Comprehension II
1. Why does the prophet categorically state 'Your Children are not your children'?
Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese American artist, poet and writer. 'On Children' is a selection from 'The Prophet'
published in 1923. The Prophet is one of the bestselling books of all time. The Prophet offers a critic of the usual
expectations of parents about their children and urges them to introspect. He states that a child's parents should not
becontrolling towards their child: rather they should give their children the opportunity to succeed on their own.
When it comes to child's thoughts and points of view, all that the child needs from his parents is never ending
support.
Your children are not your children” but many parents goad (pointed stick to drive cattle with compulsion)
their kids apparently without even sparing a glance as to what the child wishes or wants
“They come through you but not from you”
And though they are with you,
Yet they belong not to you”
This quote means that we are all God's children. We belong not to abeing on Earth. Rather we belong to the
man above. Some parents fail to realize this. They have come through us for a purpose of their own and some of
them are very different from their parents, in thoughts, attitudes, wishes etc
Kahlil says that they stay with you, but they do not belong to you. Each
one of us has to chart out our own paths and not one of us resembles the other. God and nature are so brilliant that
we cannot find even one fingerprint resembling another. Parents should love their children without binding them
with their own thoughts. Love is always divine and self less and free like bird.
2. What does the metaphor, bows and arrows signify with regard to parent children relationship?
Khalil Gibran was a Lebanese American artist, poet and writer. 'On
Children' is a selection from 'The Prophet' published in 1923. The Prophet' is one of the bestselling books of all time.
Kahlil Gibran's perspective on the issue of children is that a child's parents can only give them love so as to make
them confident to face all the challenges of life. But they cannot impose their thoughts. Parents can offer opinions as
choices but freewill or ultimate decision should be given to children. Parents should allow them to grow and
transcend
what personality they aspire. Parents should think that children areour future and the future cannot be stagnant with
the past.
The future can only be better and brighter because all beings(everybody) strive for perfection and that is not
possible with reference to the past because by focussing on the past, the present gets distorted.
Here Kahlil compares parents as bows, children as arrows and Archeras almighty. Bow has to stretch to
shoot the arrows. In the same manner parents have to stretch the limits of their thinking and living. The respect that
any adult gets, it should not be because of his age, but it should be because the next generation feels they deserve it
due to their thoughts which has become a foundation for their character and one day parents should look at them and
wonder, these were my thoughts but my child has surpassed (excelled) them and parents should hope to become like
their children.
Kahlil insist that is the day when any parent should be proud that theparenting has been good. No person
truly belongs to another, each person is unique. His fingerprints and mind is solely his own parents are the “bows”
that send the “arrows” of their children into future. Each is beloved to God who is their creator. The archer “God”
who cast the arrows wants it to go to a certain place; he really cannot make it go unless he holds the bow stable. So

that the arrow will go the way he wants. In other words, parents need to be good stable role models for their children
if they want them to stick to the path of success.

1. How did the present women Bachni Devi put up resistance to the felling of tress?
In this thought provoking essay, Vandana Shiva recounts on how she learnt the concept of
environmentalist from the uneducated women of Garhwal. While the government officials and men were
ruthlessly cutting trees for logs, the women showed them that the trees and forests were living things and
they need to live with them. She learnt that diversity forms life in the forest and there is a need to accept
diversity as a principle of life.
The women revealed that logging led to landslides, floods, scarcity of water, fodder and fuel. Forest
provide springs and streams food for their cattle and fuel for their hearths. Bachni Devi led resistance against
her own husband who had obtained contract to cut trees. The women declared that the forests bear soil,
water, pure air and sustains the Earth and all she bears. She asserted her right to accept earth as her mother
and man must learn to live in harmony with nature.
3. How does ‘harmony with nature’ help to reconnect ourselves with nature?
The author emphasises for the need to consider nature as our greatest teacher. Man in the name of science
and technology, globalization and urbanisation has upset the natural balance. We need to establish a strong
bondage with nature. We need to co-create with her and recognise the rights of nature in its constitution. In
April 2011, the United Nation’s General Assembly declared over the rights of the Mother Earth. Bolivian
Conference stressed for the ‘harmony with nature’ as part of the earth day Celebrations. The discussion
centred around the ways to transform systems based on domination of people over nature, men over women
and rich over poor into new systems based on partnership. The UN general secretary stressed on the
importance of reconnecting ourselves with nature. Ultimately environmentally destructive behaviour is the
result of a failure to recognise that human beings are inseparable part of nature. Any attempt to cause
damage and destruction to environment indirectly hints at causing severe damage to over selves. Any
separation from nature is at the root of disharmony with nature.
4. How does the concept of the Earth University teaches Earth Democracy?
Globalisation has intensified multiple crises. Hence we need to develop a saner outlook and attitude to
consider nature as the best teacher. The Earth University teaches the Earth Democracy. It is a freedom for all species
in nature to evolve within the web of life. Human beings have to accept freedom and responsibility to be the
members of the earth’s family and to recognise, to protect and to respect the rights of other species. It is a shift
towards Eco- centralism. Earth Democracy translates human rights to food and water to freedom from hunger and
thirst.
Earth university is located at Navdanya a biodiversity farm. All the participants learn to work with living seeds,
living oil and the web of life participants include teachers farmers and people from across the world. It advocate
organic farming and learning to live in harmony with nature. Man understands that the earth is gift of God and
belongs to all species. Earth Democracy teaches the principle of co-operation, harmony and live and let live as the
law of life.
5.“Conservation of diversity is crucial for the sustenance of both nature and human society” Discuss.
In this thought provoking essay, Vandana Shiva highlights on how she learnt the major ideas of a good life
from the forests. Forests are the source of life. They need to be conserved, preserved and protected for the
generations to come. She admits that she learnt all the major ideals of good life from the forests. She learnt diversity
of life forms and the need to accept diversity as the principle of life. She argues for the need to accept the Earth as
our Mother Earth and not as a raw material to be exploited. Man must learn to live in harmony with nature. She
asserts for Earth’s Democracy – in respecting the freedom of all species to live, to evolve together – ‘live and let
live’. She accords Tagore’s idea that the culture of the forest is the true Indian Culture. She asserts how forests teach
us the value of diversity, freedom and co-existence.

