CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’ S BACKGROUND

Introduction

In 2019, a new virus emerged from the severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

Coronavirus 2 Infection (SARS-COV-2) in Wuhan, China. It quickly spread across the

globe, triggering an epidemic in just few weeks. On February 2020, the World Health

Organization (WHO) recognized it as a new disease strain and named it COVID-19, or

Coronavirus Disease 2019. As a result of the virus ‘unchecked spread, governments all over

the world imposed rapid lock downs and community quarantines. Quarantine like these are

used to prevent the virus from spreading. However, some literature reviews show different

psychological issues like distress, anxieties and depression is encountered during quarantine

(Xiaong et al., 2020). The COVID-19 also reduced different forces in the economy resulted

to an increase in the number of suicide cases and other mental problems linked to high

unemployment rate (Mclntyre and Lee, 2020b). In addition, many studies identified that due

to lack of information regarding the virus, a lot of fake news are all over social media

platforms producing fears and stress (Erku et al., 2020). In relation to this , people in the

community are also suffering from anxieties and sadness when seeing the other members

experiencing the effects of the pandemic (Li et al., 2020). Deprivation of social interactions

during community quarantine has great impact on mental health and emotional health

adolescents, since they also known for handling different situations emotionally (Mendelson

et al., 2020). Thus, they are having difficulties in accepting how the pandemic affects the

world. In connection, Konstantopoulou and Raikou (2020) mentioned that the students do

not only face struggles in their daily lives but also in the new education system. Besides,

different learning approaches such as online classes and modular learning are implemented

during community quarantine. In accordance, Marshall (2020) described that schools are

important for it provides education and helps build social and emotional skills of the

students. The new learning system might lead to academic pressure and demotivation due to

an ambiguous and indefinite goals. To date, one published study by has explored the impact

of COVID-19 on student education and well-being. Approximately 25% of their sample

reported experiencing anxiety symptoms, which correlated with the increased concerns about

academic delays, economic loss and lifestyle changes. This study will focus on the General

Community Quarantine wherein, public transport is allowed but with reduced capacity,

minimum health standards as well as strict health protocols in groceries and establishment

(PNP, 2020). Cinemas, libraries, parks, mandatory wearing masks, curfews, no physical

classes and social distancing are also some protocols released by the Inter-Agency Task

Force. In line with that, this study seeks to find if there is a relationship between the

difficulties faced during quarantine and the mental health of students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine difficulties during the implementation of community

quarantine and its relationship to mental health of HUMSS12 students S.Y 2021-2022.

Furthermore, this study seeks to answer the following:

1. What are the difficulties encountered by the respondents during the implementation

of the community quarantine in terms of:

1.1 Income:

1.2 Modular learning; and

1.3 Health protocols?

2. What is the respondents’ mental health in terms of;

2.1Stress; and

2.2Anxiety?

3. Is there any significant relationship between the difficulties encountered during the

implementation of community quarantine and the mental health of respondents?

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following:

Students. This research will benefit the students by identifying the possible results of

experiencing difficulties during community quarantine that might affect their mood, thinking

and behavior.

Parents. The result of the study will bring awareness to the parents regarding the difficulties

faced by their children during community quarantine and how it affects their child’s mental

health.

Teachers. This study will help the teachers determine the difficulties encountered by

students during the community quarantine. With that, they will be able to understand that the

learner’s performance might be affected by the community quarantine and any other changes

in the society.

School Administration. This study may give the School Administration the possible ways

to extend help to those students who are suffering from mental health problems caused by

community quarantine.

Future Researchers. This research will benefit the future researcher which can serve as

their guide and provide them information relevant to their study

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses in determining the difficulties encountered by the HUMSS 12 students in

LANDY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL and its relationship to their mental health during

community quarantine. The study was conducted during S.Y 2021-2022 with the

participation of HUMSS 12 students. Furthermore, the data needed was gathered through an

online questionnaire.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

From the stated research problems in the previous chapter, the literature reviews and studies

are presented in this part.

