Human-Robot Interaction in Industry 4.

0
“The factory of the future will have
two employees: a human and a dog.
The task of the human will be to feed
the dog. The dog will have the task to
dissuade the human from touching
the automated systems.” as said by
Warren G. Bennis in 2016. This
quote dictates the goal of next
generation industrial advancement
and creates a perception and faith in
evolving industry 4.0.

From the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution, the utmost desire of the industries is to
develop more automation in manufacturing processes, reducing the gaps between the digital
and physical world through cyber-physical systems. This desire is materialized by the
innovation and installation of industrial robots and the development of human-robot
interaction.
Human-robot interaction is a definitive technology that deals with human and robot interaction
by detecting, interpreting, and responding to human behavior. This Interaction is the
communication and reaction of robots with humans. This interaction can be verbal and non-
verbal.
In verbal interaction, humans speak out some sort of words which are then interpreted by
robots using technologies like natural language processing.
In non-verbal interaction, the body movement and eye movement are the key interest in
conveying to the robot what humans want. This process uses technologies like computer vision
and artificial intelligence in the real-world interface.

The advancement of human-robot interaction is paving the way for smart factories and smart
products. These advantages of this technology will focus on:

1. Developing a human-robot collaborative workspace. There are some issues which involve
uncertainties and need cognitive knowledge that can only be assisted by humans. On the other
hand, the speed, stamina and physical strength of the robots can bring mass production in
action. So, the collaboration of human and robot can derive complex manufacturing with
higher efficiency.
2. Improving product personalization and customization. The integration of the imaginary
power of human and precision and accuracy power of robot’s product personalization and
customization can be done more effectively.
3. Developing the smart manufacturing process. In the smart manufacturing process, remote
access and control of the manufacturing process can be done by the interaction of the human
and robot where the robot will get a tele command from the human and accomplish the tasks
accordingly.
4. Increasing safety and dealing with uncertainties of the production. The present industrial
robots can do mass production without having knowledge of the environment. If any
disruption and failures occur in any part of the process, the whole production will stop. And
malfunctioning can be crucial in this case. Human-robot interaction will bring a vital solution
in this case.
In the end, the goal of the fourth industrial revolution can be flourished by the advancement of
human-robot interaction. It can not only bring safe and smart production into action but also
increase the utilization of industrial robots.
