Section 1. New installation:


If this is the first time you are installing STAAD.Pro onto this computer, please check the following before inserting the installation CD: 1) Make sure you are logged in onto Windows with administrative rights. 2) Check the sides of the hardlock. Each side will have a sticker one with the hardlock label number and the other the serial number. The serial number for the program will be printed on a sticker in the following format: ****-*****-****-*****. You must use the serial number assigned to your specific lock. Otherwise, you will be unable to update your lock in the future. 3) Plug in your STAAD.Pro hardlock directly to the computer, if possible. Having other devices between the STAAD.Pro hardlock and the computer may create conflicts. 4) Insert the CD for STAAD.Pro 2005 and follow the instructions on the screen to install the software.

5) When the installation wizard asks you to select the security system type, select Local Security. Proceed with the following steps as instructed by the wizard to complete the installation. 6) After the installation is complete, start the program by either doubleclicking on the desktop shortcut icon for STAAD.Pro 2005 or by going

to your Windows Start menu, then Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => STAAD.Pro 7) If you are able to see the New dialog box, then the installation was successful.

Section 2. Updating to STAAD.Pro 2005 from version 2002,2003 or 2004


Updating your hardlock is only necessary when upgrading from one version of STAAD.Pro to another, or if you have purchased additional components. Your hardlock needs to be updated only once for STAAD.Pro 2005.

2.1 Start here to begin updating your hardlock for STAAD.Pro 2005
1) Make sure you are logged in onto Windows with administrative rights. 2) Look at the inside of the CD jewel case and verify that the lock number there matches the number printed on the sticker placed on the lock itself. You must use the serial number given in the jewel case for your specific lock. Otherwise, you will be unable to update your lock. 3) Plug in your STAAD.Pro hardlock directly to the computer, if possible. Having other devices between the STAAD.Pro hardlock and the computer may create conflicts. 4) Insert the CD for STAAD.Pro 2005 and install the software. 5) After the installation is complete, start the program by either double-clicking on the desktop shortcut icon for STAAD.Pro 2005 or by going to your Windows Start menu, then Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => STAAD.Pro 6) At this point, the software will attempt to update your lock automatically for this new version. If you are connected to the internet, continue to the next step in this section. If you are not connected to the internet, close STAAD.Pro, connect to the internet, then open the program again. If this computer does not have internet connection, please stop here and skip to Section 2.2.

7) If you are able to see the New dialog box, then the lock update was successful and you can stop here - you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. If the program gives you a message explaining that the lock is not programmed for this version, then continue to the next step.

8) From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Internet Direct menu and select Update Lock. The program should give you a message that the lock was updated successfully. If you can now open the program and see the New dialog box, then you can stop here you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. Otherwise, continue to the next step. 9) If your lock is still not programmed properly for STAAD.Pro 2005, please skip to Section 3.1, step 5.

7) If you are able to see the New dialog box, then the lock update was successful and you can stop here - you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. If the program gives you a message explaining that the lock is not programmed for this version, then continue to the next step.

8) From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Internet Direct menu and select Update Lock. The program should give you a message that the lock was updated successfully. If you can now open the program and see the New dialog box, then you can stop here you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. Otherwise, continue to the next step. 9) If your lock is still not programmed properly for STAAD.Pro 2005, please skip to Section 3.1, step 5.

2.2 Continue here if the machine on which STAAD.Pro 2005 is installed is not connected to the internet
1) You should have completed steps 1 through 6 in Section 2.1. If you have not, please go back and return to this section after completing those steps. 2) From the computer on which STAAD.Pro 2005 was installed, go to the Windows Start menu then Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Tools menu and select Get Hardware Lock ID. The program will report a Hardware Lock ID. Write down this ID. Then go to the Tools menu again and select Get Serial Number. The program will report an 18-character serial number. Write this information down also. 3) Go to a computer with internet connection. You will need a floppy disk. 4) Open an internet browser, such as Internet Explorer, and go to the following web page: www.reiworld.com/updatelock 5) Follow the steps on this page. You will be asked to enter the information which you obtained in step 2 above. The page will then display a link to a license file with the extension .LDF and a password. Insert a floppy disk into the floppy drive. *Note: If the web page is unable to generate your license file, it will report an error. If this occurs, please contact your local REI office for assistance.

