Equation of Straight lines
General form:
ax + by + c = 0
Where a, b and c are real numbers.
Slope-Intercept from:
y = mx + c
where m is the gradient (slope of the line) and
c is the y intercept (the point at which the line intersects y axis)
𝑦2 − 𝑦1
𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 (𝑚) =
𝑥2 − 𝑥1
Example 1:
Find the equation of a straight line passing through the point (1, 3) and making an intercept 5
on the y axis. Then rewrite the equation in general form.
Formula to find the equation of a straight line if we have gradient and one set of coordinates:
y – y1 = m (x – x1)
Example 2:
1
Find the equation of straight line passing through the point (-2, 3) with slope .
3
Direct formula to fiind the equation of a straight line passing through any given two points:
𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 𝒙− 𝒙𝟏
=
𝒚𝟐 − 𝒚𝟏 𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙𝟏
Example:
Find the equation of the straight line passing through the points ( -1, 1) and (2, -4).
