Rivera The Contemporary World

BA HISTORY 2-2 prof. Rolando Herrero

ANSWERS: LESSON 1 TO 14

Lesson 1: Globalization

Activities

• Name a few products that are produced by multi-nationals. Do you think that those
products influence your lifestyle? In what way?

Products made by Nestle such as MILO, Nescafe Coffee, Bear brand, Kit-kat,
Nestea, and chucky. Unilever products such as Clear shampoo, Dove, Sunsilk, Rexona,
and Closeup toothpaste are products that are produced by only two of many multi-
nationals in the Philippines. As a consumer of these product, I can clearly say that these
multi-national products someway influence my lifestyle, it influences my diet as I
consume some of these products in my everyday life and influences my lifestyle on how
I take care of myself by using some of hygiene products produced by the multi-
nationals.

• What is your reflection on globalization?

Globalization is inevitable and irreversible, it is a political and legal phenomenon

that changes the world, it makes every country in the world connected through trade
and other economic engagements. The effects of globalization are very evident in every
part of the world, we can see it in the worlds economy as every country become
economically independent while keeping economic transactions in other countries, more
of products that we use in everyday life are somewhat a product of globalization.

As like other economic and political phenomenon, globalization also has

advantages and disadvantages that makes it arguable if globalization is beneficial to
everyone or not, it truly helps the economy of globalized country by increasing trade
relations to boost economic income, but it also has a downside. Globalization makes
trades happens requiring such as shipping that requires fuel consumption and
production that requires labor and raw materials that all comes from nature, carbon
emissions and production waste affects the environment that we are living.

• Do you expect that globalization is beneficial to your life and society?

As a student that benefits on modernization that is one of the products of

globalization, I can clearly say that globalization is beneficial to my life as I was able to
enjoy its benefits such as modern technology that is very helpful during these days. In
the society it is also beneficial as it produces more work opportunities that helps to grow
the economy resulting in rapid growth of the society, it also makes goods such as food
and clothing more affordable for the majority.

Assessment

1. List your expectations from the course.

 As a student of this course, I expect to learn about globalization of the

contemporary world by examining the political, economic, environmental, and
social status of the world,
 To distinguish the different interpretations and approach of globalization and
what are the factors that drives globalization in the contemporary world.
 I would also like to learn the effects of globalization on different social units and
what are their responses.

2. Write a personal definition of globalization based on what you learned

Globalization is the growing interdependence of the world’s economies, cultures,

and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services,
technology, and flows of investment, people, and information. It is an inevitable and
irreversible political and legal phenomenon that changed the world. Globalization is can
also defined as interaction of countries in the world in terms of trade not only of products
or goods but also including service, people, and also knowledge that is beneficial to all
of the globalized country in the world.
3. What did you understand about globalization?

I understand how huge globalization affects the world, it makes every country in
the world connected and interdependent to each other because of the trade and
technology,

4. Do you think that globalization benefits everyone?

Yes, but the benefits are not evenly distributed. We can say that everyone is
enjoying the benefits of globalization because it helps the economy to grow, more work
trade relations are made and more work opportunities are being opened but this
benefits are not distributed evenly, there are some who benefits more and they are the
company owners and stake holders that profits on trades, large companies specifically
multi-national hold numerous products or brand making them more beneficiary in
making trades in other countries

5. Analyse the impact of globalization in our country.

Globalization in our country has been very effective, it changes the economy as
the country participates in world trade economy bringing more labor for the people and
more companies emerges to help the economy of the country. Since the Philippines
signs agreement with the World Trade Organization, there have been evident changes
in the status of the economy of the country but it’s not the same for all the class levels,
for the lower class levels it is
Lesson 2: Market Globalism

Activities

• What is the impact of market globalism in your life and your family?

Market globalism will make life easier as more products will emerge in the market
that will give us more options, options to choose for the best for us as a consumer.
Market globalization will also make products more affordable; this is due to the rise of
competition in the market, producers will find a cheaper way to produce their product in
a cheaper price so that they can be ahead of competition because of lower price, and
this will be good for us as a consumer. As the countries remain connected to each
other, technology, and information travels quickly and will make as updated to modern
technology that will help us to make life easier. To my family it will become more easier
for us to be connected in family members across other countries because of modern
technology, distance will not be a problem now because of modern technology and that
is one of a product of market globalism.

• Make a reaction on the connotation “Globalization creates affluence and poverty”.