6) Right click on this link and from the menu that appears, select Save Target As Save this file onto the floppy disk using the default name and select the Save As Type All Files. 7) Write down the password given on this page. Then take both the floppy disk and the password back to the computer on which STAAD.Pro 2005 was installed. Insert the floppy and copy the file onto your Windows desktop. 8) Open the REI Application Assistant again (Start => Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant). This time go to the Update menu and select Update Hardware lock. 9) When prompted, enter the path for the license file (.LDF) which you just saved on your desktop or click on the Browse button to locate the file. Also enter the password which was written down in step 6 above. 10) Once you have entered the information in these two boxes, click on Update Lock. The program should give you a message that the lock was updated successfully. If you can now open STAAD.Pro 2005 and see the New dialog box, then you can stop here - you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. Otherwise, continue to the next step. 11) If your lock is still not programmed properly for STAAD.Pro 2005, please contact your local REI office for assistance.

Section 3. Updating to STAAD.Pro 2005 from version 2001 or older

6) Send an email to [email protected] with the following information: your name company name the hardlock number (found on the side of the lock) Hardware Lock ID number from step 5 program serial number from step 5

If you do not have internet connection on this computer and are unable to send email, please stop here and skip to Section 3.2. 7) You will then need to wait for a response from the REI license department. 8) When you receive the response, the email will include an attachment and a password. The attachment will have the extension .LDF. Save this file onto your Windows desktop. 9) Open the REI Application Assistant again (Start => Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant). This time go to the Update menu and select Update Hardware lock. 10) When prompted, enter the path for the license file (LDF) which you just saved on your desktop or click on the Browse button to locate the file. Also enter the password which you received in the email. 11) Once you have entered the information in these two boxes, click on Update Lock. The program should give you a message that the lock was updated successfully. If you can now open STAAD.Pro 2005 and see the New dialog box, then you can stop here - you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. Otherwise, continue to the next step.

12) If your lock is still not programmed properly for STAAD.Pro 2005, please contact your local REI office for assistance.

3.2 Continue here if the machine on which STAAD.Pro 2005 is installed is not connected to the internet
1) You should have completed steps 1 through 5 in Section 3.1. If you have not, please go back and return to this section after completing those steps. 2) Write down the Hardware Lock ID and serial number found in Section 2.2, step 5. 3) Go to a computer with internet connection. You will need a floppy disk. 4) Send an email to [email protected] with the following information: your name company name the hardlock number (found on the side of the lock) Hardware Lock ID number from step 5 program serial number from step 5

5) You will then need to wait for a response from the REI license department. 6) When you receive the response, the email will include an attachment and a password. The attachment will have the extension .LDF. Insert a floppy disk into the floppy drive and save this file onto your floppy disk. Also write down the password given in this email. Then take both the floppy disk and the password back to the computer on which STAAD.Pro 2005 was installed. Insert the floppy and copy the file onto your Windows desktop. 7) Open the REI Application Assistant again (Start => Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant). This time go to the Update menu and select Update Hardware lock.

8) When prompted, enter the path for the license file (.LDF) which you just saved on your desktop or click on the Browse button to locate the file. Also enter the password which was written down. 9) Once you have entered the information in these two boxes, click on Update Lock. The program should give you a message that the lock was updated successfully. If you can now open STAAD.Pro 2005 and see the New dialog box, then you can stop here - you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. Otherwise, continue to the next step.