2. What do you know about the nature of Laura and Gonzalo from their conversation?
The play ‘A Sunny Morning’ takes place in a corner of a park in Madrid. Autumn season suggests old age Dona
Laura is a beautiful old white haired lady about seventy. She is cultured and sophisticated in her manners. Despite
her old age her mental faculties are unimpaired. She carries bread crumbs to feed the pigeons both Gonzalo and
Laura suffer from a sense of insecurity and loneliness. They need to have their own privacy in a public park. Laura
thought of Gonzalo as an ill natured man. She has a strong sense of disdain for him. Both of them are not willing to
accept their old age. Laura recognises Gonzalo and addresses him in an informal way. She expected him to wish her
good morning and he should have asked for her permission to sit on the bench which he doesn’t, both are possessive
and are grumbling at each other. She left the place not to please him, Mr Gonzalo lacked manners as he uses his
hand kerchief as a brush to his shoe. The lady expected him to be polite and well mannered. She recognises him as
her boyfriend once upon a time but she tried to pretend that she was a stranger.
3. What changes in their attitude do you notice between Laura and Gonzalo as they leave the park?
In the beginning, Laura and Gonzalo were attracted each other by their similar interests. Each tried to recognise
one another. Life is such precarious that it is hard to meet once upon a time lovers in a park. He remembered rightly
that the woman he loved was Laura Lorente who lived in a villa called Maricela. She was called the ‘Silver Maiden’.
She was ideal, fair as a lily and she had black hair and black eyes and sweet smile on her face. She was beautiful and
perfect. Everyone was captured by her sovereign beauty. The ways of God are strange & unpredictable. The gallant
lover she had couldn’t marry her. She was forced to get married to a merchant. There was a quarrel and dual between
the would be and the lover. The merchant was badly wounded in their fight and her lover was forced to leave the
town. Her lover never forget her. She never received his latters due to parental intervention. Gonzalo in despair
thought he lost his love to him forever. Hence he joined the army. He told her a lie that her lover met a glorious
death grasping the flag of Spain in whispering of his beloved Laura. She could not tell him that she got married two
years later. Fate is curious. They met by chance as strangers and discussed their own love story and conversed with
each other as if they were good old friends.
4. what do you think would have happened if Laura and Gonzalo had revealed their identity in the play, ‘A
Sunny Morning’?
Life has all sorts of paradoxes contradictions and unexpected twists and turns. The play ‘ A Sunny Morning’ is a
mixture of a romance and realism dealt in a comic way. Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo were lovers once upon a time.
Chance had brought the good old friends in a park. Although they conversed as strangers, yet in the course of the
play they were able to recognise each other as lovers. Both lied to one another. She was beautiful, perfect and
radiance to attract any body. Her gallant lover deserted her. When he came to know she was getting married to a
merchant Gonzalo revealed her lover as his cousin but in fact he was her lover. He lied that his met a glorious death

in the army whispering the name of his beloved. She could make out of it was an atrocious lie. She too informed
Laura as her friend and she awaited news from his side. She wrote his name on the sand. A tide rose with a boom
and swept her out to sea. They cannot become lovers now as they have grown old. Human nature is unpredictable
and so also the human relations. There has been an attitudinal changes in them. Thus they can become good friends
and meet each other on a note of friendship alone. They can’t become lovers as lots of changes affected their tenure
of life and ways of living. It is a pleasant shock to meet a good old friend after a long time.
5. When does Dona Laura realise that Don Gonzalo is her former lover? What circumstances led to their
separation?
The play ‘A Sunny Morning’ is an one act play. It takes place on sunny autumn morning in a quite corner of a
park in Madrid.
Dona Laura, a graceful, white haired lady of about seventy years is feeding pigeons in the park. Don Gonzalo,
a gentleman of seventy years gouty and impatient. At first, both of them sense each other encroaching on their
private space. But after sharing a pinch of snuff both of them come to terms with each other. They talk about their
hometowns and other things of interest. Don Gonzalo revealed that he loved a woman in a villa Maricela who was
perhaps the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. He also revealed that the girl’s name was Laura Llorente. This
revelation of Gonzalo helped Laura to realise that he was her former lover.
Dona Laura was known in her locality as’ Silver Maiden’. She was as fair as lily with jet black hair and black
hair and black eyes. She was in love with Gonzalo- the gallant lover. He used to pass her house on horse back every
morning through the rose garden and tossed up flowers to her balcony which she caught. On his way back in the
afternoon, she would toss the flowers back to him. But Laura’s parents wanted her to get married to a merchant
whom she disliked.
Gonzalo and Laura loved each other during their youthful days. But their affairs was short loved. They were
separated by fate. There was a quarrel between Gonzalo and a suitor who was a merchant. In the duel between them,
the merchant was badly wounded and Gonzalo had to conceal himself for a few days. Later he fled from his home
town to Sevelle and then to Madrid. Even though he tried to communicate with Laura through letters and his
attempts failed. He then joined army and went to Africa. According to Gonzalo, his cousin was the lover of Laura
met with a glorious death in Africa. Laura waited for her beloved’s arrival for days months and a year. Then one day
she went to the sea shore wrote her lover’s name on the sand and sat down upon a rock. The tide rose to the rock and
swept her out to sea. There are the unrealistic stories narrated by Gonzalo and Laura respectively. But in reality, after
three month Gonzalo ran off to Paris with a ballet dancer, and Laura on the other hand, got married after two years.
Thus the play presents the intricacies of human relations and the attitudinal changes brought out by the
unexpected circumstances. The play is known for deftly woven plot and artistic presentation of characterization.

