The completion of this capstone project would be impossible without the help of people who gave
their own kind of support without a thought to the researchers. This section is intended to recognize those
people and the assistance they have provided the researchers throughout the duration of writing of this
paper.
First of all, we wholeheartedly thank God for bringing the members of this project together. Also,
we thank him for giving us the knowledge and the capacity to do such project even with some shortcomings
that gave us problems but motivated us to do more and finish the project to attain our goals.
Secondly, to our family who gave us unending love and provided our needs, emotionally and
financially. The absence of their guidance could’ve brought the members of this group astray and led the
completion of the project impossible, for that we thank them.
Thirdly, we would like to thank our external adviser, ENGR. PROSPERO, for filling us with the
knowledge that we lack to complete the project. Also, we would like to recognize the engineers from DPWH
Rizal 2nd District Engineering Office by giving additional references for the project.
Fourthly, we extend our gratitude to our Capstone 1 and 2 instructor, ENGR. TIMBAL, respectively,
by letting us expand our knowledge through this design project and advance our critical thinking abilities by
developing complex ideas.

time to critique and to give us their opinions regarding our design project to develop further the idea and
concept of our title.

ABSTRACT
The aim of this project is to design an efficient slope protection along Marilaque Highway in Baras,
Rizal, to protect against soil erosion. Along a 500-meter stretch of the highway, a design that will make the
affected areas secure as a slope barrier will be installed, providing strength and stability for the soil. The
project's primary goal is: (1) to design a slope protection along Marilaque Highway that can withstand all
loads, while adhering to the mandatory codes and design specifications set forth by the Philippine National
Building Code and National Structural Code, (2) to create a straightforward cost and estimate for the
proposed slope protection and, (3) to effectively select the best design of slope protection by evaluating
and selecting the trade-off with the most efficient and economical design based on the given constraints set
by the client. Typhoon Ulysses wreaked havoc on the area in November 2020, causing soil erosion. There
have been no reports of fatalities or injuries as a result of the landslide. Furthermore, putting a slope
protection in place to avoid this type of natural occurrence in the future is strongly recommended. Three
geotechnical trade-offs and three structural trade-offs were suggested for a 500-meter slope protection
along Marilaque Highway in Baras, Rizal, by the designers. In geotechnical trade-offs, Mechanically
Stabilized Earth with Geogrid, Nailed Soil Wall, and Gabions were proposed as trade-offs. Anchored
Reinforced Retaining Wall, Cantilevered Reinforced Retaining Wall, and Sheet Pile Retaining Wall were
recommended for structural trade-offs. The constraints to be considered in designing a 500-meter slope
defense were considered using Normalized Computation by the designers. The design must be cost-
effective, quick to build, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly. The winning trade-off to be used was
originally projected to be Anchored Reinforced Retaining Wall and Nailed Soil Wall. However, using
software such as Geo5, it was determined that Sheet Pile Retaining Wall and Nailed Soil Wall would be
suitable for the final design of 500-meter slope protection along Marilaque Highway in Baras, Rizal.
