MATHEMATICS 9 (1ST PERIODICAL)

TEST I. MULTIPLE CHOICE

1. For real numbers a, b, and c, with a ≠ 0, the solution of the quadratic equation ax2 + bx +c = 0 is
−b ± √ b2−4 ac
given by the quadratic formula: x=
2a
2. Steps to solve quadratic equation using Quadratic Formula:

3. Another method that can be used to find the solution of a quadratic equation is by drawing the
corresponding quadratic graph of y=a x2 +bx +c and to find the x-coordinates of the points of
intersection of the graph with the x-axis.
4. Equations that have one or more algebraic fraction are known as fractional equations. Example
2
of fractional equations are =5 x−1 and
x+2
3 x−1
+ =2
x+2 x −5
5. The solution of a pair of simultaneous linear equations is given by the coordinates of the point of
intersection of the graph of the two equations.
6. To solve a fractional equation:
 Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCM of the denominators.
 Reduce It to a quadratic equation.
 Solve the equation either by factorization or by using the quadratic formula.
7. Always ensure that the equation is in the form a x 2 +bx+ c=0 before substituting the values of a,
b, and c into the formula.
8. For a quadratic equation a x 2 +bx+ c=0 ,
 If b 2−4 ac> 0, the equation has two real solutions,
 If b 2−4 ac=0, the equation has one real solution.
 If b 2−4 ac< 0, the equation has no real solutions.

TEST II. SOLVE A QUADRATIC EQUATION USING QUADRATIC FORMULA

TEST IV. Read the given problem. Provide appropriate explanations to your answer.
1. On a map, a piece of land is in the shape of a right-angled triangle with sides of length x cm,
(x +6) cm and ( 2 x+5 ) cm. Given that x satisfies the equation 2 x2 +8 x−11=0, solve the
equation and find the perimeter of the triangle.
Solution:
a=2 ; b=8; c=−1 1
−b ± √ b −4 ac
2

−8 ± √8 2−4 ( 2 )(−11 )
x=

−8 ± √ 64 +88
x=

−8 ± √ 152
x=

x=1.082∨−5.082
Perimeter of the triangle:
¿ x+ ( x+6 ) + ( 2 x +5 )
¿ x+ x+6 +2 x +5
¿ 4 x+11
Sincethe length of a triangle cannot be a negative value , x=1.082
¿ 4 ( 1.082 )+11
Therefore the perimeter of the triangle is 15.3 cm