1.How does Yeats blend the transient nature of beauty as against permanence of love in his poem, ‘ When you
are old’ ?
W.B. Yeats is one of the intense and passionate love poets of the world. ‘When you are old’ is a sonnet which
vividly presents different aspects of love. Love can’t be called love unless it goes beyond the physical attraction.
True love has a grace charm radiance and intensity to go beyond fascination and passion.
Old age is the best period for one to introspect on life and its varied facets. Thus the speaker imagines his
beloved in future when she is old. When she is old and grey she has to read his book of poems he has written. One
understands one’s youth better in the old age. When she reads his book slowly and intently she would think of the
soft looks her eyes had. She would recollect fondly how many lovers loved her physical beauty of the glad grace that
once she possessed them. She couldn’t distinguish between the true and false love. But she will remember the poet
who loved her not for her beauty but for her holy soul. He could make out her physical beauty is temporal and
impermanent. Love begins at the physical level makes them realise its transitariness. It makes them appreciate the
beauty of the soul which is stable and eternal. He loved her soul’s search for something meaningful. Soul’s world
makes him realise the limitations of the human body. She will remember the hidden face of the poet amid a crowd of
stars. Soul is opposed to everything in nature as it is beyond time and mutability and also is his love for his beloved.
Thus the poem enacts and endless quest after an ideal.
*********************************
In W.B Yeats' poem "When You Are Old," narrator requests of a former lover to remember her youth and his love
for her. The poem tries to tell the tale of this unrequited love the narrative persona feels. Unrequited love is the
theme for this poem and is illustrated through a number of different techniques. There are three stanzas in the poem
and it is written in the form of an ode, it is written in second person addressing a subject. The poem flows very softly
which disguises some of the deeper, harsher meanings of the words. The poet's language changes as the poem
progresses from stanza to stanza. In his opening, he instructs an "old and gray" woman "full of sleep" to "slowly
read" a book of memories from her youth.
As he moves to the second stanza, Yeats reminds his former lover of her "glad grace" that was loved by many. He
tells her that many had loved her for her beauty ( “how many loved” her looks) and he alone ,who loved her for her
“pilgrim soul” and that he loved her even as she grew less beautiful and as she changed in time. The once warm and
reminiscent old woman is reminded of an eerie and faded love that was never fully resolved, a faded
love that may indicate a hidden feeling of remorse from the narrator. The tone shifts with the language as Yeats
describes the “sorrows”. Yeats calls the old woman to "Murmur a little sadly" about those former days now that he is
through with pacing “upon the mountains overhead" and has now hidden “his face amid a crowd of stars." These
details provide a peek into the narrator's torn-apart heart as he evokes from her memories how patiently he waited
for her as sorrows of Time wore . This poem is more of a spiritual context of love evolving to a higher love. There is
true love of the man for the woman but with his emphasis of her as a pilgrim or loving the pilgrim soul in her seems
as though he is expressing a love that has been converted from or has now the element of a higher love, a more
spiritual love.
"And paced upon the mountains overhead, And hid his face amid a crowd of stars" - meaning the passionate and
very human love he had for her became more selfless or spiritual with an emphasis on loving the pilgrim soul in
heror the part of her that was her true soul and had nothing to do with her beauty. The crowd of stars speaks of more
heavenly and eternal things. He hid his face amid a crowd of stars, meaning he hid his very human love and
loved her with a purer love. The whole poem speaks of a melancholic mood of loss both his and of the woman's. The
fact that his love for this woman was rejected and speaks of both the love and her in the past, present and future,
shows how determined he was to gain her love even if that love had changed.
This is an absolutely beautiful declaration of love and lost neatly wrapped in a poetic cloth. Although the rhythm in
which the poem was written makes it appear that it may have been specific to the woes of love in Yeats own person
life, it still has a very universal meaning for its readers. It is a simple reference to life, love and growth. It has been
stated by many philosophers and poets alike that, "It is at the end of a man's life that he realizes how foolish he was
at the beginning". This poem is a true testament to the often ignorance of young or new love which in many cases
may lead to its destruction. Old age is like the magnifying glasses of life. It is often in old age that you are left with
the memories of both the mistakes and successes of your youth. We must look at life with the eyes of truth and
realize that true love is a gift that should not be treated casually. Like any gift that is not
taken in, it goes to the one who accepts it. This poem offers a warning to its readers to be observant to true love and
what it can bring because love that is ignored and or not reciprocated can easily become a regret.

invasion.
By now, the quarrel between these two had sucked in all their supporters. Tammanna was advised by his supporters
about thehundred acres. Tammanna did not agree. He was prepared to buy all the land that belonged to Basavaiah.

By now, the quarrel between these two had sucked in all their supporters. Tammanna was advised by his supporters
about the various means available for getting back his land. There was the court of law. One could also take recourse
to the police. If you did not want that, there were many number of persons ready to attack Basavaiah.
Such a war had become virtually inevitable. But Tammanna was in search of a method that could annihilate
Basavaiah completely. He hit upon the idea of composing all his experiences in the form of ballads and singing

towards an invisible, abstract domain.

