Pattern of Development in Writing: Problem and Solution

Topic: Poverty
The Dilemma of the Poor

According to the Asian Development Bank (2018), in the Philippines, 16.6% of

the population lived below the national poverty line and for every 1,000 babies born in
the country, 28 die before their 5 th birthday due to problems linked to poverty. Poverty
has proven to be one of the most daunting challenges that has plagued the country and
its citizens. A problem that is even more alarming are the consequences brought about
by the COVID-19 pandemic towards global poverty. According to a new analysis by
UNICEF (2020), 150 million additional children has plunged into poverty due to the
pandemic due to problems associated with education, health, housing, nutrition,
sanitation, and access to water. Global lockdown measures imposed to prevent the
spread of the pandemic has pushed millions deeper into poverty. Families that have
been starting to see signs of getting out of poverty has been pulled back in, due to
health protocol in order to curb the effects of the pandemic. According to the same
report, not only are more children experiencing poverty, the poorest are getting even
poorer as well. This is especially alarming, since global poverty pre-pandemic has
already been a pressing issue. The effect of the pandemic has reversed the effects of
years of economic growth towards the reduction of poverty on a worldwide scale.
Poverty is a major issue that takes a great amount of effort from the government,
the private sector, and society in general to tackle. A key solution to poverty that would
provide great effects in the long run is greater access to education. Through education,
people would be able to gain the necessary skills, and this would increase chances of
better job opportunities. Thus, the government needs to invest more on making
education free and accessible to everyone, especially those who live below the poverty
line. This could come in the form of subsidies for State Universities and Colleges or
providing allowances for basic school necessities. Another major point of consideration
would be access to health care. With the growing disparity between the rich and poor,
health care has been extremely hard to access for the poor which is manifested even
more clearly due to the pandemic. However, the most sustainable solution would be to
improve the economy that benefits all aspects of society. With better economic
programs, there would be better employment opportunities, and everyone could get a
chance in getting out of poverty. This can be achieved through adequate planning by
government officials, partnering with the right private institutions, gaining international
cooperation, and investing money where it provides the best benefits.