It’s true that globalization creates affluence as it brings more economic benefits
for a globalized country through trade, it brings more work opportunity for the people
and more companies emerges that helps a country’s economy. But we cannot just look
at the bright side of globalization, like any other political phenomenon globalization has
also its disadvantages, globalization has been associated with inequality because the
poor do not always share a gain in the trade that is why they are being left behind and
did not enjoy the benefits of globalization. Another is that if a country that has low skilled
labor that produces low quality products they will lost in trade and this may result in low
trade income for a country, this may result in poverty indirectly because the one who will
not benefit in the trade are the poor ones.

• Do you expect globalization to be inevitable and irreversible? Why?

Yes, Globalization has become an economic trend in the whole world it brings a
lot of changes in every country in the world in terms of economy, it makes every country
more interdependent to each other in terms of trade, this trade includes exchange of
product, service, knowledge, and technology that largely contributes to the development
of countries benefiting from it. Shangquan (2000) Globalization is an irreversible trend
for the economic development in the whole world at the turn of the millennium. The
rapid growing significance of information in all types of productive activities and
marketization are the two major driving forces for economic globalization. In other
words, the fast globalization of the world’s economies in recent years is largely based
on the rapid development of science and technologies, has resulted from the
environment in which market economic system has been fast spreading throughout the
world, and has developed on the basis of increasing cross-border division of labor that
has been penetrating down to the level of production chains within enterprises of
different countries. Globalization will inevitably exist in whole world and the positive and
negative effects of it will become irreversible.

Assessment

1. Define economic globalization.

Economic globalization refers to the increasing interdependence of world

economies as a result of the growing scale of cross-border trade of commodities and
services, flow of international capital and wide and rapid spread of technologies

2. Analyse the different core claims about market globalism.

Claim 1: Globalization is about the liberalization and global integration of markets

This claims that free market must be more self-regulating market and more out of
control by the government to enjoy its vital function of rationality and efficiency and its
alleged ability to bring more social integration and material progress that can only be
realized in democratic society that protects and values individual freedom.

Claim 2: Globalization is Inevitable and Irreversible

This claims that Globalization is historically inevitable because it is not a young
phenomenon, it is started many years ago and a lot of trade relations have been made.
It also claims that globalization is irreversible because there is nothing that can be done
about the natural movement of economic and technological forces that emerged, we
can clearly say that globalization is truly irreversible.

Claim 3: Nobody is in charge of globalism

This claims that nobody is in charge of globalization, it says that globalization is a

self-regulating market and the adjacent idea of “leaderlesseness” Steger (2014) if the
undisturbed workings of the market preordain a certain course of history, then
globalization does not reflect the arbitrary agenda of a particular social class or group.
In other words, globalist is not in charge in the sense of imposing their own particular
agenda on people.

Claim 4: Globalization benefits everyone

This claims that globalization benefits everyone because it provides an

affirmative answer to the crucial normative question of whether globalization represents
a “good phenomenon” the said benefits is adjoining the idea of economic growth and
prosperity. It says that globalization brings economic growth in interdependent countries
and also bringing opportunities in the future not just for the countries but for all others
too.

Claim 5: Globalization furthers the spread of democracy in the world

This claims that globalization and market had something to do with the spread of
democracy, which also plays an important role in liberalism, conservatism, and
socialism. globalization supports the idea of liberalism, conservatism, and socialism that
is adjacent in the idea of democracy.

3. Articulate your stance on market globalism.

Market globalism is both beneficial and a threat, beneficial in a way that market
globalism will bring more trade opportunities in the country because of the idea of free-
market, market globalism is also self-regulating, meaning it has less control from the
government, everyone will be free to involve and benefits from it. Consumers like me
will also benefit from market globalism, competition will rise so that producers will find
their way to be ahead of competition finding cheaper way to produce their product and
sell in in a lower price to be ahead of competition and that would be beneficial to all the
consumers. Market globalism is also a threat for local producers, imported products
from different countries will enter the local market and takeover it, local products will
lose in the competition that is why it is also a threat for local producers.

4. What are the impacts of market globalism in our economy?

Market globalism somehow helps our economy to grow opening more

opportunities for everyone and companies will emerge that will help the economy, but it
will also cause some negative impacts in our economy, it will affect small businesses
and companies, market globalism is a threat for small businesses and companies in our
country because they may be forced out of the business, this is because they will lose in
the competition against huge companies specifically multi national companies.