UNIT 8
TO THE FOOT FROM ITS CHILD
Paragraph answer:
1.How can the foot fly or become and apple after it is buried?
Pablo Neruda is the pen name and later the legal name of the Chilean poet diplomat and politician Neftali Ricardo
Reyes Basoalto. The poet uses 'foot' as a metaphor for life and focuses on the changes seen in the
transition of an infant's foot into adulthood and finally death. Usually we consider 'foot' as physically belonging to a
person but Neruda sees in a philosophical way.
The foot' is a metaphor for 'life'. The poem focuses on the journey of a foot from childhood through adulthood and
finally death. In the initial stanzas it is very clear that the poet emphasizes on a child's foot which is
innocent and aspires to become an apple or a butterfly. Once the transition takes place, it grows up and is exposed to
the harsh realities of life. Over a period of time, It realizes that it is only a foot and serves throughout the life, until it
dies; It also realized that it cannot become afruit or a butterfly. Later when it dies and loses its human awareness,
it gets back its child- like innocence and starts dreaming of becoming an apple or a butterfly.
2. How does Neruda describe the busy life of the individual as represented by the foot?
Pablo Neruda is the pen name and later the legal name of the Chilean poet diplomat and politician Neftali Ricardo
Reyes Basoalto. The poet uses 'foot' as a metaphor for life and focuses on the changes seen in the
transition of an infant's foot into adulthood and finally death. Usually we consider 'foot' as physically belonging to a
person but Neruda sees in a philosophical way.
The poet uses 'foot' as a metaphor for his view of life. Life begins in infancy and in the poem, life begins as
an infant foot. The child's foot does not know that it is a foot. It starts walking over stones bits of glass,
streets, ladders and the rough surface of the earth. It realizes it is only a “foot” and cannot become a fruit or a
butterfly. Since it has to serve the role of a foot, it is imprisoned in a shoe. The child's foot as it grows old,
serves as the foot of a man or a woman, working in the fields or a woman working in the fields or market or mines or
ministries and work hard day and night until it dies. Thus, the freedom of the childhood is lost
when a person become an adult facing a life of constant work and struggle.
3. ‘Childs foot is not yet aware that it is a foot, and at the end the foot is unaware that it ceased to be foot’
How does the poet present ths idea in the poem?
Pablo Neruda very brilliantly describes the journey of a human being in the poem 'To The Foot From Its Child'. This
poem translated to English by Alastair Reid.
It mainly describes the human life's different stages from Fetus to childhood, childhood to adult age, adult age to
death and death to beyond death.
When child takes birth, its foot will not be awarethat it's a foot. It doesn't have any idea what it isexactly, mean time
it may feel that it likes to be abutterfly or an apple. But it is impossible because as it already takenbirth / life as a foot
(human). Later it comes to knowwith the help of time. Which tells it's physicaldevelopment, stones & bits of glass,
which representsthe problem, obstacles, difficulties of the life where asstreets represents which shows the way of life
andladders which helps to make growth in the life and allthese things make the foot to understand that it isneither a
butterfly nor an apple to fly or to bulge in thebranches.
Then the child was defeated by the problems or the things on the earth. Finally it falls in the battle of life and it
becomes a prisoner even it doesn't like or dislike. Why because it doesn't have any choice so even it has disappeared
to live in a shoe it has to live. Shoe not exactly stands for shoe but it stands for the
society on this earth.
How inside the shoe darkness will be there, like way the darkness of the society covers the foot (life) slowly and foot
grows on this world on its own way.
How a blind person leads his / her life in the darkness without having any proper image of the world like same way
foot leads its life.

The foot's soft nails have been compared to quartz which is bunched together to fight against the problems /
obstacles of the society and to grow hard and later it changes themselves into opaque substances and it becomes hard
as horn by facing the different situations of the society. Like same way tiny petal toes of the child will turns hard
with the trim in the sense it will get more expensive in its life. Foot will take the place of eyeless reptiles with
triangular heads like worms.
Day by day the foot becomes callused / hard and it would be fully covered with faint volcanoes of death. Once we
take birth, death is hard truth for us and we have to accept it.
But this blind foot / life walks / moves without having a rest, it never stops for hours, one then other like
alternatively foot moves until it gets final rest in life. The foot may be of man's or woman's will get sorrows,
happiness and it greed's and walks through fields, mines, markets and ministries. Some time gets failure some time
success and once out of the home on the other side in a home of our own mind it moves, moves, moves…
This foot works hard, fights hard inside the shoes of society with its short span of time to feel and admire all the
love, affection, grudges etc, etc. foot walks, humans walk until he / she reaches his/ her own fixed destiny in
common. Later once it reaches its destiny it descends underground, unknowingly without having any awareness
about the outer world and again it is full of darkness.
Meantime, again it is not at all aware of the world and about its new rebirth. How in the beginning of life it feels, in
the same manner now also it may feel
or think that it may fly or it may become an apple.
Thus the poet Pablo Neruda fantastically pectoral’s the human's life from foetus to beyond death and in between we
have to face the all situations
without having any of our own goals.

what we are and what we have been and also what we will be. Our past is nothing but a sequence of dreams. He
believes that there is no difference between dreaming and remembering the past. Literature to quote “Ever man feeds
it, ever man reads it. Time cannot age it and death cannot slay”. Literature is forever because its function is
irreplaceable. If books disappear then there would be no world to be interpreted.

Borges firmly believes that humiliation, misfortune discord were given to man to transmute them. One can overcome

thoughts. One can create eternal works that he aspires to be.
Goethe’s statement ‘All that is far becomes near’ refers to know misfortunes in life. Inspire new thoughts.
Goethe refers not only to the sunset but also to life. All things leave us. The visible world has moved away from our
eyes. But fortunately it has been replaced by other things. We have to accept the world as it is without regret, in
order to enjoy the things of the world better. We have to accept the world of reality as it is. Older world order is
replaced by the modern world order. He admits that he pretends that he is not blind and fills his house with books.
7. Why does Borges say that the books will not disappear in spite of modern modes of communication.?
According to Borges, books will never disappear. Such a thing will not happen. Books are the creation of creative
minds. Creation of books involves an aesthetic act of appreciation of the world around them. Writer has an
experience to communicate to his readers. It involves creative use of imagination and fancy.
Although people speak of disappearance of books yet modern development in communications will never be
able to replace books. Book is the most exciting expression of creative act. Writing of great masters sensitivise our
minds and sharpen our intellect. Technologies are the extension of human bodies. Telephone is the extension of our
voice, telescope and microscope are thee extension of our sight. The sword and the plough are the extensions of our
arms. The book is an extension of our imagination. Literature is a controlled dream. Man cannot live without
dreaming and remembering. Books are the record of the great memories of all centuries. Books will never disappear
and if they disappear history and man will disappear. Thus Borges asserts that books will never disappear from the
universe.