Section 4. New Installation


4.1 Installing the REI Network License Manager on the server
1) Make sure you are logged in onto Windows with administrative rights. 2) Look at the inside of the CD jewel case and verify that the lock number there matches the number printed on the sticker placed on the lock itself. You must use the serial number given in the jewel case for your specific lock. Otherwise, you will be unable to update your lock in the future. 3) Plug in your STAAD.Pro hardlock directly to the computer, if possible. Having other devices between the STAAD.Pro hardlock and the computer may create conflicts. 4) Insert the REI Network License Manager CD into the CD-rom. If the installation does not start automatically, then go to My Computer, open the CD drive and run Setup.exe. Follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard. 5) By default, the files will be copied to the folder C:\NETLM. Click on the Browse button if you want to select a different destination folder. 6) The wizard will them prompt you to select the type of security device. Select the appropriate option which corresponds with the type of lock you were sent with the software. 7) The installation will create shortcut icons for the License Manager in the Windows Start menu under Programs. The next step will allow you to name the folder in which these shortcuts will be created. 8) Click on Next to begin copying files to the server. A progress bar in the next window will indicate when this is complete. A dialog box will appear, confirming whether you want to install drivers for your hardlock. Click on Yes.

9) The installation will now ask if you want to install the license string. The license string is a file which was provided to you on a floppy disk and has the extension .LIC. Click on Yes then provide the location of your license string in the next window. *Note: If you do not have the license string on hand and want to add it manually later, click No when prompted to add the license string, or click Cancel to exit the installation wizard. For instructions on adding the license string manually, see Section 5.1.1, steps 5 and 6. 10) Once you have provided the path to your license string, click on Next. A message box will appear verifying that the .LIC file found will be added to the license server. If it has found the correct file, click on Yes. If not, click on No and go back to the previous step to add the license string. 11) The installation will then add the license string and check the drivers for the hardware lock. If everything was completed properly, a dialog box for Host ID Information Utility will be displayed. 12) Once the installation is complete, the SentinelLM service will start automatically. You are now ready to install STAAD.Pro 2005 on client machines.

4.2 Installing STAAD.Pro 2005 on the client machine


1) Make sure you are logged in onto Windows with administrative rights. 2) Look at the inside of the CD jewel case and verify that the lock number there matches the number printed on the sticker placed on the network lock. You must use the serial number given in the jewel case for your specific lock. The serial number used on the client machine must match the serial number assigned to the network lock in order for the program to pull the license from the server.

3) The STAAD.Pro hardlock should already be plugged into the server. Connect it directly to the computer if possible. Having other devices between the STAAD.Pro hardlock and the computer may create conflicts. 4) Insert the CD for STAAD.Pro 2005 and follow the instructions on the screen to install the software. 5) When the installation wizard asks you to select the security system type, select Network Security. 6) Next, enter for the name of the server on which the REI Network License Manager is running. You are then asked to provide the location of the .USR file. This file was supplied on a floppy disk with the network license file. Proceed with the following steps as instructed by the wizard to complete the installation. 7) After the installation is complete, start the program by either doubleclicking on the desktop shortcut icon for STAAD.Pro 2005 or by going to your Windows Start menu, then Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => STAAD.Pro 8) If you are able to see the New dialog box, then the installation was successful.

Section 5. Updating to STAAD.Pro 2005


Updating your network license is only necessary when upgrading from one version of STAAD.Pro to another, or if you have purchased additional components. Your network license needs to be updated only once for STAAD.Pro 2005.

5.1 If you are updating from version 2002, 2003 or 2004:


Updating the license on the server
1) Open the folder where the REI Network License Manager files are located. The default location for this folder is C:\NETLM 2) Run licadmin.exe, then go to the Tools menu and select Get Hardware Lock ID. The program will report a Hardware Lock ID. Then go to the Tools menu again and select Get Serial Number. The program will report an 18-character serial number. Write this information down or keep the program open. 3) Open an internet browser, such as Internet Explorer, and go to the following web page: www.reiworld.com/updatelock 4) Follow the steps on this page. You will be asked to enter the information which you obtained in step 2 above. The page will then display a link to a license file with the extension .LIC and a password. Right click on this link and from the menu that appears, select Save Target As Save this file onto your Windows desktop. *Note: If the webpage is unable to generate your license file, it will report an error. If this occurs, please contact your local REI office for assistance. 5) Open the folder where the REI Network License Manager files are located. The default location for this folder is C:\NETLM. Run

WLMAdmin.exe. On the left hand side under Subnet Servers, you should see a list of your license servers. Your current license should be listed under your server. Right click on the feature name and remove the feature.