Related Literature

According to Fawaz, Mirna & Samaha, Ali (2020), the view of the emergence of the

COVID-19 and the absence of treatment for it, Lebanon included home quarantine to help

flatten the curve and to help the overwhelming infected patients in the healthcare systems.

Quarantine, nevertheless, can be an inconvenient situation for those who undertake it.

Segregation from family members, lack of rights, confusion about the state of the illness, and

fatigue may trigger drastic results many times. Suicide has been documented, major anger

has been created and litigation brought after the quarantine was enforced in previous

epidemics. The quarantine practices manifested PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

symptoms in a small population in Lebanon. It is also suspected to be rising as the days

passed by.

Hawke, Lisa, Monga, Suneeta, Korczak, Daphne, Hayes, Em, Relihan, Jacqueline,

Darnay, Karleigh, Cleverley, Kristin, Lunsky, Yona, Szatmari, Peter & Henderson, Joanna

(2020), aims to examine mental health in conjunction with physical health during the

COVID‐19 pandemic among youth with physical health conditions compared to those

without. Youth are a particularly vulnerable group during public health crises, including

youth with pre-existing mental health concerns. In the context of COVID‐19, key

developmental milestones facing youth, such as school completion, labour market

engagement, social relationships, and autonomous decision‐making have been disrupted.

This may place young people at particular risk for the development of mental health and

substance use concerns during this time. The impacts of pandemic response strategies on

youth mental health therefore require research and any necessary future lessen action.

Mental health concerns are commonly among youth with physical health concerns and

appear to increase during the pandemic. Physical health concerns seem to establish risk

factors for raised mental health responses to this situation.

According to Chakraborty, Nandini (2015) said that there is a significant evidence that a

novel illness such as COVID‐19 can cause widespread fear, panic, anxiety, and xenophobia.

He stated that the mental health issues of sufferers of an epidemic, frontline health workers

and the social and psychological impact on society at large show significant similarities

between our past experiences of viral diseases although the scale and impact of COVID-19

has led to an intensity of effects before anomalous by other viral pandemics. Nevertheless,

the impact on the global economy shows the complex way in which human race is

interdependent and connected through its various communities, institutions, and global

infrastructure. While the research for a vaccine and cure continuous and our knowledge

about COVID-19 grows, it is also a time to take a step back and look at what we already

know of mental health and social impacts of pandemics, especially novel viral pandemics,

and put that knowledge to work. Furthermore, there are notable concerns about the rise of

violence at a time of social distancing, unemployment, and widespread financial volatility.

In an online survey conducted by DOST (2020), the respondents showed two of the often

experienced difficulties during the community quarantine, first, working/studying at home

and second, income affected by the missing number of workdays due to closure of most of

the industries. In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic and community quarantine, the

internet was cited as one of the main sources of information regarding the development and

other information about the pandemic. In terms of coping mechanisms, it is primarily

acceptance followed by self-distractions.

Chua, Paolo (2020), explored the feelings and responses of people on the timeline of

pandemic as well as the action of the government. In adjusting to the new studying and

working at home, people are naturally worried about the missing working days, which lead

to self-distractions. These distractions can be by merely accepting all the changes or even

distractions by trying different trends online, this helps in coping with the stress and

behaviour changes during isolation.

Related Studies

The Chinese government has established strict domestic quarantine policies all over

their country. This immediate response has effectively reduced the spread of new cases of

infection on the Chinese mainland and also around the world. Furthermore, the government

has gone through a series of measures to prevent possible mental health problems who are

quarantined. Nurses are guaranteed to be accessible at any time a day in the children's

isolated room in many Chinese tier 1 cities, including such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, and