2. Why does the poet feel that earth is more beautiful than heaven?
K.V. Puttappa is widely known by the pen name Kuvempu. He is the first among the eight recipients of the Jnanpith
Award for Kannada, also the second after M. GovindaPai among Kannada poets to be revered as 'Rashtrakavi', a
national Poet. He was conferred 'Padmavibushana' by Govt of India and has penned the State Anthem 'Jaya
BharataJananiyaTanujate'.
This poem is the English Version of 'SwargaveBhoomiyoliradireNeenu' written by Kuvempu and translated by Prof.
C Naganna. In this 14 lined poem, the poet addresses Heaven in the first two lines. He states that if Heaven does not
exist on Earth, where else can it be. One need not have to look for Heaven in the skies, when it exists here on earth
says the poet.
The poet tries to argue that the concepts like 'Heaven' 'God' and the 'Nymphs' are created by man. It is simply man's
imagination. Therefore, man himself is God and so also the heavenly nymphs. They are not elsewhere best here on
earth. The poet wants to dismiss the belief that God and nymphs live in heaven and people go to heaven after then
death and find the God and nymphs there.
In the next stanza , the poet describes 'the splendor of Nature' and makes us appreciate and enjoy the heavenly bliss,
when we are alive. When one looks at the streams roaring and leaping down from the top of the hills , the waves that
roll across the sea carrying surf at their edges, the tender rays of sunlight falling on verdant gardens and the gentle
sun warming up the earth reflect 'Heaven'.
The splendor of harvest and the moonlight nights creates a picture of 'Nature' in its pristine form The poet who
imbibes this heavenly bliss can spread the nectar of 'Heaven' through his poetry on the earth.
Natural things appear to be more beautiful than imaginary things. Therefore, the poet is of the opinion that 'Heaven'
exists only on the earth and nowhere else. The so called pleasures of heaven could be very well obtained on earth,
when one enjoys and experiences.
SUMMARY:
The 20th Century Kannada great poet Kuvempudescribes how heaven lies on earth not above the sky in one of his
poem's called 'Heaven, If You Are Not Here On Earth'. From past days what we believe about the heaven where it
lies somewhere above the sky where gods, goddesses or sinless creatures reside that is not the truth but heaven is no
where it lies in this earth only through our duties.
Kuvempu describes that heaven is nowhere else it lies on this earth only. It is in the hands of humans how they
behave. Here we ourselves are God if we won't become Gods we can't find any of the Gods on this earth. We have to
believe in ourselves as nymphs or as angels who stays with Gods. Or else nobody can be nymphs who can be with
Gods. Heaven is there on this earth with all beautiful things of this earth. It lies only in eyes and heart that how we
see and how we receive the things.
Heaven lies in the nature, where in the stream which rushes fast with its roaring sound along with the surf up to
edge of the waves. Heaven can be seen
when the tender sunshine fall on the beautiful gardens and when it shines for the sunlight. Mean time the whole earth
would be shined from the gentle sun overhere.
Heaven lies in the splendor of harvest and of the moonlight. Harvest and moonlight represents thegood deeds of
humans and from that only we can seethe heaven on this earth. Finally poet says that every individual can create his /
her own heaven through their deeds. Here poet creates his own way of heaven
through his writings by imbibing and spilling the song of nectar all over the world.
Thus, the heaven lies nowhere but it lies in us, in our deeds. Our deeds are going to make us get heaven. It is there in
our hand to make this earth so heaven.

Paragraph Answer:
1. What changes do you noticed in the attitude of the villagers before the second election? Why is it so?
The story ‘The Voter’ presents how democracy as a system of government evolved in the African context. It
also depicts the dilemma of a person involved in the electioneering process. It throws the light on the role of people
or electorate in the democratic set up. It present an insight into the individual and the behaviour of the mass.
Roof was in charge of the service of the Minister. He was a real expert in election campaigning all levels. He
could tell the mood and temper of the people. He had warned the Minister months ago over the radical changes that
had come into the thinking of Umufian people since the last election. Roof asked the villagers to support Marcus.
But the villagers had their own plans. But quite recently tribal people have formed POP to save their own political,
social cultural and religious freedom. Everything was going on according to Roof’s plan but a visit from the leader
of the POP created its own effect on Roof people wanted to vote for POP for a change.
4. What was Roof’s dilemma in the story? Do you think every individual has to judge the course of his own
actions? Give your reasons.
‘The Voter’ is an interesting short story set in the African context and it depicts the dilemma of a person
involved in the electioneering process. The story presents roof’s predicament when he is compelled to get
himself into an embarrassing situation. It throws the role of people in a democratic set up.
Educated people may try to take advantage of a political system in a colonial situation. Roof had given
up his free will and bright future to return to his people and guide them. The village Umuofia had come
under the magic spell of their illusions, Marcus Ibe the minister who belongs to ‘People Alliance Party’
nobody doubted his win in the constituency. Roof was in charge of election campaign of the minister. He
was intelligent. Tactful and a clever manipulator. He knew how to campaign elections at the village local
government or national levels.
People of Umuofia had seen how politics is a means to gain power wealth titles, leadership, doctorate
degrees and other honours. People in power are seldom straight forward in their attitude. They use elections
a means to an end. Marcus Ibea unsuccessful mission school teacher had wisely joined politics to cover up
his moral lapse. He had two long cars and a huge mansion. He was devoted to people and returned to his
village which had neither water nor electricity. He has installed a private plant to supply electricity to his
new house but not to his people. He did host a rich party to entertain his people. But people had sensed that
he was an opportunist and he underrated the power of the ballet paper. Success in politics depends on
attractive promises the leaders make to their people. People demanded money from Marcus as he was
becoming rich and rich. Roof cleverly settled the bargain by giving three shrilling to all the people. But this
time people have their own political organisation called POP to support. Everything went according to
Roof’s plan. One day the leader of the POP campaign team paid a visit. He place five pounds on the floor
before Roof and asked him to vote for the pop leader. It put Roof in a dilemma. He even asked him to touch
the native god and take note. His one vote cast in secret would not take away from Marcus certain victory.
Roof was in a state of dilemma whether to betray the trusted leader or to go against the native god –iye, he
had promised. He just took the ballot paper torn into two along the crease and put one half in each box. He
was torn in his loyalties. He was put first half of the ballet paper into Maduka’s box and went out of the
booth rather jauntily as he had gone in.