5. Draw a very simple slogan on how you understand the role of globalism in our
economy

Lesson 3: The rise of global corporation

Activities

• What is your opinion of global corporations?

Global corporations are companies that was able to have their business in major
countries, they are huge companies that are on top of the competition, there were only
few of them and it is because it takes a lot of requirements to become a global
corporation. A corporation must be known to and was able to do business worldwide,
this is one of the requirements that a corporation needs to meet to become a global
corporation. I can say that global corporations would be beneficial in some way, it will
create competition in the market forcing the corporations to find a cheaper and efficient
way to produce their product for them to be able to lower the price of their product and
be ahead of the competition.

• Do you think that the presence of multinationals beneficial to your life and society?

Multinationals has both pros and cons, one of its pros is that it creates more job
opportunities for the people and that would be helpful for the society with large number
of unemployment rate like our country, another is the efficiency and lower prices,
companies would find ways to produce their products cheaper and more efficient so that
they can sell their products cheaper for the consumer. In the other hand multinationals
has its cons too, production waste of companies brings negative impact in natural
environment, factory waste and burning fossil fuels are the most common things that
affects environment. Monopoly is also a negative result of multinationals, in the long run
when most of the products and companies are in the hand of only few multinationals,
competition will not exist in the long run, and they will be able to raise the price of their
products.

• Describe the influence of multinationals in your lifestyle.

As a person that consumes the products made by some multinationals in our

country, I can honestly say that they influence my lifestyle in a simple way, the products
that they produce such as food influences my diet as I consume products that are made
by them, hygiene products that I use in my everyday life also influences my lifestyle,
these influences are very simple if we think but it is still a factor that can be considered
when looking at a broader point of influence of multinationals. These are maybe small
things that influences my lifestyle, but it’s still can be considered as an influence that are
brought by these multinationals and they may also bring influence in different aspects of
my life in the future as they continue to grow and expand due to globalization.

Assessment

1. Analyse the different kinds of global corporations

Four kinds of Global corporations:

 Decentralized Corporation
This kind of corporations may have many offices, buildings, and assets in
different foreign countries, but they still maintain their strong presence in
their home country While decentralized corporations typically don't have a
central headquarters, each country they operate in may have its own
management structure. This helps the corporation scale quickly while
ensuring it adheres to the regulations in each geographic area.
 Global centralized corporation

A centralized global corporation may have a head office in its home

country, where the chief executive officer and other senior leaders reside.
These corporations often look for opportunities to increase revenue by
purchasing cheap resources and materials from foreign countries. The
same management team typically handles both domestic and international
decisions. They also oversee all global operations.

 International division

Corporations may keep their domestic operations separate from their

international operations by creating an international division. This new
division is responsible for overseeing all of the corporation's operations in
foreign countries. While this structure can help companies reach a wider
audience and make decisions that appeal to different cultures, it can also
be challenging to maintain a cohesive brand image.

 Transnational enterprise

A transnational enterprise may exist within a parent-subsidiary

relationship. This allows them access to many of the parent corporation's
resources, such as their R&D team, even though they may operate in
separate countries. Typically, the parent company oversees the
transnational enterprise and makes decisions on its behalf. While they
typically follow a centralized leadership structure, this can vary from one
corporation to the next.

2. How do global corporations function?

Global corporations are responsible in the emergence of new markets, industries,
technology, services, and business models as well as unprecedented cross-border
financial flows and expanded global value chains, they are companies that does
business in different countries. A global corporation must consist of parent company, a
company where it started or established before becoming a global corporation, this
parent company is established in its home country where the activities are maintained,
controlled, and organized. To be a global corporation, the company needs to introduce
their product or service to the country of their choice, a country that suits their product or
service to ensure the success of the company in the chosen country, then the company
will establish as office and facility in different country to expand their market globally.

3. Enumerate some global corporations in the Philippines.

1. Apple

2. Microsoft

3. facebook

4. Nike

5. Adidas

6. BMW

7. Acer INC.

4. Do you think global corporations benefit our country?

No, Global corporations may give job opportunities to people, but these huge
companies have negative effects to small local companies in our country, small
businesses may go out of business because they will lose in competition against global
corporations, the closing of small businesses will result in lowering of economic income
of the country. Corporations can also manipulate taxes and laws to save money and cut
costs, this will also result the economic income of the country because only global
corporations will profit in their business in our own country. I think we should focus on
choosing local products rather than the products of these global corporations, this will
help small local businesses to go over the competition and even emergence of many of
them, this may help them to profit more and grow to help the economy of the country.

