Philosophy of the SCN encompasses the Islamic philosophy of education and the aim of
nursing education defined by the International Council of Nurses. Accordingly, the college

Learning Facilities at Shifa College of Nursing

Classrooms learning
The classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with Multimedia,
LEDs, and whiteboards.

Skills Lab
Skills lab is an integral part of clinical learning where nursing students
earn a variety of psychomotor skills.
Skills lab provides an opportunity for the students to strengthen
their critical thinking and decision making skills under the
supervision of their teachers.
Learning psychomotor skills in the lab also facilitate students to
gain confidence before performing any procedure on the real
patient. After the initial training in Skills lab, the students are
sent for clinical practice to the hospital where they work under
the supervision of the faculty and registered nurses.

Science Lab
Shifa College of Nursing provides the facility of separate Science Lab
where students can perform basic science experiments. The science lab
provides students with necessary skills and technologies for laboratory
based investigations within biological and life sciences areas. The
laboratory is well equipped with analytical laboratory techniques and
equipments specifically in the subjects of Biochemistry, Life sciences
and Microbiology. It enables the nursing students to explore a variety of
laboratory techniques to be prepared and trained for the clinical set up.

Central Library
Central library is located in the campus of STMU-NCBMS Campus, 75
Service Road South, Sector H-8/4, Islamabad. The Students have
access to Internet and Wi-Fi facilities in the library. Students also have
access to the research articles and e-books.

Hospital Based Clinical Facilities


For the clinical placement, the college is affiliated with Shifa
International Hospitals Ltd. The hospital has recently received JCIA.
The hospital provide the students exposure to a number of clinical
disciplines related to all areas of medical and surgical nursing,
leadership and management, Pediatric, Gynae and Obstetrics.
Although the primary clinical site for students remain SIH, but for
certain specialized trainings, such as mental health nursing, students do
their clinicals in Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi and Pakistan
Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad.

Computer Lab
For all computer related work student utilize SCN computer lab.
Students also have the internet facility in the computer lab.

Community Based Facilities
In order to promote the vision of versatility in the training of its students, SCN is linked to the following
primary health care centers in the twin cities of Rawalpindi & Islamabad:
Shifa Foundation Community Health Centre (Falahee Clinic).
Regional Training Institute, Islamabad.
Under Privileged Areas of Islamabad.
Shifa Rotary Clinic (Noorpur Shahan), Islamabad.
Bari Imam Community, Islamabad.
Saint Thomas Church Community, Islamabad.

In addition, students also rotate through different local sites of interest like slaughter house,
pharmaceutical companies, Edhi Center, Lok Virsa etc.

Co-curricular / Extra-Curricular Activities
As a part of Co- curricular activities STMU arranges the Sports Gala every year. During the Sports Gala the SCN
students actively participate in all fields of sports such as football, cricket, volley ball, race, badminton and many more
games to show their hidden talent. The students also participate in debates, cultural and social welfare activities. Beside
sports activities the students also have the opportunity to participate in character building activities organized by the
Higher Education Commission and STMU.
SCN students also participate in different activities and events organized by the Shifa International Hospital.

MSN Thesis Defense

Department of Student Affairs


The first contact that a prospective student makes with the college for admission is through the Department of Student Affairs. That is the beginning of a
lasting and caring relationship, which extends even after the graduation of the student from the college. This office functions as a friend, counselor and
facilitator to the students.

The office provides and coordinates a variety of services including:


Financial Assistance Guide.
Admissions.
Registration with Shifa Tameer-e- Millat University.
Registration with Nursing Education Board Lahore.
Organization of co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
Verification of degree/ transcripts through examination Department.
Organization of graduation ceremony.
Registration and licensure examination with Pakistan Nursing Council.
Maintaining Alumni record and Transcript & Degree issuance.

The office also serves as a liaison between the college and parents. Student progress reports and attendance status are regularly sent to the parents as well
as to the sponsoring agencies.

For the smooth coordination between parents and college all the parents/ guardians are requested to update their mailing addresses, contacts and email
IDs with Student Affairs all the time. Student's personal particulars and academic data are maintained with confidentiality in the Department of Student
Affairs Office.

Hostel Facility
Hostel facility is available for female students.

Sponsorship
Shifa International hospital offers merit based sponsorship for the students.

Cafeteria
The students of SCN have an opportunity to avail the economy meal from the campus cafeteria.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
The BSN program commenced in January, 2004. Till to date a total of 434 students have graduated
from this program. The BSN program is spread over 8-semesters and the total credit hours for overall
program are 139. The program is recognized by the Pakistan Nursing Council.

The BSN Program fosters nursing knowledge, skills and professional attitude.

The main focus of the program is to prepare knowledgeable, clinically competent professional nurses
who will be able to provide comprehensive care at primary, secondary and tertiary levels within
hospitals and community settings. The program imparts theoretical knowledge and skills which are
grounded in evidence based practice to ensure safe and high quality nursing care. In addition to
theoretical knowledge and skills, the program aims to enhance critical thinking, decision making and
communication skills.