WHERE THERE IS A WHEEL
Paragraph Answer:
1. Do you think women taking up cycling are as significant as the literacy movement?
PalagummiSainath is the Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu , who focus on social problems, rural affairs and
globalization in India. This essay is taken from his book 'Everybody loves a good drought'. ArivoliIyakkam'Light of
knowledge Movement' liberated a vast majority of the rural women in Pudukottai District by teaching them to read
and write along with cycling.
Yes, Women taking up cycling are as significant as the literacy movement because their experience has enriched the
literacy movement. The neo-cyclists were bound even more passionately much before to Arivoli, the Districts
vigorous literacy drive. Every neoliterate popularized cycling and saw a direct link between cycling and her personal
independence. It reduced their dependence on men. It offered a way out of enforced routines around male imposed
barriers. It gave them independence, freedom and mobility. The main thing it gave women was the confidence and
the sense of self-respect by becoming financially independent and by sharing the family responsibilities.
3. How does Sheela Rani Chunkath- the district collector, promote the empowerment of women?
Cycling of the women in the rural areas of Pudukkotai is the brain child of the popular former district collector Sheel
Rani Chunkath. It was her idea to train female activists so that literacy would reach women in the interior. She also
included mobility as a part of the literacy drive. Lack of mobility among women played a big role in undermining
their confidence. Chunkath pushed the banks to give loans for the women to but cycles. She also made each batch to
accept specified duties in promoting the drive. She gave personal attention to the problem. When the first activist
learned cycling then all neo-literates wanted to learn. Every woman wanted to learn how to ride the gent’s bicycles
too. Even the additional bar was not an hindrance to them. Thousands of women dreamt of the day, they will be able
to afford any bicycle at all.
5. How does P Sainath show that cycling brings about changes beyond economic gains?
“Where There Is A Wheel” is an interesting essay that elaborates the concept of women empowerment in the
ruralareas of Pudukkottai districts of Tamil Nadu. ‘Bicycle’ becomes a metaphor for freedom, equality, self-dignity,
self-dependence and a means to overcome the barriers imposed upon women. This simple act of riding a bicycle has
brought radical changes in the lives of people and empowered them. Cycling has taken a movement for socio-
economic changes in their lives of rural women ‘Literacy and cycling’ are the means to assert self-confidence and
development in their lives. It also adds ‘mobility’ to their lifestyle which in turn leads to rural development.
Most of the rural women, the neo literates have taken to cycling as a symbol of independence, freedom and
mobility. There were training camps for the women who have the desire to learn. It has given them the freedom.
Many women agricultural workers, quarry labourers and village health nurses, gem cutters, school teachers,
gramasevakes and mid-day meal workers have taken it seriously. Cycling has given them personal independence.
Arivoli training centre has given training to women. Cycling has reduced their dependence on men. Cycling offered
a way out of enforced routines around male imposed barriers. The new cyclist sing songs to encourage cycling. It
has led to the change or to move with the wheel of time.
The whole phenomenon was the brain child of the former district collector Sheela Rani Chunkath. She had used
bicycle as a weapon to spread education among the rural women and mobility as a part of the literacy drive. Lack of
mobility undermined the self-confidence of the rural women. Many activists learnt cycling and taught too many
people, its skills and hoe to acquire them. When there was shortage of ladies bicycles, some women preferred to use
the bicycles of men and asserted equality. After the International Women’s day in 1992, more than 1500 female
cyclists took Pudukkottai by storm. Women expanded their area and they can keep moving. It had economic
implications. It boosts their income and led to their emancipation. They can go to any interior areas without waiting
for the buses. Apart from economic value it has bought a sense of self-respect and independence. ‘Cycle’ has
become a metaphor for life freedom and progress.

WATER
Paragraph Answer:
1.How does the poetess succeed in presenting the disparity and discrimination in our society, using ‘Water’
as a symbol?
The poem Water explores vividly difference ways of social discrimination and injustice in a caste bound society.
Throughout the poem water is used as a silent spectator. It stood a witness to the acts of oppression and exploitation.
It had been a witness to know the generation old strife between the village and the wada, or the touchable and
untouchables. Such a strife never ends like the water’s edge that never dries. It has been a witness for all racial
discrimination and for all the sub caste difference. Water has known the agony of the panchama for not having the
right to draw the water from the well. It also knows the humiliation of a wada girl. When the man as an act of
kindness poured water to her pot made an attempt to molest her.