Hangzhou, that is generally the largest and wealthiest. Children who are quarantined can

communicate with their parents at any time via mobile devices, which helps to reduce

discomfort and other psychological distress. Children may be thrown into a state of crisis

whenever they are apart from their caregivers, which might increase the possibility of mental

illnesses. According to the colleagues, children who were isolated or quarantined during

pandemic diseases were more likely to suffer acute stress disorder, adjustment disorder, and

grief. Parental separation or loss during quarantine period has long-term negative impacts on

mental health and it also includes the increased risk of developing depressive symptoms and

psychosis, and even more may come to suicide death in adulthood. Separation of parents and

children in the first few years after birth may affect existing bonding mechanisms, which

may be related to worse mental health outcomes. (Liu, Jia Jia, Bao, Yanping, Huang,

Xiaolin, Shi, Jie & Lu, Lin, 2020).

A study by Prasetyo, Yogi, Castillo, Allysa, Salonga, Louie, Sia, & Seneta, Joshua

(2020) analysed the impact of enhanced community quarantine on the entire Luzon,

Philippines. The results showed that females are more affected than the males. It also

presented high levels of anxiety, stress, depression and psychological impact to the less

educated, children and adolescents. The students reported greater psychological impact as

well as more depressive, anxiety and stress symptoms compared to those who are employed.

A comprehensive review by Brooks, K., Webster, R., Smith, L., Woodland, L., Wessely,

S., Greenberg, N & Rubin, G. (2020), determined the factors that induce psychological

distress during quarantine. The quarantine-related symptoms of stress have been reported to

be associated with several negative psychological outcomes such as low mood, irritability,

insomnia, anger, and emotional exhaustion. When surveying the symptoms of stress

worldwide, it shows that the act of quarantine was the most related factor to the development

of acute stress disorder. Suicide has been reported, substantial anger generated, and lawsuits

brought following the imposition of quarantine in previous outbreaks. The potential benefits

of mandatory mass quarantine need to be weighed carefully against the possible

psychological costs.

University students who did not move-in with their parents when the quarantine began

were affected by increased stress. Covid-19 confinement strategies are often contrary to

evidence-based therapies used to treat mental disorders. There are limited data concerning

the mental health consequences of home confinement or social isolation imposed by societal-

level threats. Due to Covid-19, the majority of published findings to date concerning the

effects of epidemics on the onset or severity of mental disorders were conducted on other

infectious diseases. University students may constitute a particularly vulnerable population

for mental health problems in light of challenges commonly associated with transitions to

adulthood and the frequent economic and material difficulties of this population (Husky et

al., 2020).

According to a study by Saurabh, Kumar and Ranjan, Shilpi (2020), companionship and

social interactions are vital parts in building a child’s psychological development and well-

being. The study was conducted during the COVID-19 outbreak were children and

adolescents ranging from 9 to 18 years old were placed in home/facility quarantine.

Healthcare workers accompany the respondents in order to determine the quarantine

behaviour, socio-economic and psychological impacts. Adolescents recognized that

quarantine is implemented in order to protect the community. While understanding the

importance of quarantine, the results also presented a high rate of psychological distress of

the quarantined children compared to the non-quarantined ones. The study also reported a

range of feelings of psychological impact. The most evident feelings experienced are worry,

helplessness and fear. Other psychological problems like nervousness, anxiety, anxiety

related insomnias and sadness are also common in the group. Sufficient funding, compliance

and understanding on the different quarantine behaviour as well as improved preparations

and cooperation with experts and skilled people can help reduce the psychological impact of

the implementation of community quarantine.

Synthesis

According to Fawaz, Mirna & Samaha, Ali(2020), the view of the COVID-19 and the

absence of treatment for it, Lebanon included home quarantine to help flatten the curve and

to help in overwhelming of patients infected in the healthcare system. In addition, Liu, Jia

Jia, Bao, Yanping, Huang, Xiaolin, Shi, Jie & Lu, Lin (2020) stated that immediate response

has effectively reduced the spread of new cases of infection on the Chines mainland and also

around the world.

