PITCHING MATCH-UP: Modesto sends RHP Simon Ferrer to the mound against the Storms LHP Cory Luebke Ferrer is coming off his best outing to date against the Lancaster JetHawks Ferrer did take the loss, but allowed just two runs and walked a season low three batters He also struck out a season high three Lancaster batters and allowed only three hits He is 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA this season (13.0IP, 13H, 9R, 8ER, 14BB, 5SO, 2WP, .271AVG) The knuckleballer makes his return to Modesto and to the Nuts Nuts fans remember Ferrer as a utility man who played 23 games in the outfield, 12 at first base, 7 at third, 5 at shortstop and 2 at second He was placed on the DL in the 2005 season on May 19 due to a strained muscle in his spine was reinstated on May 27 and hit .216 in 45 games He made the move to the mound in 2006 with both Tri-City and Asheville, combining to go 0-0, 1.59 (34.0 IP, 6 ER) with one save in 18 games Luebke is a left handed thrower from Ohio State, he is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA this season (12.0IP, 18H, 14R, 10ER, 3HR, 6BB, 10SO, .340AVG) He has pitched in two games away from The Diamond and makes his second home start today against the Nuts He did not earn a decision in his last outing (5.0IP, 2H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 4SO) on 4/15 against High Desert He allowed a season high 11 hits on 4/10 against Lancaster Luebke is a first round (supplemental) pick from the 2007 draft. SATURDAY NIGHT: Aneury Rodriguez dominated the Lake Elsinore Storm on Saturday night at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore. Rodriguez (2-1) earned the win and did not allow a hit until Robert Perry hit a double to right field with two outs in the fifth inning. Modesto (9-8) beat Lake Elsinore (8-9) 5-2 in front of a sell out crowd of 7,086. Victor Ferrante led the Nuts with two singles and two RBI in the win. Rodriguez struck out seven in his start, walked two and allowed just two hits in the win. He left after the seventh inning and made way for the bullpen to finish out the game.

Nuts Opening Day Lineup Notes Eighteen of the 25 players spent at least part of last season at low-A Asheville. Seven players (RHP James Burok, RHP David Patton, RHP Andrew Johnston, C Nelson Robledo, INF Nick Haley, OF Travis Becktel and OF Cole Garner) spent a part of last year at Modesto. OF Travis Becktel attended San Jose State University. ABOUT THE SKIPPER: Manager Jerry Weinstein begins his second season as the manager of the Modesto Nuts Weinstein led his club to a playoff berth last season as the team compiled an overall record of 76-64 prior to joining the Rockies, Weinstein who has over 39 years of coaching experience as the pitching coach for the Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) baseball team from 2001-05 prior to his coaching stint with the Mustangs, Weinstein was the Los Angeles Dodgers Director of Player Development in 2000 and 2001 and also served as the Dodgers catching coordinator in 1999 he was a head coach at Sacramento City College for 23 seasons, posting a record of 831-20812 while guiding the Panthers to 16 conference championships, two co-conference titles, a state title in 1988 and a national crown in 1998 In addition to his success in Sacramento, Weinstein has also served as a coach for the United States Olympic teams in 1992 and 1996 he was also an assistant coach for the 1987 U.S. Pan American Games team and led the 2005 U.S. club to a gold medal at the Maccabiah Games he and his wife, Andrea, reside in San Luis Obispo. COACHING STAFF: Pitching coach Butch Hughes returns for his fifth season with the Rockies organization and fourth at the High-A level last season he helped guide 16 game winner and California League Pitcher of the year, Brandon Hynick, along with helping right-handed pitcher Alan Johnson, who posted a career-best 14 victories for Modesto in 2007 the 67-year-old, has been involved in professional baseball for 24 years and has also spent time coaching at the amateur level and overseas Resides in Merced, CA. Hitting coach Duane Espy enters his first season as a coach for the Modesto Nuts after spending all of last season as the hitting coach for Rookie-level Casper Prior to his stint last season, Espy spent all four seasons as the big league hitting coach on manager Clint Hurdles staff Duane spent 30 years in the minor leagues as a player, coach, manager and hitting coach instructor before being named the Padres hitting coach two months into the 2000 season served two and a half years as San Diegos major league hitting coach before joining Colorado.
