Assignment#3
Assignment#3
1. A vibration isolation block is to be installed in a laboratory so that the vibration from
adjacent factory operation will not disturb certain experiments. If the isolation block
weighs 2000 lb, and the surrounding floor and foundation vibrate at 24Hz with an
amplitude of 0.01in., determine the stiffness of the isolation system such that the
isolation block will have amplitude of only 0.002 in.
2. For harmonic motion the structural damping force can be represented by the complex

form 𝑓 𝑖𝛾𝑘𝑢, or by the real form 𝑓 𝛾𝑘𝑢 | |
𝛾𝑘|𝑢| 𝑠𝑔𝑛 𝑢

(b) Determine an expression for the work done per cycle.
(c) Determine an expression for 𝑐 .
3. A balanced wheel supported on springs, as shown in fig 2, is rotating at 1200 rpm. If a
bolt weighing 15 g and located 5 cm from center suddenly comes loose and flies off,
determine the buildup of vibration if the natural frequency of the system is 18 cps with
damping of 𝜁 0.10

8. An SDF system consisting of a weight, spring, and friction device is shown Fig. 6. This
device slips at a force equal to 10% of the weight, and the natural vibration period of the
system is 0.25sec. If this system is given an initial displacement of 2 in. and released,
what will be the displacement amplitude after six cycles? In how many cycles will the
system come to rest?
