PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR A MACRAME

Globally, an estimated 92 million tons of textiles waste is created each year and the equivalent
to a rubbish truck full of clothes ends up on landfill sites every second. By 2030, we are
expected as a whole to be discarding more than 134 million tons of textiles a year. I propose to
you a solution: macramé.
Macramé is a form of textile produced using knotting techniques instead of weaving or knitting.
Leather or fabric belts are another accessory often created via macramé techniques.
Most friendship bracelets exchanged among schoolchildren and teens are created using this
method. Vendors at theme parks, malls, seasonal fairs and other public places may sell
macramé jewelery or decoration as well.

A solution for this is: as we already know, we have been separating our wastes and recyclables,
why not also make fabric segregation. Garbage collectors collect them and bring them to us, so
we can assure no scraps of cloths are rotting and are polluting the environment. Another is to
teach and demonstrate to people how they can make macramé by themselves.

Advertise and encourage people in the community to participate in segregating

their pieces of fabrics so we can recycle them.

Hire garbage collectors to collect them once or twice a week to deliver them to us.

Recycle the scraps and determine what pieces are fit into what kind of macramé
to make. (jewelry, clothing, designs, etc.)

Look for people interested in making macramé or people with no jobs and
employ and train them to make high quality designs.

Publish a line of business that only involves macramé and spread the word.