‘Water’ knows the righteous rage of Karamachedu Suvatramma, who tried to protect the boy from the attack of
the Kamma land lords. It was seen an act of protest against their ever discriminating attitude. Water has stood a
silent witness to the centuries social injustice. The speaker vividly recounts how her ‘Wada’ was forced to wait all
day to quench the thirst for a glass of water. It is in pot H2O for them. It has led to a mighty movement of Mahad
struggle at the Chandar tank. Others don’t care for water they waste but a single drop of water embodies tears shed
over several generations. In the many battles they fought for a single drop of it their blood flowed like streams but
they never managed to win or to get a small puddle of water.
The speaker fondly recollects, her childhood days on how she welcomed a weekly bath like a wondrous festival
while the entire village could bathe luxuriously twice a day. She had to walk many miles to reach the big canal and
carried back heavy pots and strained her muscles and veins. She remembers how the thatched roofs were put to fire
inMalapalle burning to ashes for a want of a pot of water. She knows the role, water has played and water is not a
simple thing for her. It can give life and it can devour lives. Water which couldn’t quench their parched throats
became the killer tsunami wave that swallowed village after village. The poor people are the play things in its hands.
In its absence water can cause drought and it turns villages into dry deserts. It can ignite many strife’s and struggles
between the village and the wada and between one state to another. It can make blood run in streams but it can sit
innocently in a Bisleri bottle. Water has become a commodity in the global marketing system. It has acquired a new
name – Mineral water. It forces them to do many a circus feat. Water is no mean matter but it has acquired a new
dimension of becoming a commodity in a contemporary market regulated world.
Thus the poem the water not only depicts the personal agony and suffering of a community but also acquires a
universal symbol to satiate human greed.

IV. Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it. 10x1=10
We live with sound. We speak through sound. A world without sound is unthinkable. The pattern
of sound changes according to the time of day. Let me recall the sounds I hear in the early
morning. The silence of my night is broken by the harsh grating sound of our tall iron gates as they
are pushed open at 5 o’clock. This is the time for my father to take a walk. At 5.30 the alarm bell
rings for me to get up. There is the scratching sound at the door. As I open the door our Alsatian
throws up its two paws on my shoulders and starts licking and producing a mixture of growling,
moaning and crying sounds. This is his morning greetings.
Now I try to get busy preparing for the examination, but the wooden staircase starts producing
creaking, tapping and bumping sounds depending upon the weight and speed of its users.
As my mother switches on the radio in the kitchen a ‘bhajana’ comes floating
into my room. The chink of saucers, plates and cups against the music is very enchanting to the
ears. Just then the calling bell buzzes and the Alsatian begins his non-stop barking.
The soft-sound of the crockery, the soft knock on the door and the clinking sound of the crockery
as my mother places the tea tray on the side board, please me. After a short silence comes the
sound of heavy steps. I hurriedly pounce upon my text books but not before knocking down a cup
that produces not only the sound of crash but also a few broken pieces. I hear the bass voice of
my father, “Remember, just one month left.”
And the figure recedes. Here is another alarm bell reminding me of my examination.
The world outside the house is agog with exciting and unfettered noise. The continuous cooing of
the cuckoo, the chirps and the twitter of sparrows on windowsills and songs of birds from the
garden create a sweet restful atmosphere. All of a sudden a school bus stops and children get into
the bus chuckling, laughing and shouting. As the morning extends, the traffic increases and street
sounds become tough. Clamour and hubbub rise. The rumbling of the trucks, the honking of the

Why does 29th February occurs only once in four years? To understand this confusing
arrangement, it is necessary to understand the calendar that is currently used in the United
States.
Nearly all modern societies use some kind of calendar to decide on the dates and times of
everything. Some societies use lunar calendars, which are based on the rotation of the moon
around Earth, and others use solar calendars, which are based on the rotation of earth around the
sun. The United States, like much of the rest of the world, uses a solar calendar. The solar
calendar used by most of the world today is known as the Gregorian calendar. Named after the
king Gregory XIII, who
introduced it in 1582, this modern calendar is the end result of hundreds of years of fine tuning. It
was developed by the Julian calendar, which was created in 46 BC by Julius Caesar. The Julian
calendar was also a solar calendar, based on the time it takes for the earth to travel one complete
loop around the sun. In Julius Caesar’s time, though astronomers believed that the sun revolved
around the earth, they still managed to make fairly accurate measurements of the length of a
complete cycle. A
solar year, they calculated, was about 365.25 days long.
Julius Caesar, deciding that it would be difficult to add ¼ of a day onto each year, ordered one
extra day to be added every four years to the month of February, creating what would be called
‘leap’ year. This calendar is used by the western world for over a thousand years.
Unfortunately, there was a problem with the Julian calendar. When Julius Caesar ordered a leap
year every four years, he was putting in too many extra days. A solar year is not 365.25 days long,
but in fact 365.24219 days. The difference between the actual length of the solar year and the
approximated value is very small, but over several hundred years it began to add up. By the year
1500, spring holidays were starting to happen in the summer.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII came up with an idea of how to fire the problem. He
reorganised it into a more complicated system. In the new calendar, there is still a leap year
almost every four years, but there is a new rule. If the year ends in 00, it is only a leap year if the
year’s number can be divided by 400. For example, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years but 2000
was. Over 400 years after its introduction, the Gregorian calendar is currently in use.

The U.S. Navy is planning to use armed robotic patrol boats with no sailors on board to escort and
defend warships moving through sensitive sea lanes.
The technology, adapted from NASA’s rovers on mars, will transform how the American
navy operates and is sure to raise fresh questions and concerns about the widening role of robots
in warfare.
The office of Naval Research has released the results of what it called an unprecedented
demonstration in August involving 13 robotic patrol craft escorting a ship along the James river in
Virginia.
In a simulated scenario, five of the robotic patrol boats guarded a larger ship, while eight
others were ordered to investigate a suspicious vessel.
The unmanned patrol boats then encircled and swarmed the “target” enabling the mother ship to
move safely through the area.
The demonstration, conducted over two weeks, was designed to “replicate a transit
through a straight” naval research Chief Rear Admiral Matthew Klunder told reporters in a recent
briefing. The demonstration was a “break through” that goes far beyond any previous experiment,
he said, adding that similar robotic patrol craft likely will be escorting U.S. naval ships within a
year. The patrol craft, 11-metre long vessels, known in the military as rigid hulled inflatable boats,
are usually operated by three or four sailors. But outfitted with the robotic system, a single sailor
could oversee upto 20 of the
vessels.
Unlike drone aircraft, such as the famed ‘predator’ and ‘Reaper’ planes, the robotic boats
are more autonomous and can carry out directions without having to be operated by a human at
every step.
“The excitement about this technology is it is autonomous” Mr. Klunder said.

