Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:
CO1: To understand the concept of surveying to civil engineering students. Understand
measurement of areas and volumes and application of these in quantity Computations
CO2: Understand the different methods of measurement of distances, directions and
Elevation.
CO3: Acquire the knowledge of instruments of leveling like theodolites and plane table
Surveying. Understand errors of measurements and their adjustments.

Surveying, plans and maps, scales and errors due to use of wrong scale.

Linear Measurements: Different methods, Direct Measurements, Instrument for Chaining,
Ranging out survey lines, errors in chaining
Chain Surveying : Chain Triangulation, Survey Stations, Offsets, Instruments for setting
out right angles, Obstacles in Chaining, Errors in Chaining
Unit-III Lecture hr.:

Compass Surveying: Introduction, Bearings and Angles. Theory of prismatic Compass,
surveyor’s compass, Magnetic Declination, Local Attraction and errors in compassing.
Theodolite: Essentials of transit theodolite, Temporary Adjustments, Measurement of
Horizontal and Vertical angles. Miscellaneous Operations with Theodolite and sources of
Error in Theodolite Work.
Unit-IV Lecture hr.:

Levelling: Methods of Levelling, Levelling instruments, Levelling Staff, Temporary
Adjustments of a level, Differential Levelling, Booking and Reducing Levels, Balancing
Foresights and Back sights, Reciprocal Levelling, Errors in Levelling and Degree of
precision.
Plane Table Surveying: Working Operations, Methods of Plane Tabling, Errors in Plane
Tabling.
Unit-V Lecture hr.: 8
Measurement of Area, Volume and their Application: Methods of Computation of Areas,
Computation Areas from Field Notes, Computation of Areas of Regular Figures, Areas
from offsets at Regular Intervals-Mid-Ordinate Rule, Average- Ordinate Rule.