Eligibility Criteria:
Matric with Science (Physics, Biology and Chemistry as compulsory subjects)
Fsc (Pre- Medical) with 50% marks minimum (Physics, Chemistry and Biology as compulsory subjects) OR
A Level Certification accompanied by an equivalent certificate from Inter Board Committee of Chairman (IBCC).
Applicants between age of 17-35 years can apply.

Three Years Post RN BSN Degree Program
The Post RN BSN program commenced in January 2008. Till to date a total of 262 students have
graduated from this program.

The entire program is spread over 6 semesters. Total credit hours for overall program are 60. The
program is recognized by the Pakistan Nursing Council. The Post-RN BSN program is a three-year
program designed for experienced Registered Nurses. This program provides an opportunity to
acquire in-depth knowledge and skills needed for clinically competent professional nurses.

Eligibility Criteria :
Following qualification is necessary for an applicant to be eligible for consideration
Matric with Science ( Biology, Chemistry and Physics as compulsory subjects).
Diploma in General nursing.
01 year post basic diploma in midwifery or any other speciality.
01 year Clinical Experience.
Passing entry test and interview of the College.
Valid registration of all professional qualifications with PNC.

Note:
As per the HEC decision , those Nurses who have completed diploma in General Nursing or 4 year BSN before
June 30, 2016 without science subject in their Matric or Intermediate may also apply for Post RN and MSN
as the case may be.

Two Years Master of Science in Nursing
The MSN program commenced in September 2015. Till todate 42 students have graduated from this program.
The program is recognized by Pakistan Nursing Council. The total credits in the programs are 46.The Master of
Science in Nursing (MSN) program aims to prepare nurses for advanced clinical practice, education, and
leadership roles. Full-time students can complete this program in 2 years (4 Semesters) whereas part-time
students may complete this program in 3-4 years. At present two tracks are offered in this program that are
critical care and education. The critical care track in MSN equip nurses for extended nursing practice role in
critical care including patients' management and education, quality assurance, and evidence-based practice.
Whereas the education track prepares nurses for educator role in all settings in which education services are
provided.
As depicted in the table, the program consists of core courses and track specific courses. In addition to the
requisite courses, students will have the opportunity for elective courses that could be related to their tracks or
thesis work. Moreover, student will do a practicum for hands on experience related to their track. Completion
of thesis is also required for the MSN degree.

Introduction of the Program:
The internationally benchmarked PhD program at Shifa College of Nursing aims to develop nurse scholars
capable of providing leadership in research, education and practice. This program is designed to provide a
coherent series of courses, seminars, and discussions to develop in-depth understanding of content, methods
and values of nursing discipline in relation to other disciplines. This will enable the graduates to conceptualize,
synthesize, and utilize nursing knowledge for the advancement of nursing science to improve the quality of
human life.
Program Objectives:
By taking the PhD program at the STMU, the candidates will be able to:
Analyse, test, refine, extend and expand the theoretical basis of nursing practice
Exhibit the spirit of inquiry and lifelong learning
Practice critical thinking and problem solving skills
Demonstrate scientific writing skills
Collaborate with members of other disciplines in health related research of mutual interests
Conduct and disseminate research that generates and advances nursing as an Applied discipline
Contribute to the body of knowledge in nursing science and/or -practice
Program Duration and Delivery
This is a full-time course that takes three to four years on average to complete. However, the minimum
period of completion could be 3 years and maximum period could be 7 years. The PhD program is
delivered via face to face and research supervision with a faculty supervisor. Course-work in Nursing
Theories and Philosophy, Advance Qualitative Methods, Advance Quantitative Methods, Applied Statistics
for Health Professionals, Systematic Review and Mixed and Multi Methods Research is presented in the first
year. Students might also take an elective course in the first year. The subsequent years are focusing on the
PhD research process and is slightly more flexible.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), with a minimum CGPA 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the Semester System) or
First Division (in the Annual System) from HEC and PNC recognized institutes/universities.
MSN equivalent for foreigner students, such as Nurse practitioner
The applicant must have taken the following courses in their MSN program:
Nursing Theories
Biostatistics
IELTS Academic score 6.5, and not less than 6 in any component
Passing Entry test and interview of the college

As per the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan, the PhD program shall have a minimum
course work of 18 credit hours that is preferably completed in the first year of the study, followed by a
comprehensive examination and synopsis defense for granting candidacy as PhD researcher. The
curriculum at SCN consists of 22 credits (18 credits course work plus 2 seminars of 2 credits each). A

Admission Process

Submission of online
Entrance Test and Interviews
All the eligible candidates are required to appear for Shifa entrance
admission form
test. The test assesses ability to carry on the studies and clinical
requirements of the college.

Scrutiny of documents The BSN candidates will be tested for English, Mathematics, basic
sciences and analytical portion.

The candidates for post RN and MSN will be tested for English,
Mathematics, problem solving and basic nursing concepts. (Sample test

Confirmation of Admission
All the selected candidates will be required to confirm their intent to
Shortlist for interview join the college by depositing the admission, tuition and other fees as
prescribed, by the college within given time period.

program will bring students coming from varied backgrounds to a
