Graphing

This document discusses solving systems of linear equations by graphing the lines represented by each equation on the same coordinate plane and finding their point of intersection, with possible solutions being a single point of intersection for a consistent independent system, no intersection for an inconsistent system, or overlapping lines for a consistent dependent system with infinitely many solutions. Examples are provided to demonstrate graphing different types of systems and checking solutions algebraically.

PREVIOUSLY
• You graphed linear equations.

NOW
• You are going to solve systems of linear equations by
graphing.

NEXT
• You will solve systems of linear equations by
substitution.
VOCABULARY
• System of Linear Equations
• Solution of a System of Linear Equations
• Consistent Independent System
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
• Graph an equation of a line.
WARM-UP

1. Given a linear equation, identify at least two ways to graph.

2. Determine if the line 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 1 passes through the point (−1, 2).

3. Is (1, −1) a solution of the equation: 2𝑦 + 4 = 3𝑥 ?

LEARN: Graphing a System of Linear Equations (Pg. 1)
LEARN: Graphing a System of Linear Equations (Pg. 2)

Types of Linear Systems:

• When the graphs of the equations intersect at exactly one point,
the linear system has one solution. The system is called a
consistent independent system.
• When the graphs of the equations are parallel, the linear system
has no solution. The system is called an inconsistent system.
• When the graphs of the equations are the same line, the linear
system has infinitely many solutions. The system is called a
consistent dependent system.

• Consistent ⟹ Intersect • Inconsistent ⟹ Do Not Intersect

• Dependent ⟹ Same Line • Independent ⟹ Different Lines

EXAMPLE 1:
Use the graph to solve the system. Then check your solution algebraically.
𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 = 𝟒
𝟑𝒙 − 𝒚 = 𝟓
𝟑𝒙 − 𝒚 = 𝟓
SOLUTION
1. Rewrite each equation in slope-
intercept form, and graph:
𝟏
𝒚 =− 𝒙 + 𝟐
𝟐
(𝟐, 𝟏)
𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟓

2. Identify the point of intersection:

The lines appear to intersect at
the point (𝟐, 𝟏).

3. Check if the point is a solution to 𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 = 𝟒

both equations:
𝒙 + 𝟐𝒚 = 𝟒 𝟑𝒙 − 𝒚 = 𝟓
? ?
𝟐 + 𝟐(𝟏) = 𝟒 𝟑 𝟐 −𝟏 = 𝟓
𝟒 = 𝟒✓ 𝟓 = 𝟓✓

Because the ordered pair (𝟐, 𝟏) is a solution of each equation, it is a solution of the system.
EXAMPLE 2:

SOLUTION

𝒚 = 𝒙 −𝟕
𝟏
𝒚 =− 𝒙 − 𝟐
𝟒
Check

(𝟏, 𝟓) (𝟏, 𝟐) (𝟐, −𝟑)

EXAMPLE 3:

SOLUTION

𝟑
𝒚 =− 𝒙+𝟓
𝟐

𝟑
𝒚 =− 𝒙+𝟏
𝟐
EXAMPLE 4:

SOLUTION
EXAMPLE 6:

SOLUTION
Check
Solve each system by graphing.

No solution Infinitely many solutions
