The text is for question1.

One evening a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable. She didn’t know
how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one
problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three
pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in
one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil,
without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he
was doing.
After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed
them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then took the coffee out and placed
it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”
“Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied.
“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then
asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally,
he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.
He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same
adversity– the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong and hard,
but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its
liquid interior, but in boiling water, it became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After
they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.
“Which are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you
respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?

B. The father cooked something to react to the complaint of his daughter.
C. The father cooked a potato, an egg, and a coffee bean for his daughter.

intervention of the headmaster that Isaac was able to return to finish his studies; he passed his final
exams with very good results, and was able to go to Trinity College, Cambridge.
At Cambridge he was able to pursue his interests in mathematics, science and physics. At the
time the prevailing education was based on Aristotle, but Isaac was more interested in modern

science and decided to become a scientist In 1592, a year after his father’s death, the University of Padua
invite him to be a professor of mathematics. He stayed there for 19 years, where he became interested in
the stars. He invented an instrument which made far-away-things look larger and easier to examine. It is
called the telescope. It could make things look thirty –two times bigger. Using this instrument, Galileo could
see the star. He then began to study them began to study them and other things in the sky.
Galileo studied the moon first and discovered that the moon has a spherical shape just like our earth, with
mountains and valleys. When he studied the stars, he discovered that the “moving stars”, were not really
stars, but world like the Earth. He showed that Copernicus was right; the earth and the planets indeed
moved around the Sun Galileo also discovered that one big planet, Jupiter, had four moons, but he made
a mistake by naming them planets. Galileo developed many other things too, such as clocks and watches.
He also wrote many important books which opened the discovery of new things. Unfortunately, in 1637 he
lost his eye-sight. However, he continued to work until he passed away on January 8, 1642.

16. What made Galileo interested in learning about the stars?

A. The University of Padua made him love everything about star.

Text for questions 18 and 19
A meteor is what you see when a space rock falls to earth. It is known as a shooting star or falling
star. It is called 'shooting stars' because when the meteor hits the earth’s atmosphere, it produces heat. It
causes the meteors to glow and make a bright way as they fall. This occurs 50 to 68 miles above the
earth. This phenomenon is visible in a clear sky in the night.
Meteors can be divided into sporadic meteors and shower meteors. Sporadic meteor comes from
the dust that orbits the sun. Shower meteors come from the dust released by comets as they travel
5
through our solar system. When the earth passes through the dust, meteor showers occur above the
earth. Every year, the earth passes the same area on approximately the same time. This is why meteor
showers can be predicted every year.
The meteor which reaches the earth is very destructive. The meteor which falls in the water can
cause a huge wave and produces dangerous gases. When hitting the land, it can kill living things and ruins
all things. One of the largest meteors hitting the earth created Barringer Crater in Arizona.

18. From the text we know that ... .

A. meteor is visible in a clear sky in the day
B. when the meteor hits the earth, it produces dust
C. meteor is also known as falling star or falling star.
D. when hitting the water, the meteor can kill living things

19. Why can the meteor showers be predicted?

A. Because every year, the earth passes the same area on approximately the same time.
B. Because when the earth passes through the dust, meteor showers occur above the earth.
C. Because they come from the dust released by comets as they travel through our solar system.
D. Because the meteor which falls in the water can cause a huge wave and produces dangerous
gases.

HOW TO CLEAN TILE FLOORING

1. Sweep or vacuum the floor daily. This removes loose dirt, food crumbs and other pieces of debris
that can accumulate on tile floors. Dirt that is allowed to sit in wet areas can quickly turn into hard-to-
remove grime.
• You should also sweep or vacuum the floor before mopping or cleaning it.
• Run a dry cloth duster or dust mop over the floors after they have been swept.
2. Mop the floor with warm water. If the floor doesn't have stains or require heavy cleaning, running a
damp mop over the floor will be sufficient to keep it clean. Cleanse the mop in fresh warm water after
mopping one section of the room, and repeat until the entire floor is mopped.
• For everyday shine, simply run a clean damp dusting cloth over the floor.
3. Dry the floor. Whether you use water or water mixed with detergent, run a dry mop over the floor when
you're finished mopping. This will prevent new dirt from quickly accumulating and staining the grout.
4. Clean up spills promptly. If you drop a glass of juice or even water, clean it up right away. The longer
it sits, the more time it will have to soak into the grout. Dried orange juice and other sugary liquids also
tend to become annoyingly sticky
5. Clean the dirtier spills with disinfectant. If your pet has an accident or you drop raw meat on the
floor, spray a disinfectant directly over the spot and wipe it up right away.
• If possible, limit the disinfectant to the area where the spill occurred. Strong chemicals may
degrade or stain tile flooring.

20. Why should you clean spills up promptly?

A. To prevent it from becoming sticky.
B. To limit the disinfectant to the area.
C. To soak the spills into the grout.
D. To avoid the tile from degrading

21. What do you use the warm water for?

A. To remove loose dirt and food crumbs.
B. To clean the dirtier spills and raw meat.
C. To prevent new dirt from accumulating.
D. To cleanse the mop after mopping one section.

An iceberg is a great piece of ice floating in the sea. ‘Berg’ is the German word for ‘mountain.’ In the
coldest parts of the earth, around the North and South Poles, land and sea are both covered by layers of
ice, more than 300 meters deep at the center.
Tongues of ice, called glaciers, stretch out into the open sea. The sea water melts the bottom parts of
these glaciers, and then the top part moves into the water with a great noise. The great piece of ice sinks
for a short time under the surface, and then it rises again, and floats away as a new iceberg. Some
icebergs are many miles long, and travel for thousands of miles and several years before they finally melt.
The part of an iceberg which can be seen above the water is only about one-ninth of the total size. The
rest is hidden under the waves.
One of the world’s worst disasters at sea was in 1912 when the liner ‘Titanic’ hit an iceberg and sank on
her first journey, killing hundreds of passengers.

22. What makes a great noise when glaciers melt?

A. The glaciers stretch out into the opera sea.
B. The glaciers rise and float away to the sea.
C. The top part of glaciers moves into the water.
D. The bottom part of glaciers sinks in a short time.

23. When is a new iceberg formed?

A. After the great piece of ice melts.
B. Before the great piece of ice sinks.
C. After the great piece of ice rises again.
D. Before the great piece of ice floats away.

Firefly or Lightning Bug (Photinus pyralis)
The Pyralis firefly (also known as the lightning bug) is a common firefly in North America. This
partly nocturnal, luminescent beetle is the most common firefly in the USA.
At night, the very end (the last abdominal segment) of the firefly glows a bright yellow-green color.
The firefly can control this glowing effect. The brightness of a single firefly is 1/40 of a candle. Fireflies use
their glow to attract other fireflies. Males flash about every five seconds; females flash about every two
seconds. This firefly is harvested by the biochemical industry for the organic compunds luciferin (which is
the chemical the firefly uses for its bioluminescence).
This flying insect is about 0.75 inch (2 cm) long. It is mostly black, with two red spots on the head
cover; the wing covers and head covers are lined in yellow. Like all insects, it has a hard exoskeleton, six
jointed legs, two antennae, compound eyes, and a body divided into three parts (the head, thorax, and
7
abdomen).
Both the adults and the larvae are carnivores. They eat other insects (including other fireflies),
insect larvae, and snails.

25. How can firefly attract other fireflies?

A. Its wing covers and head covers are lined in yellow.
B. It uses its organic compunds lucifrin for its bioluminescence.
C. Its last abdominal segment glows a bright yellow-green color.
D. It uses its hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two antennae and compound eyes