The Egyptian Mummy
The Egyptian mummies have always remained a fascination for all and for all ages. The methods of
embalming or treating the dead body that the ancient Egyptians used is called mummification. Using
special processes, they removed all moisture from that would mot decay easily. It was an important
Egyptian religious belief to preserve the dead body in as life like a manner as possible.
The first step in the process was the removal of all internal parts that might decay rapidly. The
brain was removed by carefully inserting special hooked instrumentals up through the nostrils. It was a
delicate operation, one which could easily disfigure the face.
The embalmers then remover the organs of the abdomen and chest through a cut usually made
on the left side of the abdomen. They left only the heart in the body believing if to be the centre of a
person’s being and intelligence.
The other organs thus removed were preserved separately with the stomach, liver, lungs and
intestine placed in special boxes or jars. Such jars are called canopic jars. The embalmers next removed all
moisture from the body. Then, they did try covering the body with NATRON, a type of salt which has great
drying properties and by placing additional NATRON packets inside the body.
When the body had dried out completely they removed the internal packets and lightly washed
the salt off the body. The result was a very dried out recognizable human form. To make the mummy even
more like, sunken areas of the body were filled out with linen and other materials and false eyes were
added. Next, the wrappings began on the body. Each mummy needed hundreds of yards of linen. The

priests wound the long strips of linen round the body..they even wrapped each fingers and toes separately,
before wrapping the entire hand or foot.
Prayers and magical words were also written on some of the linen stripes. Often the priests
placed a mask of the person’s face between the layers of head bandages. Some times, the form was coated
with warm resin and the wrapping resumed once again.
At last, the priests wrapped the final cloth or shroud in place and secured it with linen stripes.
Thus the mummy was complete. They have stood the test of time intact for thousands of years, several
mummies of great pharaohs and famous queens have been found in the Pyramids of Egypt and have been
preserved in CAIRO museum for the benefit of posterify.

IV Read the following passage and answer the questions set on it. 10 x 1 = 10
The greatest defect of our civilization is that it does not know what to do with its knowledge. Science has
given us powers fit for the gods, yet we use them like small children. For example, we do not know how to
manage our machines. Machines were made to be man’s servant; yet he has grown so dependent upon
them that they are in a fair way to become his masters. Already most men spend most of their lives looking
after and waiting upon machines. And the machines are very stern masters. They must be fed with coal
and petrol to drink, and oil to wash with, and they must be kept at the right temperature. And if they do
not get their meals when they expect them, they grow sulky and refuse to work, or burst with rage and
blow up, and spread ruin and destruction all around them. So we have to wait upon them very attentively
and do all that we can to keep them in good temper. Already we find it difficult either to work or play
without the machines, and a time may come when they will rule us all together just as we rule the animals.
And this brings me to the point at which I asked what do we do with all the time which the machines have
saved for us, and the new energy they have given us? On the whole it must be admitted, we do very little.
For the most part we use our time and energy to invent more and better machines; but more and better
machines will only give us still more time and still more energy, and what are we to do with them? The
answer, I think, is that we should try to become more civilized. For the machines themselves and the
power which the machines have given us, are no civilization but aids to civilization.
24. a. What, according to the writer, is the great defect of our civilization?
b.We use the powers given to us by science like ________( fill in the blanks with right words from the
passage)
c. Why were the Machines first made?
d. How do most men spend most of their lives?
e.What, according to the speaker, is the food for machines?

A Years ago, in a small fishing village in Holland, a young boy taught the world about the rewards of unselfish
service. Because the entire village revolved around fishing industry, a voluntary rescue team was needed in cases
of emergency.
One night the winds raged, the clouds burst and a gale storm capsized a fishing boat at sea. The crew sent out the
SOS. The captain of the rescue rowboat sounded the alarm and the villagers assembled in the town square
overlooking the bay. While the team launched their rowboat and fought their way through the wild waves, the
villagers waited on the beach, holding lanterns to light the way back.
An hour later, the rescue boat reappeared and falling exhausted on the sand, the volunteers
reported that they had to leave one man behind as even one more man would have capsized the rescue boat and
all would have been lost.
The captain called for another volunteer team to go after the lone survivor. Sixteen year old Hans stepped
forward. His mother grabbed his hand pleading, “Please don’t go. Your father died in a shipwreck ten years ago and
your older brother Paul has been lost at sea for three weeks. Hans, you are all I have.”
Hans replied, “Mother, I Have to go. What if everyone said, ‘I can’t go, let someone do it’?
Mother, this time I have to do my duty. When the call for service comes, we all need to take our turn and do our
part.” Hans kissed his mother, joined the team and disappeared into the night. Another hour passed and finally the
rescue boat came back with Hans standing up in the bow.

excitedly yelled back. “Yes, we found him. Tell my mother it’s my older brother Paul.”

Rivers have played an important and life-sustaining role in human societies for thousands of years.
Many of the world's great cities lie on the bank of a great river. We love our rivers and we abuse them. We use
them as a source of water, for food, for transport, for recreation, as defenses, as a source of power to drive
machinery, and as a means of disposing of waste.
Rivers continue to be a very important source of food for societies around the world. Apart from being a rich

warfare.
The office of Naval Research has released the results of what it called an unprecedented demonstration in August
involving 13 robotic patrol craft escorting a ship along the James river in Virginia.
In a simulated scenario, five of the robotic patrol boats guarded a larger ship, while eight others were ordered to