5. Discuss the different periods of globalization.

Period 1: Humanising the globe (300,000 BCE–10,000 BCE)

Climate change allowed (or forced, it doesn't matter in this context) people out of
Africa, and these people followed their food, fanning out across the globe. Consumption
and production were bundled, but not in fixed locales.

Period 2: Localising the global economy (10,000 BCE–1820 CE)

For the first time, agriculture brought the food to the people who wanted to eat it.
If you will, production was coming to consumption instead of the other way around. This
phase saw the rise of seven ancient civilisations in what are known today as Iraq, Iran,
Turkey, Egypt, China, India/Pakistan, and Greece/Italy. For the first time production and
consumption were bundled in particular locations, so it could be called the 'first
bundling'.

Period 3: Globalising local economies (1820–1990)

The steam revolution and Industrial Revolution meant goods could be sent
efficiently over long distances by land and sea. Steam thus unleashed spectacular
transportation capabilities that made it economical to consume things that were made in
far-away places.

This was the 'first unbundling' of production and consumption. It was caused by a steep
drop in the cost of moving goods. But, even as production dispersed globally, it
concentrated locally at the level of factories and industrial districts. For example, most of
Britain deindustrialised during the Industrial Revolution. Cottage industries disappeared,
and all the industrialisation took place in a handful of tightly circumscribed regions.

Period 4: Globalising factories (1990–present)

In the fourth stage, the ICT Revolution radically lowered the cost of moving ideas
as well as goods over long distances. Therefore, it lowered the cost of coordinating
complex activities at distance, which changed – and continues to change – the nature of
globalisation.

Lesson 4: Government and Citizens in a Globally Interconnected World

Activities

• React on the connotation “Nation-state is our last leg”.

Nation states promoted liberty, equality, and fraternity, as well as the right to
property and the pursuit of happiness. Representative democracies were set up along
with codified constitutions to enshrine the rights of the people. Nation-state is truly our
last leg in a globally interconnected world because in promotes unity, in this
interconnected world unity is becoming rare, people starts to adopt different political and
economical ideas from other countries sacrificing their nationality, this will result in lost
of unity of the people of the state, that is why we need to promote nation state to ensure
that we still have liberty, equality, and unity in this interconnected world. Migration as a
result of globalization is also one of the reasons of declining nation state, people are
having trouble on identifying and determining which state are they belong because the
mix of nationalities and races that causes confusion on the people, that is why we need
to consider what nation-state are we belong.

• Analyse your role as a citizen of the globally interconnected world of states.

My role as a citizen of a globally interconnected world of states is being a global

citizen, Global citizenship is the umbrella term for social, political, environmental, and
economic actions of globally minded individuals and communities on a worldwide scale.
The term can refer to the belief that individuals are members of multiple, diverse, local
and non-local networks rather than single actors affecting isolated societies. Promoting
global citizenship in sustainable development will allow individuals to embrace their
social responsibility to act for the benefit of all societies, not just their own.
• Do you understand the importance of your role in the society?

Yes, I understand that being part of this society, it’s my responsibility to

understand and to fulfill that role, as a student, I must study hard so that I can finish my
studies for me to be able to use everything I learned in helping the community that I
belong, in return for the opportunity of having free education, I must not only use it for
my personal gain but also for the betterment of the society that I belong. As citizen of
this country, I must obey the law and be responsible in everything that I am doing and
going to do in the future, I must be responsible specially in paying taxes, and lastly is to
be mindful of the environment that I am living, I must protect and take care of the
environment by keeping it clean and free of pollution.

• Do you understand the impact of new media today in your area as well as to our
government?

Yes, new media is a great innovation of human being, mass communication

using digital technologies such as internet helps everyone to be connected to each
other with few limitations, it became a faster and efficient way to spread information, in
just one click everyone can read or receive an information you sent, that is how
powerful internet is. In our government, new media also has a clear impact as it became
a faster and efficient way to spread news information for the people of this country, but
because anyone has their very own access to internet, everyone also has the power to
do it, everyone can post everything that is true or not true on the internet anonymously,
and that is what we call fake news. Fake news is one of the biggest problems in the
world of internet, everyone can post false and misleading information that may cause
trouble and it can be also use for cybercrime such as bullying, that is why everyone
must use new media properly and responsibly for the sake of everyone.

• What is your reaction to transnationalism in the Philippines?

