15. More Literary Elements-Digging Deeper

Personification is a type of figurative language, as metaphor and simile are too. Figurative language is when
you use a word or phrase that does not have its normal every day, literal meaning. Personification is when
you give an animal or object qualities or abilities that only a human can have. This creative literary tool adds
interest and fun to poems or stories. Personification is what writers use to bring non-human things to life.
Example: ‘My alarm clock yells at me to get out of bed every morning.
Look to see what is being personified in the poem below. Yes, that is right. It is fog. The author giving it
human qualities as if it can really move around like a cat does.

a) Identify what is being said from the following example below from the novel:
‘’A cloud had appeared earlier in the day. It was the first cloud he could remember seeing since coming
to Camp Green Lake. He and the other boys had
been watching it all day, hoping it would move
in front of the sun. Occasionally it got close,
but it was just teasing them.’’
Tease (verb ) 1. make fun of or attempt to provoke (a person or animal) in a playful way.

b) What is another example of personification in Holes and explain what it is below. Here’s a hint:

describes what the author writes: ‘’ ( Stanley’s ) muscles and hands weren’t the only parts of his
body that had toughed over the past several weeks. His heart had hardened as well. ‘’

Narrative Story Telling- Common Structures
A story has linear narrative if the events are recounted in the story following chronological order. In a story
with non-linear narrative, the events are told out of chronological sequence. Holes is an example of
nonlinear narrative. The author uses a good deal of flashbacks creatively to fill in details about the story.

The events below are listed in the order in which they are recounted in the story. Number the events in the
proper chronological order. (That is, the order in which they happened, not the order in which they’re found
in the story)
*Oxford’s definition: linear: adjective

1. arranged in or extending along a straight or nearly straight line.

2 .progressing from one stage to another in a single series of steps; sequential. "a linear narrative"

a. ____ Stanley’s great-grandfather was robbed by Kissin’ Kate Barlow. (Chapter 3)

b. ____ Stanley arrives at Camp Green Lake. ( Chapter 4)
