he International Offshore Team Association (IOTA) has joined the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) in launching Class 1 for Dhreima an initiative to support the Qatar Orphan Foundation.

Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the QMSF and IOTA, was instrumental in encouraging Class 1 a sport in which he has been a leading figure since 2003 to become an active vehicle to raise awareness of the foundation. In presenting this initiative I wanted to emphasise how sport, in whatever form or however extreme, can support the values and the importance of the activities of an organisation such as the Qatar Orphan Foundation. The association between Class 1 and Dhreima will be developed over a series of activities that will take place at races during the course of the 2008 season, with the purpose of highlighting the activities of Dhreima and finding synergy with similar organisations based in countries that host Class 1 GP events. The Qatar Orphan Foundation - Dhreima was launched on 10 June 2003 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, Chairman of the Supreme Council. We in the Qatari Orphan Foundation believe that our community values of solidarity, compassion and cooperation make us truly capable of providing all the support the children need, said Nabil Ali Bin Ali, Chairman of the Dhreima Board, adding. And we are extremely happy that the Class 1 Championship has elected to support the Foundation.

Barring all disasters, Dubais Victory Team looks set to lift its sixth European title at this weekends Romanian Grand Prix, round five of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship and the fourth and final round of the Class 1 European Championship. Mohammed Al Marri and Nadir Bin Hendi, who lead the World Championship by 18 points and carry a ten point advantage in the European standings, will line up in Victory 1 on Lake Siutghiol, Mamaia on Sunday for the 21 lap, 94.77Nm Romanian Grand Prix as the clear favourites to lift the first silverware of the year having dominated the first half of the season, with Bin Hendi taking three wins from four starts, one with Arif Al Zafeen, out injured after round one, and two with Al Marri.

The immediate challenge to Victory 1 are their team-mates, Abdullah Al Mehairbi and defending World and European Champion, Jean-Marc Sanchez, who have taken three podiums this season, out-gunning their team-mates last time out. But Victory 7s throttleman, Sanchez, the winner in Romania last year, knows that they simply have to finish ahead of Victory 1 with several boats between them and an 11 point advantage if he is to retain his title a tall order. However, should either of the Victory outfits falter or hit trouble, several boats lie in wait with an outside tilt at the European crown. Jotuns Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg, who ended Victorys winning streak with a sensational win in the BMW Norwegian Grand Prix, are the most improving team this season and now the leading European challenger to the might of the Middle East teams.

For Qatar 96, also with three podiums to their credit, a second European title looks a distant prospect, but both Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani and Steve Curtis know that to keep their World title aspirations alive, finishing ahead of both Victory outfits is the priority. Team-mates Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini, currently lying in fourth slot in the overall title race in Qatar 95, will switch engines for Romania and the remainder of the season, opting to run the Sterling V8 power-plants. Foresti & Suardis Italian-Norwegian partnership of Giampaolo Montavoci and Kolbjorn Selmer head the battle for middle-order supremacy comfortably, under- pinning their sixth place with consistency and reliability, finishing in the top six in all races so far this season. For Roscioli Hotels Romas, Domenico Cirilli, 2008 is seen as a year for developing new talent, and he and his new charge, Sergio Carrasco, have produced solid performances in their first season together, with the all-Spanish pairing taking points finishes from two of their three starts missing out in Moscow when their steering broke and looking for more points in Romania. SeveneleveNs crew of Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi are also looking at this season as a development year, with a new boat and driver-throttleman combination and more recently a new engine package. And with new engines for the second half of the season, Giorgi is confident that they can repeat the kind of performance that earned them a top six finish in the season opener. After unveiling Class 1s newest thoroughbred in Moscow, designed by Matteo Nicolini and built by Nicolini Offshore, Mohammed Al-Nassr and Luca Nicolini will give the boat only its third outing in Romania, looking for reliability to realise the promise and potential seen during multiple practice sessions and Pole Position outings.

Situated at the crossroads of several key commercial routes, Constanta lies on the western coast of the Black Sea, 185 miles from the Bosphorus Strait. An ancient metropolis and Romanias largest sea port, Constanta traces its history over some 2,500 years. Originally called Tomis, legend has it that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. The third largest city in Romania, Constanta is now an important cultural and economic centre, and worth exploring for its archaeological treasures and the atmosphere of the old town centre. Its historical monuments, ancient ruins, grand Casino, museums and shops, and proximity to beach resorts make it the focal point of Black Sea coast tourism, with open-air restaurants, nightclubs and cabarets offering a wide variety of entertainment. And a favourite weekend getaway for locals and tourists is Mamaia, Romanias largest seaside resort and one of the most sought-after on the Black Sea coast. Situated on a narrow stretch of fine-sand beach between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol - Lake of Milk - Mamaia boasts numerous hotels, a casino and a diversity of sporting facilities and top nightclubs and restaurants, all located within 100 feet of the sea. Visitors can spend the mornings cooling down at the beach and the afternoons taking in the view of the Black Sea by riding the Telegondola or strolling through Satul de Vacanta Park, a local meeting place with a charm of its own.