6) Then right click again on the server, and go to Add Feature => From a File => To Server and Its File. You will then be prompted to locate the .LIC file which was downloaded in step 4 above. 7) After the license string has been added, you should see the feature NGSOFT01 appear in a branch below the server. When you highlight this, the license information will populate the Feature information on the right.

Installing STAAD.Pro 2005 on the client machine


1) Make sure you are logged in onto Windows with administrative rights. 2) Look at the inside of the CD jewel case and verify that the lock number there matches the number printed on the sticker placed on the network lock. You must use the serial number given in the jewel case for your specific lock. 6) Next, enter for the name of the server on which the REI Network License Manager is running. You are then asked to provide the location of the .USR file. This file was supplied on a floppy disk with the network license file. 5.2. If you are updating from version 2001 or older:

You will then be prompted to locate the .LIC file which was downloaded in step 4 above. 8) After the license string has been added, you should see the feature NGSOFT01 appear in a branch below the server. When you highlight this, the license information will populate the Feature information on the right.

6.1 Standalone Locks
The following is a list of several error messages that you may encounter while using STAAD.Pro. Each error message is followed by an explanation of how to troubleshoot the problem. If you receive an error message which is not a part of this list, please contact your local REI office for assistance.

Hasp Lock Not Found


From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Activate menu and select Detect and Activate hardware lock. Make sure that the STAAD.Pro lock is attached directly to the computer and that no other locks are attached. The program will search for an attached lock and prompt you with a message confirming that you want to activate the lock found.

Old Version of Lock Found


Your STAAD.Pro hardlock is not programmed for the current version. Refer to Section 2 (or Section 3, as necessary) of this Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for instructions on updating your hardlock.

Security Drivers are old


1) From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Internet Direct menu and select Update Lock. The program should give you a message that the lock was updated successfully. If you can now open the program and see the New dialog box, then you can stop here - you are now ready to start using STAAD.Pro 2005. Otherwise, continue to the next step.

Troubleshooting
2) Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, and go to the following link. It will prompt you to save a file on your computer. Save it onto your desktop. www.reiworld.com/upload/REISecurityDriverFiles.zip a) Open the zip file, REISecurityDriverFiles.zip, and extract the files into C:\Spro2005\Hardlock. You can rename or move the existing files of the same name to keep them as a backup. b) Double click on licadmin.exe, or go to Start => Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant c) Then go to Uninstall => Uninstall License System d) Then go to Install => Install License System

Hasp License Expired


The expiration date of your STAAD.Pro hardlock occurs before the current date. Please contact your local REI office to find out what is needed in order to reprogram your hardlock.

Expected Hasp Family does not match with the attached lock
From the Windows Start menu, go to Programs => STAAD.Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Activate menu and select Detect and Activate hardware lock. Make sure that the STAAD.Pro lock is attached directly to the computer and that no other locks are attached. The program will search for an attached lock and prompt you with a message confirming that you want to activate the lock found.

6.2 Network Locks


Network License Serial Number does not match with product serial number
The serial number used on the client machine must match the serial number assigned to the network lock in order for the program to pull the license from the server. This message indicates that the client machine is using a serial number which is different from the serial number of the license on the server. On the client machine: From the W indows Start menu, go to Programs => STAAD. Pro 2005 => REI Application Assistant. Then go to the Activate menu and select Activate Network/Corporate License. In the Network License Server window that appears, check the box for Discover Active License Server(s) In Current Subnet and click on the button Scan Network. The program should locate list of servers in the drop-down list. Select the server which is running the REI Network License Manager. Then click on the button Scan For Installed Licenses. In the list that appears for Available License(s), locate the feature called NGSOFT01. Select this license and click on the Select button. Start STAAD.Pro 2005. The program should now open properly and you should see the New dialog box. If any of the above steps do not provide adequate results, or activating the new license does not resolve the problem, please contact your local REI office for assistance.