On the other hand, Holmes et al., 2020;Perrin, McCabe, Everly Jr., & Links (2009)

cited that youth are a particularly vulnerable group during public health crises, including

youth with pre-existing mental health concerns. While, Saurah, Kumar, and Ranjan, Shilpi

distractions can be merely accepting all then changes or even distractions by trying different

trends online, this helps in coping with the stress and behaviour changes during isolation.

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the difficulties encountered during the

implementation of community quarantine and the respondent’s mental health.

Definition of Terms

The following words are defined using operational definitions for clarity:

Anxiety. This refers to the worries driven by difficulties experienced and too much stress

during community quarantine.

Behavior. This refers to the manner in which one acts or behaves, towards other individuals

and circumstances.

Covid-19. This refers to new strain virus that came from the SARS-COV-2 and became a

pandemic, which caused the lockdowns and quarantines around the globe.

General Community Quarantine (GCQ). This refers to a more at ease type of community

quarantine implemented by the government in provinces, which allows the different sectors

to function but with the strict rules and protocols to follow.

Health Protocols. This refers to the implemented protocols by the government in order to
control the spread of the virus. This includes protocols such as social distancing, mandatory
wearing of face shield and face masks, proper coughing and sneezing etiquette.
Income. This refers to financial source/s of a family. It is mainly affected due to the sudden
shutdown of almost of all the industries during quarantine caused by the risks brought by the
pandemic.
Mental Health. This refers to the state of stress and anxiety of individuals during
community quarantine.
Modular Learning. This refers to the current learning modality of primary education in the
Philippines where traditional teacher student practice has now been shifted to mother-child

since mothers are the immediate assistant of their child in modular learning. Therefore, they
play essential parts in their children’s education.
Quarantine. This refers to the isolation from the rest of the community. It is implemented
worldwide in order to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Stress. This drives the changes in the emotional behaviour experienced during quarantine.
Subject Group Norms. This refers to when persons does something because other people in
their social group expect them to.

Chapter3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURE

This chapter present the methodologies used in the study. This includes the research
design, research locale, and data gathering procedures, instruments, and statistical treatment.

Research Design

The researcher will use descriptive research which uses the quantitative design. The
descriptive type of research aims to gather information about condition and situation
variable. This type of research is suited in this type of investigation. Since it attempts to
describe the result of the study support the present study The Difficulties during the
Implementation of Community Quarantine and Its Relationship to the Mental Health of
HUMSS 12 Students S.Y 2021-2022.

Research Locale

This study was conducted at Landy National High School, Located at Landy Santa
Cruz Marinduque. Since the respondents will acquired from the population of Landy
National High School.

Population and Sample

This study will be conducted from the population of Landy National High School.
Specially, the samples were compared of all HUMSS 12 students of Landy National High
School in year 2021-2022, because they can provide the necessary information needed by
researcher’s to their study. There were 36 students in Grade12 Taylor, 30 students in
Grade12 weber and in Grade12 Durkheim there are 34 students with the total number of 100
respondents were taken purposive sampling since they are purposely obtained from the
population.

Research Instruments

The research used by the researchers was a questionnaire. It aims to determine the
difficulties encountered by the participants and their mental health during the
implementation of community quarantine. This survey divided into two parts. The first part
is the respondent’s assessment on the difficulties encountered during community quarantine,
which includes income, modular learning and health protocols and each aspect has five (5)

statements. Whereas, the second part which is the respondent’s mental health includes stress
and anxiety. This questionnaire is composed of ten (10) statements for each aspect

Data Gathering Procedures

To accomplish this study, the researchers took several procedures beginning with
securing permission to the HUMSS 12 Students to conduct, after determining the problem
the researchers and to be answered.

The researcher tally the survey answered by the respondents. After analysing the
given data, the researcher’s tabulated and apply suited treatment to interpret the given data
survey and come up to a conclusion.

Statistical Treatment

To answer the problems presented in the first chapter including the difficulties during
the implementation of community quarantine and its relationship to the mental health of all
HUMSS 12 students, the research statistically analysed the data using the formula.

And for the proficiency of the respondent the following formula was used
