The document provides a historical timeline of the development of soap from ancient times to the present. It notes that the Babylonians first invented soap by combining animal fats and ashes around 2800 BC. In 1550 BC, Egyptians mixed animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to produce soap, which they used to prepare wool for weaving. The word "soap" originated in 100 BC when the Romans sacrificed animals in Mount Sapo and mixed the oils with wood ashes. In 1791, a French chemist discovered a way to make soda ash from common salt, which was then mixed with fat to form soap.

Activity 1
Make a creative historical timeline about the development of soap and detergent. Use
pictures, drawings, and few words to represent the development of prehistoric time until
today

Babylonians who invented the soap

discovered the said material through
combining fats, specifically animal fats, with
ashes.

In 1550 BC the Egyptians used to mix

animal and vegetable oils with alkaline
salts to produce soap. Documents
mention that this kind of soap in their
times was used to prepare wool for
weaving.
The time when the Ancient Rome Legend
occurred, 100 BC is when soap got its
name. Soap was named soap because in
Mount Sapo, they used to sacrifice animals
in order to gain animal oils which they mix
with wood ashes to result in soaps.

In 1791, a French Chemist named Nicholas

Leblanc then discovered a way to soda ash
from a common salt. While still, it is mixed
with fat to form soap.

Assessment 1
1. What is the purpose of soap during the early times?
Contrary to what soaps are used for in present times, during the early times soaps are used
to clean or prepare wool to use for their weaving. Back then, soaps aren’t used for their
hygiene. In 1500 BC some also used soap for treating skin diseases.
2. What are the ingredients used in soap making by the ancient Babylons, Egyptians, and Romans?
They commonly produce soap by mixing animal fats, vegetable oils, and ashes.
3. What is soda ash?
Sodium Carbonate also known as Soda Ash is a nontoxic odorless white powder that when
it absorbs moisture, it results into a strong alkaline aqueous solution.
4. Why did German manufacturers seek to create the first synthetic detergent?
Because of the shortage of fats in order to make soaps back then in the World War I,
German Manufacturers produced synthetic detergents to meet the demand and supply
them.