Transnationalism for me is very beneficial for our country, it gives us chance to

do exchanges across the national borders, one of the benefits of this exchange is
migration, our country would be able to send manpower in other countries to work and
those are the new generation heroes, the overseas Filipino workers that greatly helps
the economy of our country. Our country was also able to exchange ideas, information,
and technology that will for the development of our country.

Lesson 5: Globalization of Economic Relations

Activities

• Do you realize the impact of economic relations in your life?

As a citizen of this country that has economic relations to different countries,

economic relations indirectly giving impact in my life, economic relations benefits the
country that I am living so as a citizen of it I also benefit in it, it brings economic
integration in the country affecting all the sectors of the economy such as the market,
changes in the market also changes the cost of living such the prices of products and
services, and as a consumer it directly affects my cost of living knowing the prices of
products and services inflates or deflates.

• React on the connotation “Convergence versus Divergence”.

In the world of economics and finance convergence and divergence are

described as opposing forces, and it is because convergence implies that two forces are
moving together while divergence generally means two things are moving apart, these
are used to describe a directional relationship of two trends, prices, or indicators. But as
the general definitions imply, these two terms refer to how these relationships move.
Divergence indicates that two trends move further away from each other while
convergence indicates how they move closer together. Traders are more interested in
divergence because it is a good signal to trade while the absence of convergence is a
good chance for arbitrage, the simultaneously buying and selling of assets in different
market to take advantage of price difference to gain profit.

• Do you understand the impact of trade and its policies in our economy? What are your
thoughts?
Yes, trade has a huge effect of the integrating economy of the Philippines, this
can be shown in the 2017 to 2022 economic statistic of the country. Philippine economy
given that 2017 figures show that total imports and exports (size of trade) is about 72.0
percent of GDP. The Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022 (NEDA 2017) also
identified trade as an integral component of the Philippine strategy for industrial
development through the expansion of markets and increasing the linkages of domestic
firms, particularly the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to GVCs. To this,
the Philippines has pursued forming trade agreements with key partners in the region
(Quimba et al., 2020). Trade also directly affect productivity showing that if the import
increases the labor productivity of the country also increases, these effects are only
possible because of the implementation of trade policies such as implementation of
trade tariffs and taxes that benefits the economy of the country in all of its sector.

Assessment

1. Why did European countries build the “European Central Bank”?

The European countries build the European Central Bank to conduct monetary
policy in the region by managing the supply of the euro and maintaining price stability. It
was established in 1998 by the Treaty of Amsterdam. Its headquarters are in Frankfurt
am Main, Germany.

2. Do you think it was the right decision to end the “gold standard”? Why?

Gold standard, monetary system in which the standard unit of currency is a fixed

quantity of gold or is kept at the value of a fixed quantity of gold. The currency is freely
convertible at home or abroad into a fixed amount of gold per unit of currency. It was a
great decision to end the gold standard because it may not provide sufficient flexibility in
the supply of money, gold is a rare and valuable metal that is hard to find so if we still
use gold as a currency today, the supply of gold is not enough to support the need of
the modern economy, mining of gold will also be excessive knowing that mining would
happen in any part of the world and that would be bad for our environment. Another one
is that if a country is only few on the world that still uses gold standard, it would be hard
for its economy to adjust in payments and in trade.
3. Give an opinion with the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty. What good did it do the countries
involved?

Cobden-Chevalier Treaty is a trade agreement that lowers or eliminate tariffs on

goods trade between Britain and France, this will be good for both country that is
involve, it will lower the cost of the trade

Lesson 6: Locating the Global South

Activities

• Reflect on “Starbucks and the Shanty”.

Starbucks and the shanty is no lie, we can literally see this in many countries
including the Philippines, Starbucks store in areas called shanty or places with clear
signs of poverty, and this is a clear sign that globalization creates inequality widening
the gap between the rich and the poor. Starbucks is a globalized brand but it did not
reduced poverty at all because globalization is not for all, it did not benefit every people
of a globalized country. To conclude with, Starbucks and Shanty are symbols that could
be compared to the global south in globalization, where global modernity exists, and
poverty remains globalized. Also, Starbucks and The Shanty are all about the under
sides created by globalization, that is why we cannot always just look on the positive
sides of globalization because not all of us are benefiting from it.

• What is your understanding regarding the global south?

