2 mm).

l The lead value is the distance in millimeters from the trigger to the glue valve, and is normally set at 50 mm.  When
entered, this enables subsequent line delay and line length adjustments to be measured from the product’s lead-
ing edge.  If the lead distance subsequently changes,( i.e. if the trigger or glue valve is repositioned, then the lead
value must be altered accordingly).
l Press the increase or decreasebutton until a lead value of 50 mm is displayed.

Lockout
l Press the left or right arrowbutton until the cursor flashes the lockout value (minimum 2 mm).

l Lockout is the distance that the trigger passes from the trigger edge (in this case the leading edge of the product)
to the other edge of the product (the trailing edge).  The trigger will be disabled for the distance entered for the
lockout value, thereby preventing unwanted triggering caused by any holes or contrasting colors on the product.
l Press the increase or decreasebutton until a lockout value of 228 mm is displayed.

22
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.11 10. Set Glue Pattern Spot Parameters

3.11 10. Set Glue Pattern Spot Parameters

While in Controller Setup Mode:
l Press the forward menu button until the screen showing spot parameters is displayed as follows:

Spot Size
l Press the left or right arrowbutton until the cursors indicate the spot size parameter.

l The spot size controls the glue valve opening time, which governs the size of the glue spot.  The value is displayed
in milliseconds (ms) and is adjustable from 0.10 ms to 4.5 ms in steps of 0.01 ms.
l The spot size is dependent on several factors including the type of glue valve, the speed of the machine, the size of
spot required, the viscosity of the glue, and the distance from the glue valve nozzle to the product surface.
l Therefore, the spot size can only be accurately set while the machine is running at production speed.  However,
the suggested starting figure is as follows:
l Press the increase or decreasebutton to set the pitch to 5 mm.

While in Controller Setup Mode:
l Press the forward menu button until the screen showing compensation value is displayed as follows:

On Comp. (On Compensation)

l Press the left or right arrowbutton until the cursors flash the on comp parameter.

On compensation time represents the on response time of the glue valve, and is needed to keep the line
start position consistent.  This value is dependent on several variables including glue viscosity, nozzle size
and height of the glue valve above the product surface.  The value is displayed in milliseconds and is
adjustable from 0.00 ms to 50 ms in steps of 0.01 ms.

l Press the increase or decreasebutton to set the required value.

Off Comp. (Off Compensation)

l Press the left or right arrow button until the cursors flashes the off comp. parameter.

Off compensation time represents the off response time of the glue valve, and is needed to keep the line
end position consistent.  Like on comp., this value is dependent on a number of variables.  The value is
displayed in milliseconds and is adjustable from 0.00 ms to 50.00 ms in steps of 0.01 ms.

valve will stop when the machine stops, but will not start again until the trigger detects a new gluing cycle.
While in Controller Setup Mode:
l Press the forward menu button until the screen showing set/run is displayed.

l Press the increase or decrease button to toggle between the two options available: Set or Run.

25
MIQRO Four Channel Output 3.14 13. Set Pressure Regulation (GRU) Control

3.14 13. Set Pressure Regulation (GRU) Control

This screen is dedicated to the accurate control of an in-line glue regulator unit.  The control provides settings for four
pressure points related to speed.  These values are output from the controller in the form of a 0 to 10 V signal.  Four point
control is given to facilitate the rheology (flow under pressure) of different adhesive types.
The menu screen shows two columns of figures, the first being speed 1 to 4.  Speed 1 is always set to 0 m/min, and
maximum setting for speeds 2, 3, and 4 is 600 m/min.
The second column shows pressure P1 to P4, shown as percentages, 100% being the maximum pressure available at the
glue regulator unit.

MIQRO Four Channel Output 4.9 Variable Spot Pitch

4.9 Variable Spot Pitch

Variable spot pitch is used to ensure there is always a spot at the very end of the programmed line. If the programmed
line length is not divisible by the spot pitch, the spot pitch will adjust by a few fractions until it is divisible.

While in Controller Setup Mode:

l Press the forward menu button until the screen above is shown.

l Press the right arrow button until the cursors indicate variable spot pitch.

l Press the increase or decrease button to turn variable spot pitch on or off.