Global south basically represents those countries that are technically and socially
less-developed countries, it captures a deterritorialized geography of capitalism’s
externalities and means to account for subjugated peoples within the borders of
wealthier countries, such that there are economic Souths in the geographic North and
Norths in the geographic South. The global souths are result of the inequality caused by
globalization and There are many causes for these inequalities including the availability
of natural resources; different levels of health and education; the nature of a country’s
economy and its industrial sectors; international trading policies and access to markets;
how countries are governed and international relationships between countries; conflict
within and between countries; and a country’s vulnerability to natural hazards and
climate change. If globalization is inevitable and irreversible then the idea of the global
south and north divide will the same.

• Do you think that globalization creates global inequality?

Yes, Globalization is a huge phenomenon that is inevitable and irreversible, it

makes every country interconnected and interdependent, the flow of goods, service,
technology, and ideas helps every economy of every country to be globalized, but we
cannot ignore its negative effects on the people and the country. Global inequality is
very visible in developing countries or what they call the global south, large buildings
and globalized business are everywhere in the cities of this countries but there are still
the presence of poverty, beggars are in the streets and houses made of scrap materials
are everywhere. This is the division between the rich and poor caused by inequality
widened by globalization over time, only the rich are getting richer and the poor are
getting poorer because not everyone is not benefiting in the good of globalization, and
another cause of this is a bad government, different levels of healthcare and education,
capitalism, and imperialism.

• What is your reaction now that the global south considered as internationalism?

This is better consideration knowing that internationalism advocates greater

political or economic cooperation among states and nations, this will lessen the idea of
global south being considered as less developed countries. Cooperation among
countries for their common good, this is also associated in the idea of nationalism or
devotion to a particular interest of a particular nation, this is also good to eradicate
global inequality caused by globalization.

Assessment

1. Is the article “The Starbucks and the shanty” applicable to the Philippines?

Yes, I believe that “The Starbucks and the shanty” is applicable in the
Philippines, there are so many Starbucks store here in the Philippines specially in rural
areas, it is also true that near or outside of every Starbucks stores you can see beggars
or shanty houses made of recycled wood and iron sheets, children in the streets
begging for help particularly in parking lots knocking on car windows, sadly its not just
the Starbucks that you can encounter shanty, because there is also other globalized
brands here in the Philippines that is having the same case, globalized brands such as
McDonals and KFC are indication of globalization but also indication of global inequality.
That is why the article “Starbucks and the Shanty” is very applicable to the Philippines

2. What is your opinion to the term “global south”? Should it still be used to describe
disadvantaged countries?

No, because the term Global south represent the global north and south divide
which means the division of the north which are the richer country and the south which
means disadvantaged countries, this divide only shows inequality caused by
globalization, there must be no division in globalization, every country must benefit from
it, it is true that there are countries that are not that wealthy that others, but putting them
behind a division, instead they can be considered as developing or not yet developed
countries because they still have a chance to grow and putting them under a division
prevents them from achieving it and we can see it as inequality.

LESSON 7: Globalization of the Asia Pacific and South Asia

Activities

• Do you think that the externalist view of globalization is beneficial to the Philippines?

No, externalists views globalization as a phenomenon that transforms the Asia

Pacific and South Asia. It can be seen on the one hand, as a power to bring economic
growth, political change, and social and cultural diversity to the region for the better, but
the truth, globalization has darker consequences including its role in economic
underdevelopment, removal of local customs and culture, and inequality. Externalists
are only looking at the positive side of globalization, a side that only few is experiencing,
they must consider the common good. In the case of the Philippines, externalists view is
not beneficial, the economy of the country is getting worse and it is visible in the
growing inflation, there is no political change, and local customs and culture being
forgotten.

• Do you realize the impact of globalization in your life and society? How so?

Personally, I was able to feel some beneficial effects of globalization, such as

improvement in standard of living, access to high quality education, technology, and
healthcare due to global expansion. In the other hand, globalization is not beneficial for
all because globalization has been associated with rising inequality, and that the poor do not
always share in the gains from trade. There are people in my society that doesn’t benefit in
globalization, they are the one who doesn’t experience standard living, no access to high quality
education, technology, and healthcare, they are the victims of inequality caused by
globalization. In sector of economy, small businesses are getting out of business because of

Yes, If I was the president of the Philippines, I would go against globalization

mainly because of its disadvantages. Globalization promotes interdependent and
interconnectedness through trade, movement of service, product, information, and
technology benefits the economy of country, but unfortunately, not everyone benefits
from it. Globalization also affects the local competition, because of market globalism,
multinational companies was able to do business in our country that forces small local
businesses to go out of business because of competition. Another one is globalization
